[Highlights] Origins heroes lead Broncos to victory

By Russell Jackson / Roar Guru

Brisbane’s Queensland State of Origin heroes have produced outstanding efforts to help the NRL leaders defeat Canterbury 16-8 at a wet ANZ Stadium.

Broncos and Maroons forwards Sam Thaiday, Corey Parker and Matt Gillett were terrific, while Darius Boyd was solid at the back in Saturday night’s three tries-to-two victory.

Thaiday in particular came up with some big plays, producing a classic one-on-one tackle to stop Tim Lafai late in the game while he scored a crucial try just before halftime that gave the Broncos a 10-4 lead.

It was the Broncos’ sixth consecutive victory and moved them to 30 competition points and four clear of the North Queensland who have the bye this weekend.

Canterbury, who rested NSW halfback Trent Hodkinson and had James Graham back from injury, did a great job to only trail by six points at halftime with the Broncos enjoying a mountain of possession.

Brisbane opened the scoring through winger Daniel Vidot who touched down on the left edge in the 15th minute after a simple shift caught the Bulldogs short.

Canterbury hit back when the Morris twins combined about 10 minutes later to level up at 4-4.

Fullback Brett popped a flick pass that looked forward for brother Josh to cross out wide.

The hosts cracked six minutes from halftime when Thaiday pushed off replacement forward Shaun Lane to score down the left edge with Jordan Kahu slotting the extras while Parker was having a well-earned break on the bench.

Lane scored the Bulldogs’ only other try when he barged over in the 50th minute before Adam Blair scored from close range 10 minutes later.

Lol. But that's not true. I happen to think Hitler was a good painter for instance.

But if you acknowledge Ms Wilson for doing something right .....you unwittingly endorse all of her bad calls in the past.

I don't think the Sharks will sign him unless he quits origin. Which is probably fair enough. How many club games has he played this year? Apparently he is the second highest paid player in the game.

Amen. He was very quiet on Wednesday though. Didn't really hear him at all in the second half. But then i think they all were just stunned.

Gal is more of a front rower for me. In a game like that last Origin. If I was NSW, I would prefer Gallen than Parker. Which is a pretty big rap.

I would like to think that i could look past my utter hatred for the man and judge him on footy alone.

Webcke to start for me. He and Harragon are the best. I would have Petero as well. Gaz in the centres. Wow. I would take Hodges before Gaz. I would take a bunch of players actually. Never really rated him. Is Daley post 98?

Alex, I know we disagree on another topic involving the Sharks ;) but it's hard to argue with that summary of Gallen and Parker and I think you've probably nailed it there. They are both at the top of the totem pole but aren't necessarily the same type of player - even though generally we all seem to think they are.

While it'll no doubt earn me some projectiles in this QLD love-in, I thought the way the Kangaroos used Gallen and Parker in the world cup (Gallen starting, Parker off the bench when the game opened up a bit) played to the best of both. Gallen is good in the stages of the game when things are tight and physical, his ability to gain metres when the defence is fresh and getting off their line quickly in numbers is probably the best of any Australian forward, Parker is not so good in that regard but he has good attacking footwork and I think reads situations better with his ball use (offloads and passing). Both are strong defenders with little to separate them. Which one of those do you rate higher? I suppose that's down to what the team needs, but I'd argue that Gallen has qualities that are less common among Australian forwards.

I have the volume down low as Gus does my head in these days : ) It would be odd seeing him in another clubs colours. What would his current market value be?

Yeah, I've noticed that. Also noticed Dhil Rothfield came out and defended the muppet a few days prior. Interesting.

Yeah, Clyde for mine also. First time I ever supported was the Raiders. This whole Player Loyalty Rather Than Club Loyalty Thing I have actually started there. Courtesy of Ricky Stuart. It was very hard supporting a team that had Stuart...even with Clyde in it. To be honest, I actually think even in his earlier days Gallen was more a traditional prop whereas Parker has been more a tradiitonal lock, since about 2008 onwards anyway. He was a bench front rower back in the day. Roll On De-Odourant Head and everything. As for 1998 - a lot players might have suited up at 13 but were really just backrowers who could play anywhere. Quite unlike the locks of today who are middle third aficianados. My All-Star Representative forward pack from 1998 onwards goes a bit like this: Paul Harragon Cameron Smith Steven Price Steve Menzies Bradley Clyde Brad Fittler. With Clyde in the middle, Menzies and Fittler on the edges. In that old diamond formation that Manly used to play when Glenn Stewart was there. Webcke, Hindmarsh, Tallis and Darren Smith on the bench. Backs are: Lockyer (c) Sailor Gasnier Inglis Tuqiri Daley Johns.

Muzz, Nothing sorted yet... I think the club want him to pull the pin on rep footy (which may be selfish but is the best thing for the club). I hope they sort it out and he stays on for another year.... it would be tragic if he ever played for another NRL side.

Because he is such a polarising figure - a lot of people forget just how good a forward Gallen has been. He is just about always the best forward on the ground in a game he has played in - especially at rep level for NSW and Australia. At those higher levels - he has won numerous man of the match awards including the wally lewis medal over an origin series and at international level his won even more man of the match awards plus he has won harry sunderland medal twice as the Kangaroos best - that's a rare feat. He was nominated for the Golden Boot award as well which is just as rare for a forward. You can see how much Australia has missed him - the pack has struggles in the past 5 outings without him. Even this year in the two origin matches his played, he was one of NSW best in both and for the Sharks - his only played a handful of games but has pretty much made 200m in each game, pops out a couple offloads every time and makes a tonne of tackles. One thing that has got better with age is that he doesn't give away penalties anymore - his a much smarter player now. The fact that he is such a polarising figure overlooks the fact he has been such a great player on the field.

Let's not forget that Parker was on the better side of Wednesday nights scoreline and his club team is currently sitting on top of the ladder. This does tend to influence things. What was said about Gals new deal with the Sharks in todays coverage?

Interesting note about Rebecca Wilson. She is the only Media personality that I know of who has publicly called for Bozos head.

On his best day (that 1 origin game in 2011) I would pick Gallen. But over a career. You throw in goal kicking. Plus he's never really had an off field incident that i recall. I would go with Parker.
