Match Preview:

Australia have gone back to the future recalling Matt Giteau, Drew Mitchell, Greg Holmes, Will Genia and Quade Cooper for their Rugby Championship opener against South Africa. In his first team announcement for a home test, coach Michael Cheika has gone for the tried and tested.

Giteau, who won his 92nd cap against Samoa in 2011, will line-up at second five eight alongside Cooper at first five.

Cooper last played for Australia with his Queensland Reds partner Genia on the tour of Europe in November 2013.

Giteau and Cooper are likely to alternate as first receiver with the latter offering more assured game management to complement the Queensland flyhalf’s attacking threat.

Prop Holmes, who looks set to get his first taste of international rugby in eight years, was named on the bench along with winger Mitchell, who made his 63rd appearance for his country against Wales in December 2012.

In the pack, Will Skelton gets his second start in a Wallabies shirt with number eight Scott Higginbotham and blindside flanker Scott Fardy making up for the hulking lock’s lack of a lineout game.

Chieka preferred Michael Hooper to David Pocock at openside in the hotly contest seven jersey, but surely playing both in the starting XV was considered. Australia will look to play at pace and having two outstanding exponents of ruck turnovers would have helped this cause immeasurably.

Springboks coach Heyneke Meyer has hinted that he plans to rotate players leading up to the World Cup, which starts in September, but there is only one change to South Africa’s starting lineup that beat a World XV in Cape Town last week. Schalk Burger returns at No. 8 replacing Warren Whiteley.

Elsewhere Victor Matfield, the 121-test lock, will lead an experienced forward pack that includes the world class front row of Jannie du Plessis, Bismarck du Plessis and Tendai Mtawarira.

Bulls center Jesse Kriel is set to make his test debut in an inexperienced midfield combination with Damian de Allende. Jean de Villiers, who went on as a second-half replacement against the World XV in Cape Town is being rested while he recovers from back from surgery.

South Africa has only beaten Australia once at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium, a 38-12 victory in 2013. There are seven survivors from that game in the South African line-up.

Australia enjoys a 9-3 advantage in all matches in Brisbane. Australia achieved their biggest victory in all matches in 2006 (49-0). South Africa won the first match between the countries in Queensland (9-0) in 1956.

Matfield's injury not as bad as feared. 2-3 weeks.

South Africa took off their entire front row at the same time pretty much and that is when the game turned. I know Meyer said he was going to experiment but that really left me scratching my head, they opened the door and let Australia back into the game right there.

This is spot on Winnie. However should the All Blacks lose I look forward to the chest thumping to come out of the South African and Australian Fans. They will totally ignore what Hansen and co have publicly stated, they will claim no AB team is weak, they will claim it is the strongest team that they could field, they will claim that McCaw and co are past it, they will claim it's the end of an era. Australia will be the best side in the World - Genia - Pocock - Hooper - Skelton will simply have no peer in World Rugby. All jokes aside there is an element of truth in what I just wrote. What impressed me last night was the Wallabies stickability, they never gave up and backed themselves right at the end to go for the win instead of the draw.

I personally don't think the All Blacks will be too worried about what they saw last night.

I have said over and over again that he played a great last 30. Before that he was pretty well irrelevant, except for a few good tackles.

"But he played great in the last 30" That is what I said about Hooper. I rate him, but we got smashed in the breakdown in the first half with the Boks turnover experts running smoke. Pocock stopped that.

CR I think you are being too hard on your team, not withstanding the game was lost. I think the blame should be laid at the feet of Meyer who probably subbed too early when a degree of dominance was evident but countered by the fact that all sides in the RC this year will be experimenting somewhat. Certainly the Boks seemed to switch off, believing the 'win was in the bag'.. a bit embarrassing even. Hard to say pinpoint though the decisive momentum switch, as it happened gradually as the pressure build, in particularly when Chieka unleased his bench. You guys have plenty of pluses with the young backlne, Jesse Kriel was good, Damien de Allande was good on offensive but he has some defensive frailties. Your back row supplemented with BdP was awesome and before replacements owned the breakdown and scrums I thought. Burger was fantastic, an amazing athlete. Not so sure about Ruan Pienaar though, his persistent kicks telegraphed mostly. La Roux was great on attack but his exit kicks could have been much better. I also would not be sure about the AB's taking the Boks to the cleaners next week either. Playing at home will be a decided advantage and Meyer if he finds himself in a winning position like last night, surely will not make the same mistake again.

I picked SA by 13, and had the correct diff for much of the match and was close with ten to go so I'm comfortable that it took a huge comeback and 81 minute steal of the match to be proved wrong. How was your pick playing with your nerves for most of the match zero? Not too good I'm expecting. That win was all heart, something I also inferred before the match, that Cheika would infuse more 'on the day' contribution to the match rather than actual prep or gameplan, and so it was in the last few minutes. Overall, I'm happy with how I thought it might go, even though I didn't expect the win.

Hooper was excellent. Re Giteau he should stay where he is and they should reconsider Quade. Don't put Giteau at 10 and make him kicker after one test back please! He's picked up some confidence and that could all go next match with the step up in responsibility. Just don't move players around!

Aah... Yes it is. Oz lose nothing losing to NZ or SA while they're ranked higher. It's the losses to the other sides combined with their beating higher ranked sides that caused the slide. Oz just went to fifth with this win, and wouldn't have moved if it had lost.

Tend to agree RT. Too much celebration for mine in that victory. It looked like a rehearsal for a post Cup victory at Twickenham. I'm all for hugs and kisses but there was way too much over celebration after this 'get out of gaol' game. Much much work to do. One positive was attitude. They found a way to win despite playing poorly. That was worth celebrating. I want to see passes stick, looses steal, and scrums win parity for full 80. Nothing about last night was ominous for others other than Izzy's 'marks' and a couple of our bench performances. And Hooper.

I think the last 45 is a big stretch Zero the last 20 definitely, as fir the ranking it really means little. Australias low ranking is not helped by playing NZ and South Africa on a regular basis.

So why even bring his sexuality up then? It has absolutely no relevance to the game or his performance whatsoever. Get over it your team lost to a country who have been struggling but just wanted it more and they never gave up.

I agree it wasn't until the South Africans made the subs did we see the game balance shift, in saying that Australias bench had a big impact and I think we will see them start in Mendoza. As for the ABs game im expecting the Boks to win over what will be another variation of the ABs line up with fringe players getting a run, big name players coming back after a few weeks off, therefore I'm expecting some rustiness. Should still be a good hit out for both Squads.

There's a pic going round that captured the exact second the ball touched the line. It was a try. But only just.
