Frank Lowy undergoes surgery after A-League presentation fall

By Riordan Lee / Editor

When Frank Lowy took a tumble during the presentation of the A-League trophy, after some initial concerns, it seemed as though he only suffered some minor bumps and bruises. Turns out it was far more serious.

As a result of the impact from the fall, the FFA Chairman developed a subdural haematoma – a blood clot formed underneath the protective layers of the brain.

The 84-year-old Lowy underwent surgery in Europe and has since been admitted from hospital and is recovering, according to a statement from Westfield.

“The procedure was performed in Europe where he is holidaying,”

“Mr Lowy is now resting comfortably and following a short convalescence will return to Australia.”

The fall took place during the presentation of the A-League trophy to Melbourne Victory in May of this year when Lowy tripped and fell off the podium.

He initially seemed to have been largely unscathed other than a bruised ego and a sore shoulder. He was cleared of any serious injury by doctors after spending the night in hospital.

“However, a few days prior to the surgery, Mr Lowy began to feel feel unwell, and an examination revealed he had a subdural haematoma,” Westfield spokesman Anita Sulentic said.

You sound like a person who is a bundle of joy. Do you enjoy sitting in your one bedroom apartment by yourself in the dark watching the soccer?

Anyone who laughed at Frank's fall is, to be blunt, a moron A speedy recovery, Mr Lowy.

Wasn't funny then and is not funny now. Falls kill the elderly at a high rate and people who have lost someone this way 'get' this.

Ok I've just been sitting back and enjoying the tantrumy goodness so far but I gotta chuck in - doesn't that stance contradict the stance you've made in the Sepp Blatter article today? :p

@Roger Cronin Absolutely right. I'm willing to give everyone a helping hand but, if people are inherently mean, I have ZERO empathy for people like that.

No, if I recall correctly Fuss, you also came on here and suggested that you would be laughing if his critics suffered a similar fate. Two wrongs don't make a right.

To be fair, if Fuss didn't think Sepp Blatter getting showered with $100 bills is funny, I think you're wasting your time on this one.

Perhaps, next time you'll have more empathy for any elderly person who has a fall. Rather than have a chuckle. I wonder how you'd react if it were your 84 year old father, or grandfather that fell? Would you be laughing with your mates at the accident, or would you be gravely concerned until you had the all-clear from medical experts?

Yeh you're right. Next time i wont accept it when all the news outlets say that someone is fine when they fall. Instead I will conduct my own tests and MRI scans on the subject as i have nothing else to do with my time and it is such an important factor in my life. Then I will go and act outraged so that everyone can see how morally correct I am

"He fell He got up He looked fine" Well, now you know that a person - especially an 84 year old - who falls 2 metres, lands on his head ... may not be fine even if he smiles after he is helped back to his feet. That's whey we use MRIs & consult neurologists and don't rely on "He looks fine" to diagnose brain defects after head trauma.

Some people seriously look at anything to act outraged. He fell He got up He looked fine Everyone thought he was fine We all thought it was funny because we all thought he was fine This is a surprise to a lot of people and i hope he recovers from this, however stop trying to play the moral high ground.

You obviously don't understand the nature of a subdural haematoma, or how serious head & neck trauma can kill you hours, days or weeks later. "He did not infact die"... wow. Some of you people seriously disgust me.

i thought it was funny but then as a former mountain biker with the hips of an eighty year old, i reserve that right to do so! ask your vicpol mates about 'gallows humour' ... ;) even more 'horrific events' in general duties than that night i am sure. But then i am trying to explain human reactions to either a robot or a too well trained apparatchik!
