How would New Zealanders and South Africans pick the Wallaby XV

By Decs / Roar Rookie

While I understand there will be dozens of articles and opinions on the Wallaby Rugby World Cup team in the coming months from writers, punters and everyone else from Australia.

However, I have always taken a great deal of interest in how other countries view our players and chances. In particular, those from our fellow SANZAR nations and Southern hemisphere powerhouses South Africa and New Zealand.

We all watch enough Super Rugby to form an opinion on other countries’ form and who they should select in their teams. The Roar is a great place to express such opinions.

Everyone in Australia will have local bias and theories, but I put this to our fellow antipodean Roar commentators such as Diggercane and KiwiDave, and South African friends Harry Jones and Armand, and the rest of our South African contingent. How do you see our XV shaping up?

I personally believe we have greater depth than in recent memory, having this depth is pointless unless we can build a game plan and execute around this.

And for what it is worth, and just to get the discussion going here is my starting Wallaby XV, match-day squad and Rugby World Cup 31:

Slipper
Moore (c)
Kepu
Simmons
Skelton
Fardy
Pocock
Higginbotham
Genia
Foley
Speight
Toomua
Kuirindrani
Horne
Folau

Res: Sio, Tatafu Polota-Nau, Holmes, Jones, Hooper, Phipps, Cooper, Adam Ashley-Cooper

Squad: Robinson, Hanson, Horwill, McMahon, Palu, Giteau, Leali’ifano, James O’Connor, Kurtley Beale

Beale like Nonu is the Man of the Moment in the Big Show. Nonu for years was a terrible super rugby player but in the black jersey he lifted. Beale is well respected all over the rugby world. Unfortunately, many roar supporter can't see that far, but the MoM Beale is in my team.

I reckon Giteau has to be there. I've never really seen much in Matt Toomua. Never notice him in a game.

Good goal kickers don't help if they leak tries though. Always a tough optimization problem.

I had my say earlier Taylorman but to add i think AAC has right wing sewn up. A great finisher. Aussie has a lot of Fijian flair out wide, but AAC is solid extrordinaire and never let the Aussie team down. Giteau himself doubts he's good enough to make the squad and I concur. I like Jones as a lock, but I really love the toil of Wykes. He has mongrel and comes from out of that Western Force engine room that has troubled every super team these past two years. My tuppence to add to yours minus the exchange rate lol

I'm a Kiwi and have thought for some time that the Wallabies are selecting to disrupt oppositions, particularly the AB's by whatever methods, They need to get positive. How Higginbotham is not selected ahead of Fardy, in particular amazes me. At international level Fardy's major skill is falling into the back of AB rucks. Higginbotham is combative and skilled with good height. Ideal 6 or 8. Genia is a must, as is Folau at FB, I'd want a sensible experienced man as one centre, probably Beale as the other, Cooper has appeared to have grown up so he is my 10. Horne gets one wing on performance, run a sweepstake for the other. In the tight forwards, Steven Moore is a terrific player, Slipper and Kepu as props. I don't see Skelton as a starting lock, maybe as a sub, Simmonds is OK, no one else leaps out. The players and skills are there, they need to have positive tactics.

I see where you're coming from. I actually forgot about Timani when making this list, and would be comfortable with either in that bench spot. Though I'm not sure I'd consider Timani a lock option, unless off the bench. I'd prefer an out an out lock starting. Same reason I don't like Fardy at lock.

Woops :P. I reckon we could convert him before the world cup, get a Tom Youngs-type hooker like the English. xD

Yes AAC deserves a shot at consolidating the 12 spot. Can't believe no one even gets that here. He has all the virtues of De Villiers including not being a great ball passer! A hard runner, an uncompromising defender. A chance to build a rock solid position in a side that has few of them and its being ignored. People are saying 12 is covered by players like Giteau, CLL, Toomua, Beale. Well is it? All those players have been around for years now and not one has consolidated the position. Its always one being dropped for the other or being tried elsewhere. Frankly, they're all useless at 12 in terms of consistency. What does that tell you? Wake up people... anyway, I'll give up on it...carry on moving your deck chairs around the titanic.

I like your picks. I feel the same about Folau. He has improved his kicking but I still have doubts. At the Perth test against the 'Boks last year, time and time again they would kick to Folau. Whom each time would kick it about 10-15m.

If the Wallabies had won their last 20 in a row, or even their last 5, I would be quite hesitant to make any changes. But they are coming off the back of a 1 from 4 spring tour and are sitting 6th in the world, there is really nothing to lose. The only experience really being given up is the experience of losing games that could have been won.

So I am a big nerd, and wanted to see what the team would wind up being, so I tallied up all the votes. I counted each time a player was selected as a starter, bench player, or part of the wider squad. Starters obviously got the most votes (only one tie which was broken by total votes). Your squad: 1. Slipper (runaway leader) 2. Moore (Only 2 votes for another starter) 3. Kepu (Only 3 votes for another starter) 4. Skelton (runaway leader) 5. Simmons (runaway leader) 6. Fardy (second place was Higgers, 4 votes behind) 7. Pocock (Only 2 votes for another starter) 8. Higgenbotham (1 vote ahead of Palu) 9. Genia (only 3 votes for another starter) 10. Cooper (runaway) 11. JOC (1 vote ahead of Horne) 12. Giteau (tied with Toomua, but blew Toomua away in total votes) 13. Kuridrani (Only 1 person didn't pick him as the starting 13) 14. Speight (2 votes ahead of Horne) 15. Folau (runaway) 16. TPN (Hansen was close) 17. Sio 18. Holmes 19. Horwill 20. Palu 21. Phipps 22. Foley 23. Horne Wider Squad (highest remaining vote counts, with position taken into account) Third Hooker: Hansen Fifth Prop: Weeks Fourth Lock: Coleman Back Row: Hooper Third Scrummy: Stirzaker Toomua Kerevi AAC

Giteau wouldn't make this Wallabies side. Aussie already have their 10, 12 positions covered with four ball players in Lealiifano, Toomua, Foley and Cooper. The bolter will be Hunt. Pocock has his bags packed but Hooper wears the 7 and captaincy in my eyes. I'm a real Higginbotham fan and Mc Calman impresses me in a pack that plays above it's weight every game. Smith seems to be playing great stuff overseas and would probably be no33 player on the roster with Fardy required as lock/loosie cover. Skelton is all the rave but Aussie need the tight tight stuff in it's front five and Howell gets my nod for that role. Congrats to AAC. He's been a true warrior for Aussie rugby and deserves his place in the squad. I've always been an O'Connor fan and Kurtley Beale is such a magician. He'll go. Giteau will join Smith as a call up player.

Jessie Kriel? One more full season for the SB 15. But he's got to take care of his knee. Meantime, he could be capped as a replacement back. He's got the best attack stat in the comp.

Kreil is great IMO the best open side flanker the boks have, better than Louw. Happy that Meyer won't pick him.

I agree with that A big bustling 12 who sets a ruck target 5 m downfield so the loosies aren't pinged for side entry or lose contests on the deck A crash tackler who loosens the ball I like it In the meantime.... Gits!
