Nathan Fyfe cleared of rough conduct, Luke Hodge facing ban

By The Roar / Editor

Fremantle’s Nathan Fyfe is still in contention for the AFL’s highest individual honour after being cleared of a rough conduct report from the Dockers’ match against North Melbourne on Sunday.

Fyfe was reported during the third quarter for a clash with the Kangaroos’ Ben Jacobs, but the Match Review Panel (MRP) decided on Monday that there was insufficient forceful high contact to warrant any action.

Despite only causing a low impact in the contest, Fyfe’s poor record for the season had him just a minor offence away from an automatic suspension, which would have put him out of contention for the Brownlow Medal.

Hawthorn’s captain, Luke Hodge, was not as lucky, being informed that he faces a two-game suspension for rough conduct on Port Adelaide’s Chad Wingard.

The incident from Friday night saw Hodge make high contact with Wingard’s head, forcing his neck to bend awkwardly around a goalpost. Hodge’s poor record is believed to have had an impact on the MRP’s decision.

"They got the outcomes they wanted yesterday. Fyfe clear and Hodge back for finals." From this comment of yours jax you are implying that the AFL wanted preferential treatment for Fyfe and Hodge

Yes, we see high lingering contact every week and that's all I saw. Unless you've seen vision I haven't I didn't see Suban put his forearm forcefully into Masten's mouth (and let's not conflate Suban's actions in the 2013 GF - which I agree were obvious and unacceptable, into this argument). You know what, if Drew Petrie had off bitten Brian Lake - and Lake was obviously choking Petrie, I still wouldn't have accepted that as a reasonable response.

Yes Nev you sound positively chilled. "Come on here for the entertainment" ay? Now where have I heard that before? Gotta love the old "no, but you are" defence too, along with the "last word" dare, I suppose a dose of sanctimony will be next? I would of thought that if you came on here for entertainment you would enjoy the stimulation of an opinion being challenged, and appreciated a bit of back and forth? Not get all steamed up and start throwing around some lame name calling.

What an apt description of the MRP! "When shall we three meet?" Shakespeare was waiting for Nathan Burke to stand down so he, Johno and the full moon could collude.

It was changed when the moon waxed blue, as all AFL rule changes happen. The wicca's danced in the moonlight and they sacrificed a goat.....all was good

West Coast or Freo fans - if you come up against Hawks in the granny, 40000+ could always boo Hodge into oblivion at every touch for the duration of the match and continue it in 2016 until every club and venue adopt it nationwide - seemed to work for Hawks fans in 2014. Oh, and don't forget to have your play-maker kiss him on the cheek or better still pash him in the goal square when they're done and dusted. No misunderstanding on reasons for the reaction, pure and simple ugly, dirty grub rewarded by the MRP for thuggery. If there is a footy god, Hawthorn die a slow death, get trade sanctions for 2 years and continue to lament the good old Buddy-Roughie days.

"I don’t see Masten as a dirty player, but what he did a fortnight ago was" What did he actually do? I know what he was alleged to have done but I'm not sure that he did it and neither was the tribunal which is why they gave him a light sentence. History is littered with innocent people that have been found guilty and guilty parties that have been let off. My point is - I'm not sure what happened on the field that day, neither was the tribunal and neither is anyone reading this post. We are all entitled to opinions. I just wanted to make the point that's all that they are, opinions.

"you see contact like Suban’s on Masten every week" Really? I don't know what games you're watching but I don't see a player putting his forearm, arm, hands , fingers etc into players mouths every week. We see some army bargy every week which is what I think you are referring to but it's not as simple as that is it. This case was one mans word against another's at the end of the day. Coincidentiatally, the last player to be be suspended for putting their body parts into the mouth of another player was Nick Suban in the 2013 GF. So we have a guy that been suspended for 3 weeks for putting his thumb into a players mouth (history) and last week he is accused of putting his forearm into Masten's mouth. As I said last week, this case isn't as cut and dry as some want it to be. Masten has never been suspended, he is a ball player which you agreed with and he rarely gets involved in off the ball scuffles. Susan on the other hand has been reported and suspended for inserting his thumb into a players mouth, he regularly instigates or partakes in argy bargy and he has been known to play the man. I'm not defending anything other than the facts and we don't have a lot of them unfortunately. We also have a victim / star witness that is light on credibility and heavy on history.

You can read the response here and it wasn't quite as you portrayed it. 7:35pm: Masten: "I felt an arm or something around my face and mouth area and pressure from behind … squeezed into my mouth area." https://storify.com/AFL_official/live-chris-masten-alex-silvagni-and-luke-mcguane-f
