Nine changes to Springboks team for All Blacks clash

By The Roar / Editor

The Springboks have made nine changes to their side that suffered a narrow last-gasp loss to the Wallabies in the opening round of The Rugby Championship in Brisbane last week.

Initially it was planned that eight changes would be made to the team, however a hamstring injury to JP Pietersen suffered at training has forced Cornal Hendricks to move to the wing, making room for the uncapped Lionel Mapoe on the bench.

The loss of Pietersen is a big blow for the Springboks, however Hendricks does have experience (and a recent try) against the All Blacks up his sleeve.

Of the nine changes to the team, five are on the bench, one is in the backs and three are to the pack.

Heinrich Brussow will pull on the number 6 jersey in his first Test cap since the 2011 World Cup, while Francois Louw will move to number seven.

Lood de Jager will start at lock in place of the injured Victor Matfield.

Speaking on the selections, head coach Heyneke Meyer stated: “Injuries have forced our hand a bit, but we’ve stuck with our planned rotational policy on the bench and it will be great to see what Heinrich, Vincent and Flip can do.

“The breakdown battle will again be huge and it will be good to see Heinrich and Francois play together. They are versatile players and I am convinced they will combine perfectly.

“This will be a massive Test – every match against the All Blacks is.”

Springboks team to face All Blacks in Johannesburg:
15 Willie le Roux

Pollard missed tackles about 1 in 4.

Savea isn't playing. He had an asthma attack at training before the team was named & Hansen opted to rest him. Ben Smith & Piutau are on the wings.

Trust me, we all know why Oupa was there. He's a liability, nothing more. That said Meyer could have smarter like this week were he picked nyakane at prop and whitely as loose forward cover. Much better solution

No way Meyer sticks to that back line combo. His first choice 9-13 is du Preez, Steyn, de Villiers and Fourie. As for Cornel Hendricks, he is a liability in defence and poor under the high ball.

The Pollard, De Allende and Kriel combination is new, they have not yet settled and communicatio between them will improve with every game, hopefully they will have worked on their understanding of whi marks where and often missed tackles come due to finding themselves in compromised positions and throwing their bodies into tackles with weak shoulders.

What a stupid things to say CP. Like the springboks and Wallabies the ABs are making plenty of changes this week. I wish people would actually look at the reality of what these teams are they are are experimental and they are most certainly not the strongest teams they could field, therefore they are understrength. Nothing that happens during this match or the RC will necessarily translate to the WC. Remember no country who has won the Tri-Nations or RC has gone on to win the WC in the same year.

Sorry to upset anyone. My comment was similar to those in the NZ Herald, Wellington Dominion, on Radio Sport NZ & over 40 years of watching NZ rugby & league. At least I'm qualified & honest. Anyhow it's been a proven fact!

I agree Harry. AussieBokkie, watch last weeks game - Pienaar was everywhere, and I mean everywhere. He coves holes like Prattley.

Yeah well some are just that way inclined and there's a vague point in terms of the ratio, and funnily enough in my experience as a player and fan over the years in South Auckland, 10 is remarkably under represented by PI's in comparison, but the method of making his point is as you say Digger.

Well to respond along the lines of that awkward tone...luckily Sapoaga plays the position like a white boy then. It's true there aren't many successful PI 10's in comparison to other positions, outside backs and loose forwards usually suiting their flair, pace and/ or strength more but I think he'll go fine with the support he'll have around him. Pollard will be an AB target after last year so he'll play a part in that. But he's deserved his chance after leading his side through the SXV season and with Cruden out its part of the reality that we need to bat to four 10's and Sapoaga is the forth after DC, Slade and Barrett, all three having potential issues in the position.

Thank Jerry, yes it is 4+20, he has been on winning team 18 from 24 Re his 14 wins v Ireland, when Brian O'Driscoll retired I read that O'Driscoll had played in each of those 14 losses for Ireland. Happy to be corrected if someone checks.

Pienaar is probably the least fairly assessed test player in SA

Injuries taken into consideration, the only glaring issue I have with the stating XV is at number 9. Reinach is still raw but offers so much more than Pienaar's terribly pedestrian play. 10, 12 and 13 is a combination that excites the hell out of me! -- Comment from The Roar's iPhone app.

Boks to win by 6.I would've started Slade and get him ready cause Carter won't make it through the RWC, anyway ABs will probably face France in the 1/4 final and lose? Anyway, Sopoaga will make the ABs lose on Saturday. Wallabies will lose by 6 too. Moderated - Racial commentary will not be tolerated

Something very odd just occurred - on the 'Roaring Debate' sidebar, it had your comment like this "It is an underwater goth team"
