[VIDEO] South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Parramatta Eels highlights: NRL scores, blog

By Joshua Thomas / Roar Guru

The South Sydney Rabbitohs are looking to turn a disappointing title defence around when they welcome the bottom-of-the-table Parramatta Eels to ANZ. Join The Roar from 7:45pm (AEST) for all the action.

The Rabbitohs have lost four of their last five games, admittedly by tight margins. Last round’s four-point defeat to the top-of-the-table Melbourne Storm emphasising this pattern.

The Eels have an identical win ratio over past weeks, and also haven’t done as poorly as their record would suggest. Last week they took the New Zealand Warriors to extra time after reversing a 12-point halftime deficit, only to lose 17-13.

Both sides head to ANZ one representative player light, with William Hopoate and Greg Inglis selected for NSW and Queensland respectively.

John Folau also makes his way back into the Eels side to replace Hopoate after a promising start to his season. The away side also welcome back Junior Paulo from a nine-week suspension.

The home side welcome back a trio of players to make up for Inglis’ absence with Joel Reddy, Jason Clark and Daryl Millard all included in the South Sydney squad.

Notable continued absences for both sides include Glenn Stewart, Adam Reynolds and John Sutton for the Rabbitohs, with the Eels missing former Rabbitoh Beau Champion, Ken Edwards and Vai Toutai.

Parramatta grabbed a memorable victory last time these two met in Round 4, but the Rabbitohs had prior to that won seven in a row against the Eels. With the Eels under a salary cap cloud that may well cost them $500,000, expect the unexpected from a football side renowned for its emotion.

It’s a crucial game for both sides, with an always electric Parramatta attack set to face the brick wall that is the South Sydney forward pack. The Rabbitohs need a win to stay in touch with the top of the table, while the Eels need to start winning if they are any hope of finals football this season.

Follow all of the action live here on The Roar from 7:45pm (AEST).

Last year Souths had Sam Burgess making consistent 150+ metres gains despite the attention he got from the opposition, and pulling his brothers along in his wake for 130+ gains apiece. Sam could make good gains from a short runup because he is a bit of a freak but most of George's spectacular runs were from deeper. Now the twins are running from flat and in close and are pushing to crack 100 metres even though they are playing longer minutes. Sam and Teo also made life much more discouraging for the opposing attacking forwards because they whacked harder than any of the current pack. Souths 2015 strategy to utilise two playmaking forwards to play wider for gains has been wrecked by injuries to Stewart, Sutton and Reynolds...not much that they can do about that in a hurry... but they have a player called Corey Walker who took about 15 minutes of his first game with North Sydney a month ago to size up his team mates and take over the running their backline. Walker puts his outside men into gaps , scores tries, and has a good kicking game. And he has class. The 200 or so loyal North Sydney fans think that he walks on water. Norths also have a couple of big fast young boys on the flanks who are revelling in Walker's ball service and who could not be doing any worse than the badly out of form and seemingly dispirited Joel Reddy. The NSW Cup is not the NRL but in a game last week in which Walker starred against a top side Darryl Millard, who has had chances in the NRL, made very little impact. Souths came very close to losing 5 out of their last 6 games...what have they got to lose from giving this individual a go?

Well that is a big problem for us now, but not all the problems that Souths have. Last night, and for the life of me I couldn't understand why, they were so shallow in attack, you could have thrown a blanket over them and you would have covered the whole Souths 3/4 and forward pack for the duration of the game. Souths didn't (and it was perfect conditions for that) either have the Burgess's or Grant continually running onto the ball, with a run up of at least 10 to 15 meters, on the burst hard, when they were so close to the try line? That would have been a much more affective attacking ploy then to have the usual and continual forwards running onto the ball and making 5 meters at the most, like they do week in and week out. there is something very serious with South Sydney's attacking strategies especially when their backs are not performing and most of their attacking moves get broken down or are being defended against.

He was one of the bright attacking forces though. Dugan has made a few similar mistakes in his last 2 games, but his attacking prowess leaves him well ahead on the ledger. I think you can forgive Sandow similarly. The poor bugger had Reece as one winger and the big clumsy Fijian on the other, so he really had his work cut out to cover for them.

Alex Johnston could have put the Rabbitohs ahead a few minutes earlier, had he only passed to the left where there was a 3 man overlap. The last man in Parra's defensive line was Reece Lightning, who I'm surprised is still playing given he won't/can't tackle, and his kick returns are absolutely insipid (did you see him pass the ball 25m back to the much smaller Chris Sandow to run the ball back?). If he had 10% of Sandow's heart he'd be the equal of Johnston, at least. He is absolutely petrified of contact, as I'm sure I would be too, but you don't see it in too many RL players.

souths just need to hang in there until they get back to full strength and then they will be a chance. Hopefully it won't be too late for them when that happens....

And if it wasn't for Sandow in the last game for Parra against Souths then Parra wouldn't have won. And as you said 'that’s sport'. But I wouldn't be too worried if I was a Parra fan as Parra look like a good team and they will come good. Better than Souths who looked awful and a team that is lost within itself.

There are only a few words to describe South Sydney last night, they looked slow, were slow, looked awful and just didn’t look like they could play their way out of a wet brown paper bag. Very frustrating times for all Souths fans and many questions have to be asked, where and what is next? When key players are missing or injured. Souths were very lucky to win this game and luckily for us Parra were worst then us. Sandow’s ‘knock on’ at the end there, lost the game for Parra which was the opposite from what he did in the last encounter against Souths.

We have to bring back Jarrod from the states he was the only one that held the team till the 80th minute. This crap has to stop with the salery cap and just play to win the game.

It was looking unlikely there for a while, but just like they always seem to do Parra pulled out a late loss. Took a real team effort to lose that one.

Not knocking Sandow but if it weren't for those two knock ons they would have won the game, but alas, that's sport.

Wet conditions is not the time to put a half back into fullback. Kicking 0 from 7 is criminal (0 out of 4 tonight, 0 out of 3 last week). Parra just played dumb footy, game there to win and couldn't do it.

MATCH REVIEW South Sydney Rabbitohs 14- Parramatta Eels 12 The Eels are again left reeling after another narrow and last minute loss this evening, with the Rabbitohs managing to scrape out a crucial win. Despite being on the back foot most of the second half, South Sydney found a way to win this evening with a 75th minute try to Cameron McInnes and sole conversion of the night from Issac Luke proving enough to defeat a spirited Parramatta outfit. In slippery conditions that demanded safe football, it was a grindy victory for the Rabbits who cement their place in top eight with the Eels now rooted to the bottom of the table.
