Jason Day wins his maiden major at USPGA Championship

By The Roar / Editor

Jason Day has won a drought-breaking major championship at the USPGA Championship at Whistling Straits.

Day had finished inside the top 10 nine times in previous majors without getting a win, but wasn’t to be denied in Wisconsin this morning for his first victory in a major.

Day finished at an astonishing 20 under par, to beat out two-time major winner in 2015 Jordan Spieth, fellow top ten player Justin Rose and South African Branden Grace.

He finished three shots ahead of Spieth, who capped off an astonishing year in the majors with a runner-up finish.

World No.5 Day birdied the second hole with a lovely up and down from a bunker and then started a huge push towards becoming the first Australian to win the PGA Championship since 1995 with three birdies in a row on five, six and seven.

A chunked approach into the ninth followed a bogey at eight, and it looked as if the wheels may have been falling off for the Aussie.

Day made another charge as the players turned into the breeze to secure several more birdies on the way in.

The putter was hot for Day, and he seemed to catch every break on the course. He was often on the inside of playing partner Spieth, getting good looks at lines and speed of putts.

He barely faltered with his driving, bombing several around 350 metres.

In the bunker-ridden course, however, he also had his fair share of work to do out of the sand, which he managed to negotiate without too many problems.

A blip at 15 may have had Day worried, as the lead shrunk to three shots with three to play, but he recovered on the 16th to make a strong birdie, and it was hardly in doubt from that point.

He becomes the fifth Australian to win the PGA Championship, joining Jim Ferrier, David Graham, Wayne Grady and Steve Elkington.

It is the first time an Australian has won a major since Adam Scott at the 2013 US Masters.

Matt Jones, fellow Aussie and leader after 36 holes, dropped away to be over par for the second round in a row.

Cameron Smith shot a one-under-71 to finish at five under for the week.

Absolutely Chivas, reading about his upbringing and where he came from to get here makes it extra special. It's a fantastic story, so happy for him. Seems like a top bloke to boot too !

Congratulations to Jason. He has been a great golfer for some years now and in fact our most consistent in major golf championships for some years now. To break through for his first major win...remarkable and with his work ethic and humility, more will come. To share it with his (only) coach and effective father figure in Col Swatton was special. Really, when you hear the back story of sacrifice by his Mum, losing his Dad early, etc., this is a special sports moment. Makes you proud he is representing Australia.

Australia, For ever punching above their weight. Great to see as a few years ago we were in a slump compared to the 90's and early 2000's which were the pinnacle of Australian Sport IMO

sorry Kingcowboy. it's just great to see so many Australians pushing themselves to succeed in a variety of sports. it was more a "look on the bright side" for the Australian rugby fans out there.

How good! I used to play golf with him as a junior up in Central QLD before he moved down to Brisbane. It's amazing to think that skinny kid on the bus we all used to hack on on the way to junior open golf tournaments (in good spirits of course) would end up winning a major. So proud of him.

Hey Rocco, I am Australian so please refrain from using the word "us" when talking about Australian Tennis players as I am not embarrassed by the way they act. If you are, well fair enough but talk for yourself. Well done to Jason and he should be proud of his achievement.

' Apart from the rugby supporters in Australia, you can’t fault the last few years in Australian sport.' London Olympics were pretty bad. The Cyclists papered over the cracks there.

Fantastic result. Another Australian golf major winner. Great to have 2 Aussies in the top 10 rankings too. Scott and Day. It's amazing how many different sports Australians try to compete in and be successful. Golf (Jason Day winning the PGA today. He and Adam Scott in the top 10 in world rankings) Tennis (although our mens players are causing us major embarrassment with their antics) Semi finalists in the Davis Cup. Soccer (Men won the Asian Cup in January. Women made the quarter finals of the world cup a couple of months ago) Basketball (several Aussies playing in the NBA. Bogut winning the NBA title this year. Patty Mills winning it last year) Netball (just won the world cup for the 11th time yesterday.) Swimming (finished 2nd on the medal table to USA in the World Championships a couple of weeks ago) Cycling (Rohan Dennis wearing the yellow jersey in the Tour. Plenty of cyclists representing over in Europe) Cricket (won the one day cricket world cup in March for a record 5th time. Lost the Ashes though) Rugby Union (won the Rugby Championship but of course couldn't win the Bledisloe Cup on Saturday night) I'm sure there is a few more. Also hoping for Jarryd Hayne to make the 53 man roster for the 49er's in the NFL. Apart from the rugby supporters in Australia, you can't fault the last few years in Australian sport. That is a wide variety of sports right there. Well done Australia.

Congrats to Jason Day, fantastic win ! He's been so close several times, no wonder he was emotional after his tap in putt. Well done again !!

Spot on mate, very well deserved. All class on and off the course, same for Speith - really puts the antics of the tennis brats into perspective. Buggered up my working day a bit, but well worth it!!
