Super Rugby Australian player ratings: Round 14

By PeterK / Roar Guru

Here are my player ratings from Round 14 of Super Rugby. Submit your own, keeping the figures for mediocre scores aside for reasons of brevity AND so that the focus is on the best and worst performers.

Scores should be between anyone over 7 and anyone below 4, i.e. for very good and poor performances. Half scores are allowed i.e. 7.5, 3.5 and so on.

Please submit your own scores for a whole team. The minimum is one team, there is no obligation to score all the games. I average the scores per team by the number submitted. I will compile every ones submitted teams scores and produce Wallaby form teams later in the week. There will be 1 team of the round and 3 accumulative teams.

Reds – Rebels
The Reds were a different team with Connolly’s input. Their selections improved and the attack clicked. However their defence still needs a lot of work, as they let in four tries.

The Rebels, fighting for an unlikely finals spot, dropped the ball against a team they were expected to beat. The Rebels forwards were beaten by the hungry, more energetic, smaller and more mobile Reds forwards.

Reds
J. Slipper 8/10
G. Holmes 8/10
J. Hanson 8/10
R. Simmons 7.5/10
L. Gill 7.5/10
W. Genia 8/10
L. Turner 7.5/10
C. Feauai-Sautia 8/10
J. O’Connor 8.5/10

Rebels
T. Sexton 2/10
P. Alo-Emile 3.5/10
L. Jones 7.5/10
S. McMahon 3.5/10
S. Higginbotham 7.5/10
J. Debrezceni 3.5/10
N. Stirzaker 7.5/10
D. Shipperley 7.5/10

Waratahs – Sharks

The Waratahs are still making too many errors. They dominated the Sharks in the forwards except for the scrum, and were more penetrating in the backs. Skelton destroyed maul after maul virtually on his own. The Waratahs lack of speed out wide was found out again and again though. The game was closer than the final score indicated.

B. Robinson 3/10
S. Kepu 7.5/10
W. Skelton 8/10
M. Hooper 7.5/10
B. Foley 8/10
K. Beale 7.5/10
R. Horne 7.5/10
A. Ashley-Cooper 8/10
I. Folau 7.5/10

Lions – Brumbies

This was a fast paced, entertaining game throughout. The referee, Jaco Peyper, showed excellent game management. The Brumbies backs played very well and I wish that they played this type of rugby against the top teams instead of the kicking game. The Brumbies scrum was overpowered and the only area of Lions dominance. Pocock and White were outstanding.

A. Alaalatoa 3/10
B. Alexander 3/10
S. Moore 3.5/10
S. Carter 3.5/10
R. Arnold 7.5/10
S. Fardy 7.5/10
D. Pocock 8.5/10
I. Vaer 7.5/10
N. White 8.5/10
C. Lealiifano 7.5/10
J. Tomane 8/10
T. Kuridrani 7.5/10
J. Mogg 7.5/10

Agree TWAS. Although I would swap your grading of Gill and Holmes. In other words Gill 9/10 and Holmes 8/10.

I actually have a rugby channel on DirecTV. I feel like it was supposed to be a trial, but they forgot to turn it off. I have been recording every game and watching them throughout the week.

Naivalu at least 8 from me. Showed pace, footwork and commitment in finishing. I rate him higher than the Waratah's Fijian winger

I thought Beale was attacking hard without much effect. If he did break the line, it was only a 1/4 break, and was tackled 1-3m past the line.

Haven't seen the Brumbies game yet, but watched the other two Aussie teams. Rebels: Front Row: 3/10 Luke Jones: 7.5/10 Higgenbotham: 7.5/10 (did a lot of dirty work this week without a lot of flash) Stirzaker: 7.5/10 Naiavalu (sp?): 8.5/10 Reds: Slipper: 7.5/10 Hansen: 8/10 Holmes: 9/10 Simmons: 7.5/10 Gill: 9/10 Genia: 8/10 McIntyre: 7.5/10 (wasn't as involved as I'd have liked, but clearly was an upgrade from Frisby at 10, and a try on debut). JOC: 8/10 (Finally played like he wanted that gold jersey) CFS: 8/10 (injected himself into the game and was a force.) Turner: 7.5/10 Waratahs Robinson: 2.5/10 Kepu: 8/10 (scrummed well, ran with authority) Skelton: 8/10 (each week it is looking like he is improving. He runs hard, scrums well, and his link play is crazy for a lock of his size). Hoiles: 8.5/10 (my man of the match. he was everywhere) Hooper was quiet, much like the rest of this season. But I think he raised my expectations so high last season that I am rating him as ordinary this season in comparison. Foley: 8.5/10 AAC: 7.5/10 Horne: 7.5/10 Nayarovoro (sp?): 7.5/10 Folau: 7.5/10

Oh yes, I forgot. If he can keep this sort of form up, it will be happy days for the WBs when he is available. Genuine pace, size and skill.

Ethan thanks, Naivalu is not eligible, mind you he would be the top winger if he was.

Good to see lots of comments this week! Reds 7.5 - Slipper, Hansen, Simmons 8 - F-Sautia, Genia, JOC 8.5 - Holmes, Gill Rebels 2 - Sexton 7.5 - Smith, Inman, Jones 8 - Naivalu Waratahs 3.5 - Robinson 7.5 - Horne, Dennis, Palu, Foley, Folau, Hooper, Kepu 8 - AAC 8.5 - Skelton Beale was very close to a 3.5 for mine, but did a few redeeming things such as the try saving tackle. I really hope he doesn't make team of the week though. Didn't catch the Brumbies.

well he was coming back from injury. He was replaced after missing vital tackles that led to tries. This is why I scored him low. Also low work rate.

Moore and Carter had very low work rates, and Carter also missed tackles.

Bit harsh on the low marks for 4 of the Brumbies tight 5 IMO? Though they got beaten at scrum time, they more than held their own elsewhere, never easy to do at altitude in SA.

Think McMahon was injured? One of the many disappointing Rebels.

CFS has looked overweight, and disinterested this season. No doubt reds development could improve, but CFS has to shoulder a bit of blame himself. He doesn't appear to be working too hard on the field, and his body looks like he isn't off it either.

Now there is a career that has stagnated for the last few years. Shame really. Asks questions of what the Reds are doing to develop their young players ...........
