Please, tell me how Adam Goodes offended you?

By Sarah Olle / Expert

If you can’t handle an Indigenous man doing an Indigenous dance on Indigenous Round, please take a step back and ask yourself why.

The media was sent into a frenzy last night when Adam Goodes celebrated his second quarter goal by performing an Indigenous war dance.

It resembled something in the All Blacks repertoire. It was fierce and a manifestation of the pride Goodes has in his Indigenous heritage.

WATCH THE VIDEO OF GOODES’ CELEBRATION ABOVE, OR AT ROAR TV

Yet, instead of embracing the show of pride, the media and public were quick to condemn Goodes as an attention seeker.

Barry Hall, Dennis Commeti and Eddie McGuire – to name a few – were all quick to question Goodes’ actions.

Hall said he understood Goodes was proud of his heritage, but thought the dance was provocative and unwarranted.

Cometti – a respected, level headed and well-received commentator – expressed his doubts from the pulpits of the commentary box, a message which would have echoed through each and every lounge room.

And McGuire labelled the Indigenous dance as “strange”.

In other words: we are happy to acknowledge Indigenous Australia by celebrating Indigenous round, but, please, keep the rest of your Indigenous heritage to yourself.

These comments were not racist, but they did little to deter the vitriolic hate disseminated across the Internet last night.

Commentators – rightly or wrongly – are in unique positions of power and these men should have been wiser because, if Goodes cannot perform that kind of an act on a football field for fear of racist slander from the crowd, then we have much bigger issues at hand than a dance.

Footballers often do things in the heat of the moment that we celebrate, but, when it comes to race, we sit meekly behind our keyboards and join the hate parade.

The AFL now finds itself in the situation where they can back Goodes and champion tolerance, respect and reconciliation over hate, division and xenophobia.

Indeed, in conjunction with Indigenous Round, the AFL are promoting the “Recognise” campaign, the movement to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander peoples in the Australian Constitution and remove racial discrimination from it.

If the AFL are truly genuine in their endorsement of this campaign they will back the Swans legend.

Goodes is a leader in our community and, like all great leaders, in the face of criticism he stood up and made a stand.

If more people stood behind him – Indigenous and non-Indigenous alike – this conversation may have been one of celebration, not condemnation.

Cheer, cheer, Adam Goodes.

THESE are the few moments of spontaneous dance movements that have been causing such outrage??? White Aussies need to 'fess up - they're terrified of Aboriginal Aussies. Always have been. After all, they look and sometimes act differently; even have the audacity to speak in different languages. Now we discover they move differently too. Aaarrgghhh!!! The sky will fall in, for sure...

If any players give it to supporters its pretty bad taste. On the megabucks they are on with the training they receive they should have thick enough skins to ignore supporters in the crowd. Nevermind single out 13 year old girls. If a guy with big eyes is told he looks like a frog by a 13 year old girl. Has she said the wrong thing? Or are we too sensitive? Or are some people too sensitive? Goodes already is not liked by opposition supporters so acting the way he does surely makes opposition fans dislike him more. A bit like the Stuart Broad of AFL (oh hang on but Stuart Broad isnt Aboriginal). Maybe it isnt about being Aboriginal that people dislike him. Maybe its because of the way he acts

Goodes is in a position of Power and should use his power responsibly. Running at a bunch of Carlton supporters doing a War Dance is hardly responsible. About as mature as your comment that Goodes should consult me. Nice one mate. Just dont cry when supporters boo Goodes when he consistently acts with a Us against them attitude. He makes it hard for people to like the guy.

Pure and deliberate provocative action by Adam Goodes ... I don't think anyone would have known what he was doing at the time except having a go at the Carlton supporters .. yet everyone that says it was inappropriate at being directed aggresively at the carlton supporters, so as to incite them, is labelled a racist ... well if speaking the truth is being a racist .. then call me a racist

Jrod bugger off! Do you have any problem with the Kiwis doing the Haka before any Rugby game? It's excactly the same thing yet nobody complains about that. He is celebrating his culture on INDIGENOUS ROUND. Settle down mate!

yep people are glossing over the public outcry when cathy donned the aboriginal flag. if memory serves me correct there were similar insults thrown by fred niles and other right wingers at the time having a go at her for daring to celebrate her heritage. Australia as a country needs to grow up when it comes to race relations.

Sue, please explain to me how it was offensive. Aggressive? Yes. Last time I checked, footy can get pretty brutal too.

Really? We're going to play that card? Since when was a war cry a part of white Australian culture?

