Victorian racing back on Sky

By Tristan Rayner / Editor

Racing Victoria has signed a five-year deal with Tabcorp to get thoroughbred racing back on Sky Racing across Australia.

The deal incorporates domestic and international broadcast rights, and restored vision back to Sky Racing in TAB outlets, pubs and clubs, on Foxtel on channels 519 and 520, and TAB.com.au and TAB apps.

RV CEO Bernard Saundry said that the deal with both SWM and now Sky Racing provides the industry with the best chance to grow immediately and into the future.

“We are very pleased to reach agreement with Tabcorp on a bundled five-year broadcast deal. To have Seven West Media and now Sky Racing join us in promoting Victorian racing across Australia and to a wider audience internationally is great for the future of the sport,” said Saundry.

“Well over 90 per cent of the Australian population can now watch Victorian racing across a variety of platforms and the collective viewing audience for tomorrow’s Flemington meeting will be the biggest for a non-carnival raceday in our history.

“Our key goal throughout this year has been to develop a broadcast model that takes our vision to more people, in more places and on more platforms than ever before and we have achieved that. This is a great result for punters, fans and participants.”

“I want to thank David Attenborough and his team for their commitment to reaching an agreement. We now look forward to working with Sky Racing to expand the profile of Australia’s premier racing product both here and abroad,” said Saundry.

“As long-term partners with Tabcorp in our wagering joint venture, we are both equally committed to promoting racing and building a strong, sustainable and vibrant Victorian racing industry.”

Gotta say I do really like the RV coverage and I watch it when my horse is running. The problem of course is, is this massive expenditure to cater for so few viewers going to be worth it ? When I'm punting I could care less about all the blah blah from the "experts", I'll do my own form thank you and all I'm interested in is watching my race. Having Sky Active on is ten times more beneficial to the punter than endless drivel. RVL think that just by having a FTA station will drive growth. Maybe yes maybe no who knows. They say it's now available to 90% of the population, but what's the point if only 5% of the population are interested and 75% of those people already have Sky. Anyways, now RVL can do what they please, punters are just happy it's back on Sky and most importantly now on the Sky media player online as well so no more site surfing and missing races. Time will tell.

Peter Vlandys needs to go. RV are trying to grow their product by showing it to all of Australia not the minority that have Foxtel. They need to be commended for that. Racing in NSW needs to be independent of TABCORP & not sign up to everything that is associated with TABCORP. SKY Thoroughbred Central is nothing short of a farce & no one in their wildest minds could even think the coverage is anything near what TVN provided. As for no one who asks has anybody been held accountable for TVN, I think you will find Vlandys was on the board as was Messara, so to answer your question no they haven't, Pearce was in their somewhere too. We need change in this state but sadly we also need a minister that is strong enough to rid Racing of the self interest that is so ingrained & sending racing in this state backwards. State of tracks, facilities, Randwick grandstand, what a joke we have become.

I think NSW ended up being in the 22 million area. Victoria would be similar, once you take out Cup week. However, the exclusivity is now gone with Victoria, so they will be receiving less Loss of wagering turnover + lower fee from Sky + digital rights from Sportsbet and Crown (which is very small) + and profit/loss from the 7 deal. Is that more or less then the original Sky offer?

Tabcorp have called Racing Victoria’s bluff again. A few years ago RV were going to go it alone and create their own wagering company and replace Tabcorp when the deal expired. RV ends up signing with Tabcorp. RV were going to go it alone with 7 on broadcast rights. RV ends up signing with Tabcorp. Seems to be a lot of chest beating and bluster in the offices of RV. Anybody there been held accountable for the TVN losses yet?

Is foxtel free? And they did sell off international rights Racing NSW signed a 10yr deal with Sky, RV did a 5. The TAB have the exclusive wagering licence in NSW for 20 years, Victoria for 12 years. Racing NSW 99 years still exists as it was part of the privatisation deal, by the exclusivity of that arrangement expired in 2013. That exclusivity is now the 20 year deal, similar to what RV have

Well here is the NSW version/view of events http://www.theage.com.au/sport/horseracing/punters-get-what-they-want-with-victoria-racing-back-on-sky-20150809-giuztv.html The 5 year deal with Intl rights included is interesting. I would love to see some $$ figures re media rights. Just this morning we see laid bare how much the NRL rights are. So how much for racing rights. Was flagged that NSW was $30M but I think inflated. Qld in the midst of TVN bidding v Sky was reported to be $15M - but then how is RQLD in a $28M black hole (which I don't believe until somebody publishes some numbers!!) So what does Tabcorp/Sky pay for Vic rights now on Sky1 and digital v what Crownbet or Sportsbet pay and its free on Ch78 and Ch7 for the big Group 1 days?

i actually feel very strongly about this feel and some people are ill-informed and making comment, which is fair enough, forums allow that. but RVL did not sell of the international rights. this is fact. they knew tabcorp would go hard ball and black them out for a while, but hung tough (through the low turner over winter). any house with a) foxtel or b) the internet or c) a tv that post dates 2011 can watch vic racing (bar a few in remote rural areas that were not serviced by foxtel prior anyway) free anytime they like. if you dont have foxtel, dont have the internet (not many i assume), and your tv is pre-2011, then go to jb hifi and spend $45 on a set top box. racing nsw signed a 90 year deal with tabcorp to be their exclusive provider. what sort of commercial entity signs up a deal for such a long term. this is the big point missing here. racing nsw are then hamgstrung and bound to the tab. they have no choice. vic had to then break away from the tvn situation. i actually smypathise with the current racing nsw board. what else can you do when the boffins before you have signed you up until 2090. so, after a 2 month teething issue, racing vic is not into virtually every house in the nation free of charge and remaining this way eternally 2090 and beyond. racing nsw is tied to what tabcorp want to do up until 2090. they are not private companies per se, but gee, i know whose stocks i would be buying if they were........

If what RV wanted was a drop in turnover, frustrated punters, loss of goodwill from TAB outlets, pubs and clubs, then great, they got it. They also gave away international rights, which was important to them And their product is only available to a) those with the sports package on foxtel, or b) those with mpeg4 capable digital tv's. That is not nearly every house in Australia, it is a minority Having not made a cent from 7 and going with their tail between their legs back to Sky isn't a win

RV have got exactly what they wanted, and congrats to them. Their product is pretty much live in every house in Australia, unlike all the other racing states, such as NSW , and they haven't signed a lifetime, give away your rights contract either, to obtain it. Well done RV.
