[Highlights] Cowboys' winning streak hits eight

By News / Wire

North Queensland have made it a club record eight straight wins with an 8-0 victory over the Wests Tigers in Campbelltown.

For 77 minutes, a first half penalty goal to Ethan Lowe looked to be the difference in a match that was the lowest scoring game since the infamous scoreless draw between Newtown and Canterbury in 1982.

But Cowboys winger Antonio Winterstein sealed the win in the shadows of fulltime, breaking through on a James Tedesco spilt ball close to his own tryline and breaking the hearts of the modest 8,267 crowd.

Both sides struggled mightily without their Origin stars, particularly in a first half where neither team could mount any sort of pressure on the opposition, let alone post points on the scoreboard.

Cowboys fullback Lachlan Coote was a standout, coming up with the goods after being peppered by the Tigers kickers all night as well as directing his own team around the park with his left boot.

Lowe gave the Cowboys a slender 2-0 lead in the 28th minute after the Tigers were penalised for stripping in the tackle.

The hosts looked to have finally broken the drought in the 55th minute when five-eighth Mitchell Moses chased down his own chip and toed ahead for Kevin Naiqama, only for the Tigers winger to fumble the ball over the line.

In his first game back since injuring his ankle playing for Samoa three weeks ago, Tigers centre Tim Simona re-aggravated the injury late in the first half and failed to return after halftime.

And that despite every Broncos fan rating him, Hook could not see his talent enough to keep him (even if as a back-up to McCullough).

Considering we got the 2 points, as frustrating as that was too watch, I am going to try and not dwell on it too much. Particularly as the Tigers (at least in Sydney) have a mental advantage over us since the 2005 grand final, and always beat us in Sydney. And now, we finally do break the hoodoo (albeit, with both teams depleted - a lot more so for my Cowboys). On the flip side, we won't get this lucky against the Dragons when we play them without our representative players. Though, if Mal recalls DCE, then Morgan will play in that game. And for the Tigers game, Lui was injured (and thus unavailable for selection) and should be available for that game too. We will certainly need both of them (as genuine halves) as well as the same stubborn defence to be a chance against the Dragons (without Merrin and Dugan).

I agree, this orgin round and three week gap is not working, go back to two weeks inbetween games and keep two Friday and Sunday games going, but also as I said allow the new blood for the intrust super cup and the Holden cup step up while origin is on.

The game changes everytime Granville comes on! Instant impact. The meters he made out of dummy-half last week playing the broncos made me cringe. (not based on his performance, just the fact it got my team on the back foot haha)

I agree, Coote has become the missing link. I must admit to being a bit intrigued by the way Greenie is using a rotation of Granville & Kostjasyn at hooker, obviously he must feel that at this stage Granville isn't ready yet to be an 80 minute player at NRL level, so rather than shatter his confidence he is using him in reduced bursts. I guess.

I wouldn't write the Bunnies off either, bit of bad luck with injuries and so forth, but geez it was only a few weeks ago they were world beaters. That sort of talent doesn't just disappear, it might go missing for a while, but every side will go through that.

Tactics went a long way to winning and losing this game..Greenny had his forwards running at Taupau, their main man, all night..usually hes good for 25 or so a game yesterday he was forced to make 40..he ended up running the ball back as gently as a kitten.. If Cam Smith was out for the Storm could you ever imagine Belly using Cronk as the teams dummy half ? Brooks just wasnt in the game and Moses is a turnstile.

Shame the Rabbitohs had bad luck with injuries otherwise they would have a spot in those Prelims you mentioned, they would probably have taken the Broncos place after the way they wiped the floor with them this year.

Coote looks to be the final piece to that elusive premiership. He looks hungry after missing last season.

Way too early for finals predictions yet. For a start the Cowbies have to go through their regulation mid season form slump - its almost obligatory these days. I haven't written the Dogs off yet, still plenty of time for them to get their stuff together. There's no good reason for the Chooks poor form either. Still wide open I reckon.

Winners are grinners,2 really valuable points for the cows..but the Tigers were just awful threw absolutely nothing at NQ. Dummy half was poor,Halatau was struggling to keep up the entire time he was on and it cost them dearly..why Taylor buried one of his main attacking weapons there (Brooks) as Halatau sub,is mysterious at best.. Almost losing the ball against the feed (again),penalty kicks barely going out,leg pull/tackle in air penalties,re-start out on full,no dummy half ball loss in prime attacking position,no rushing to form scrums....not many dumb sides make the 8

Yeah. I thought the Cows were deserved winners. Coote was massive in the halves absence. I thought Hannant was good as well. Brooks and Moses should have played a little bit of football. Cowboys are looking the real deal this year. Cowboys VS Wariors & Broncos VS Storm Prelims this year.

I like Origin on Wednesdays too. But I think it's possible to also have them on consecutive weeks. They only need to schedule another two games on Friday night and Sunday afternoon to keep ch9 sweet. Ditch the rep' round and make the Pac Islands into a round robin for a start. That should keep the International gallery quiet and allow the lovers of Origin some peace. Don't thank me now; -)

Spot on mate the tigers haven't had anything going for them since 08/09. Them and the sharks are better off being rebadged in Perth and NZ. This club CEO meeting seems an extremely inward outlook from the clubs and I feel let down. Of the 8000 the tigers got last night most would support a Qcup team that is a feeder and namesake to a Perth or NZ club. Those who are lost to the code would only be temporarily lost. People are sheep, and if the NRL is growing it's presence across the pacific islands, Australia and NZ the games increase will happen far quicker. The NRL shouldn't look to the gc suns and gws in the afl for an insight into expansion. The Brisbane bears evaluation in the Brisbane lions is a better indicator. The support that fitzroy played in the lions early success was vital. This close connection to the feeder comps has no price. The sharks and tigers hardcore fans will be pist beyond belief at first but will likely develop a connection to the new sides because a chunk of the players will be cronulla and wests locals. Theres ppl who are league fans with mild interest in any real club support won't be affected and these people make up a far larger part of the fan base than people may think. Some will be lost to the game but within 10 years if they were turning up to watch games and a regular TV game watcher they'll continue to support the code. There's almost nothing to be lost other than sentiment if these teams are rebadged and located. Maybe in 20-30 years time Perth and NZ have their own talent pool and the feeder clubs can supply players to a Gosford that takes home games to shark park, leitchardt or Campbeltown. If a star player can cop a positional shift because it will benefit the teams performance surely we can see club relocation the same way.

Great to see that the Cowboys are on a excellent winning streak but how long it is going to be before the NRL steps in a screw them again? Also you can't go blaming Origin for teams bad performance or wanting it on a weekend. Origin try having games on a friday night once about ten or so years ago and it failed miserably, Origin is and will be always a Wednesday night game. With this, players should be able to back up for their team on that weekend or not be able to play and focus on Origin and give a new breed of player a chance to play in the NRL.

It's funny how the Tigers still had their fullback, halfback and five eight and people are blaming Origin for a 'dour' game. I too agree that Origin should be on stand alone weekends but on this occasion Origin was not to blame for the Tigers poor game. Well done to the Cowboys.