Good to see so many the ubiquitous psychoanalysts on The Roar, offering their his opinions on what is inside the mind of the 1930s. ;) You've been busy for days EddyJ, directing how people must think only correct and approved thoughts - a determined, subjective and obstinate innings for your cause. You will be interested to know that "bigot" means "a person who is utterly intolerant of any differing creed, belief, or opinion."

I don't know much about adam goodes nor this situation. I'm not even a major fan of AFL football but I'd like to clear up a point about the All Black Haka. The Haka is a very personal thing for the players and spectators, its about pride, history and honour. The opposition is simply there standing watching as the challenge is presented but the All Blacks have been known to do the haka in the sheds before games as well. The Haka has been done after some games as well, the sevens team do a haka when they win a competition round. I don't know anything about the Adam Goodes but if he completed a dance after scoring a goal (I'm wondering where he gets the time to do this as most of these dances are 2-3 minutes long and no ref is going to stop the game) then perhaps he was doing it for himself, for his pride and the pride of his culture. If so wheres the problem?

Goodness! As well as being a psychoanalyst, you're now an expert on traditional Aboriginal 'challenges'! Let's end this here. It's such a banal debate – if the commentators had not made it such a talking point when Goodes did his ware dance, then none of this debate would be happening. Different circumstances I know, but imagine if some tool of a commentator railed against the NRL Indigenous All Stars dance in 2013 during the Channel 9 broadcast, we would have had the same silly debate. Perhaps the NRL is more sophisticated than the AFL when it comes to race relations. Judging by their comments, people can't see through their own misconceptions and misbeliefs – they just want to think what they want to think, without broadening their thinking. You say that Goodes’ actions "taunt a bunch of people who cannot respond is a disgrace". And that's exactly what racism is.

Throughout his career from 1999–2015, Goodes made one complaint in 2013 at the MCG. That's it – get your facts right. He said he acted on that night, because he was sick of getting all the abuse over the years, and especially on Indigenous Round, decided to make a statement. It wasn't really his fault that the mouthful of abuse was a 13-year-old girl (as if Goodes was meant to be able to identity her age in a split second when he's trying to concentrate on the game). So, because most people in Australia don't understand the effects of racial abuse, think that it's not a big deal and decide that he's a sook. It's a bit like people (especially Catholic priests) not understanding the effects of sexual abuse on children. He's be asked by the media about the constant booing, but he said that it's part of the game. Nobody has made an official complaint – this is all media driven, they are the one's asking the questions. Would you like to mention the other times that he 'makes official complaints'?

Eddy , as i understand it , this War Dance (Goodes called it a "challenge") is SUPPOSED to be done in a face to face situation. It is an attempt to intimidate your OPPOSITION Surely corruption the purpose of this traditional "challenge" by using it to taunt a bunch of people who cannot respond is a disgrace. Goodes took a traditional Aboriginal challenge .........and distorted it for his own ends,

Almost every AFL team has Indigenous footballers ...............yet it seems that ONLY Adam Goodes is routinely booed. Clearly his indigenous background has nothing to do with it. The act of winding up the opposition fans AFTER the game was won gives a clue to why he is disliked. I wonder if Goodes would have done his dance if Sydney were thrahed.

Good to see so many psychoanalysts on The Roar, offering their opinions are what is inside the mind of Adam Goodes. He did a Indigenous war dance on a football ground, that's it. It's Indigenous Round too, so don't worry people, it won't offend your sensibilities again this season. But according to some, he's now a coward (unlike the cowards behind their big keyboards), he's immature, he should have done 'eyeball to eyeball' (yes, just like they do in the pubs of Kings Cross on a Saturday night!). All this finger wagging, people are effectively saying 'now now darkie, do as I say, not do what you say'. It's not the 1930s anymore.

Ballantyne would have been heavily censured. Goodes act was the act of a coward. If he wants to emulate the All Blacks with the Haka ..........then do it BEFORE the game when you stand eyeball to eyeball with the opposition. Not after the game , aimed at the opposition fans.

The issue with Goodes is that when the opposition fans have a go at him .........he makes official complaints. He really is a big sook ........which is probably why opposition fans give him the bird

You are 100% correct Sue , the Haka is a throwing down of the gauntlet ...BEFORE the game starts and it is done eyeball to eyeball with the opposition PLAYERS .......they dont do it in a cowardly fashion aimed at the opposition fans AFTER the game has been won. No wonder Goodes is getting the bird from opposition fans if that is his level of maturity.
