Stuart Dew is the only man for Carlton

By Liam Sheedy / Roar Guru

Stuart Dew is the coach Carlton require for the rebuild ahead.

Dew was a premiership player at Port Adelaide in 2004 and Hawthorn in 2008. More importantly, he was also involved at both clubs at different times in their development.

He was at Port Adelaide as they entered the AFL, and was recruited at Hawthorn a year out of retirement to help prepare the team to challenge for the flag.

Dew played under some of the game’s most esteemed coaches: the legendary John Cahill, who coached Port Adelaide to 10 SANFL premierships, Mark Williams, Alastair Clarkson and he is now working with John Longmire – all have won premierships. These respected coaches have no doubt helped mould Dew the person, and the football philosophies he believes in.

Dew has been at the Sydney Swans since 2009, and is so highly rated that Paul Roos was keen to take Dew with him to Melbourne as an assistant.

Carlton has a disjointed list that requires a lot of development, and Dew’s first two years at Sydney were as a development coach. In 2011 he looked after the defence and is now in charge of stoppages. Having been involved in more than one discipline will have rounded his overall ability to coach and structure a competitive outfit.

Carlton has a rich history and heritage, but it has been 20 years since they last tasted grand final success. What must make Stuart Dew attractive to Carlton is he has had success at every club he has been involved with.

Some will argue at 35 years of age he does not have the experience, but how much is experience is enough? Dew has been involved in an AFL football environment for almost 20 years.

Carlton need fresh ideas and to re-connect with their members and supporters. Stuart Dew will get Carlton playing and developing the right way.

Dino Leaf - Not one particular person but I do have a type which Caracella fits pretty well - I want a young untried coach who has been an assistant for a while at one of the clubs who has been dominant over the past 5 years (ie Geelong, Hawthorn, Sydney perhaps Freo). If the also had premiership success as a player it is a bonus. Dew also fits well as he has been successful as a player at 2 clubs and come through both Hawthorn & Sydney. I will also say I am incredibly impressed with the selection panel the blues have put together and it gives me great confidence they will find the right man.

Macca - who would you personally like to see appointed Carlton's next coach?

Dino Leaf - He does seem a good fit with that experience. It is the thing, you don't really know what is out there until you start looking.

Has anybody even considered Blake Caracella? As a player, he won Premierships in 2000 and 2003, for Essendon and Brisbane, respectively. He has been in the AFL coaching system as an assistant since his retirement at the end of 2006. His roles have varied from 'Opposition Coach' to working with players across all lines. These are the kinds of personable trades Carlton require in a coach. The versatility doesn't hurt, either. Caracella has been an assistant at Geelong since 2010, and is held in high esteem down at Kardinia Park. Blake Caracella KNOWS success. Carlton CRAVES success. Seems like a very compatible fit to me.

Carlton needs more than a new head coach. In all Carlton needs a body more than it needs a new head. The standout clubs today embrace a philosophy that requires the whole group and especially senior players to set standards, to build a culture and assume the authority to enforce it. The management performance company "Leading Teams" has been engaged to help over the past decade with The Swans, The Cats, The Hawks and the Dockers. But no-one has a mortgage on the theory. It's a tried management strategy. It could be a consulting company or a new coaching group, but whoever is selling change needs to rebuild the whole football club . Incidentally one of the things Malthouse did at Carlton was to end a contract the club had with Leading Teams, presumably in favour of an older vision of the senior coach as authority figure and mentor. Now that figure has been guillotined and carted off. No more head, no more father figure. Now the body has to learn to survive.

A coach tackling the Head coach position for the first time has worked well for the Bullfogs and ok for the Crows. Contrast that with the Suns who appointed a "veteran" coach and they have gone backwards, ditto with the Malthouse experiment. As they say doing the same thing and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity. Good to see new blood in the head coaching ranks.

Hey macca what would you think about scott camporeale? They were chatting to him about it over in sa and he seemed interested. He is a club great and has had a huge amount of experience at Adelaide. He has also seen 3 different coaching tenures that have all been very different. He went through the tippet saga an understands how to build a midfield/team through tough sanctions. In my opinion one of the most underrated midfield coaches going around. I know Adelaide is not the best team in the comp but there midfield at full strength is close to it.

You would have to assume that Stewart Dew and Brendon Bolton would have to be top of the list to take over as coach. I cant think of anyone else I would really want to take over.

I think Laidley's time has come and gone. Less than 50% winning ratio as a senior coach, 1 finals win in 5. Unfortunately the clubs he has been involved at since haven't really had much success. At Port Adelaide with Mark Williams and Primus were not exactly great times, St Kilda as they started to slide and then been at Carlton since.

Matthew Knights is a dud. He had a 2 year contract at the Port Adelaide Magpies and after his first year he missed the finals (only the clubs 6th time in 130 year+ missing the finals). There was a lot of outside speculation he should be sacked but internally it was decided to stick with him for another year. He went into the annual review and being paranoid that he might be sacked told the board they can't expect to win the premiership every year. On the spot he was fired. Know your club buddy! Kudos Liam for mentioning "the legendary John Cahill". Should be credited with 11 premiership but didn't sit in the chair on GF day as he was busy getting the AFL team ready (and what a job he did!). Tha'st 3 three-peats he got when many times they were under dogs. Anyway... Carlton need a lot of work. The coach is just one thing. Dew will do well if given the right environment.

Of the above coaches, Wilson, I think Worsfold and Nicks would be the only ones that would fit the job, not sure on the style of the others to fit the culture. They are all good coaches, though. I think it will be Dew or Sumich and I would tip that either of these will see the blues in the top eight within three years.

Lroy - Laidley is already an assistant coach at Carlton - if he has great insight into the game we should already be getting the benefit of it.

Well, Id be having a good look at Dean Laidley... the guy did a great job at North, former premiership player himself. Dont recall reading much by stew dew or hearing any of his press conferences. Laidley wrote some insightful pieces in the media in the lead up to the 2006 grand final which was right on the money. I was impressed with what he wrote, he clearly understood the strengths and weaknesses of both teams and where they were vulnerable, was good stuff. The question is, would he be interested ;-)
