What is a pass mark for Tottenham Hotspur?

Another English Premier League season is underway and all teams will start with different hopes and dreams.

For some teams it is to win the title, others maybe qualifying for Europe, while others may be content with mid-table or just avoiding relegation.

The question is what do Tottenham need to achieve for a successful campaign?

Tottenham have certainly been reasonably consistent in recent seasons as far as league finishing positions are concerned. In the last six seasons Spurs have finished between fourth and sixth every year.

After a fifth-placed finish last year no doubt they will want to make the leap into a Champions League spot, and be a more consistent presence in the top four.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino certainly did not sit on his hands during the off-season with multiple changes to the squad. Kevin Wimmer, Kieran Trippier, Toby Alderweireld and Clinton N’Jie are the names added to the squad so far. Some of the notable exits include Paulinho and Roberto Soldado, while 19 players in total from last year have moved on.

The spending is not done, however, and more additions are expected to be made in the next fortnight, the most notable Saido Berahino from West Brom who, according to media reports, is on the brink of signing.

So only two games in and results have not gone according to plan. A tough start against Manchester United resulted in a narrow one goal loss, although for large portions of the game Spurs were the better side. The match against Stoke was disappointing, however, and a case of two points dropped. Seemingly coasting at 2-0, but a Stoke fight-back saw both teams share the spoils.

The nucleus certainly exists for a quality side, littered with multiple internationals. What is also significant is the age demographic, which suggests the majority of the squad still have their best football ahead of them.

While Harry Kane might get a lot of the media attention the Spurs squad runs much deeper. Of the current squad only Michael Vorm and Emmanuel Adebayor are above 30 years of age, the latter very unlikely to be at the club beyond the transfer window.

Tottenham face the in-form Leicester City away this Saturday. It is certainly not panic stations but Pochettino will know the importance of a win and getting the points tally moving in the right direction.
