Postecoglou butts out of PFA-FFA pay stoush

By The Roar / Editor

Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou has retracted the comments he made to the media yesterday about the Collective Bargaining Agreement being negotiated by Football Federation Australia and Professional Footballers Australia.

The pay battle between the two bodies has escalated in the last few days, with Socceroos pulling out of scheduled fan appearances in Perth.

The collective bargaining agreement has expired and the memorandum of understanding between the two parties has been cancelled.

Postecoglou didn’t mince his words yesterday when asked about the tensions, saying it was affecting the squad.

“I’m not happy it’s getting played out in Socceroo camp,” Postecoglou said.

“I don’t have the players often and when I have them, that time’s precious. I don’t want any minute wasted.

“If we think it’s okay during the World Cup qualifiers to play out this scenario then I’m out of whack with everyone else because I think while the camp is on… lay down your guns and pick them up as soon as it’s over, and go as hard as you want.

“It’s not good enough.”

The two bodies are currently negotiating a new deal that will see the players pay agreements locked in.

Today, Postcoglou said in a release he wanted to retract his comments after realising they were inappropriate.

He has put the PFA squarely in focus in his retraction.

“As a senior employee of Football Federation Australia I understand that my comments were inappropriate,” Postecoglou said.

“I appreciate that I need to take sides on this issue. The commercial performance of the Socceroos brand directly affects the amount of investment in the match schedule, technical developments and sports science staff.

“In this case, the commercial boycotts imposed by Professional Footballers Australia (PFA) will directly affect commercial partners and will inevitably hurt the Socceroos program.

“I made comments yesterday out of frustration. I acknowledge that the PFA initiated the regrettable situation that has distracted us in Perth. I understand that FFA was compelled to respond in order to explain its position to the game’s stakeholders.

“I call on the PFA to undertake that no future Socceroo camp will be targeted in this way.”

This is in rather stark contrast to what he said yesterday.

Fussball ""The employer pays your wages. If you don’t like the employer’s demands … move to a new employer." See this is where sociopathy fails to grasp the "nuances". It's blatantly obvious mate. They have strong-armed ange plain and simple. Bad move. Stop sympathizing with the dictatorship and develop some basic human emotions/perspective. And cast a thought back to when out NT was in dire straits and a guy called ange came in, for a pittance I might add, and saved the immediate future of Australian national football before going on to leading the NT to a continental trophy.. Or we could all follow fussballs pov and say "hey ange u don't like it, p1ss off". Some people are unbelievable. You should pray to the stars that ange doesn't follow your advice and "move on to a new employer"..something that becomes more and more probable if the ffa continue to act like the third reich.

"FFA are completely out of line, his comments yesterday were pretty much run-of-the-mill response from the manager getting caught up in the middle Just goes to show how much they don’t get Football at all" Absolutely, unequivocally, this. Where do we live? Russia? Ffs this is ridiculous. Atleast in Russia they actually understand football when "making an offer one can't refuse". Anges comments were what would be expected of a manager forced to endure this shambles when fronting the media.

Exactly, the FFA's stupidity in making him publicly criticise the players affects his ability to hold the Dressing Room Like I said in a recent article, FFA want to have their cake and eat it, they rip off the owners/investors, and I remember how 'angry' they were when they (Socceroos) negotiated better conditions a few years ago,

Nonsense This is why they probably need a League Managers Association (LMA) equivalent for Coaches (many of whom are also former players of course) Ange as a Manager is a Stakeholder in his own right, not an FFA administrator FFA are completely out of line, his comments yesterday were pretty much run-of-the-mill response from the manager getting caught up in the middle Just goes to show how much they don't get Football at all

i don't deny the right of FFA for censoring their employers.l for whatever they see fit. I just think their decision is an overreaction and does damage them PR and could also cause internal problems in the Socceroos. As initially Ange postecoglu was neutral in the conflict Now Ange is picking a side and criticising PFA “I made comments yesterday out of frustration. I acknowledge that the PFA initiated the regrettable situation that has distracted us in Perth. I understand that FFA was compelled to respond in order to explain its position to the game’s stakeholders. “I call on the PFA to undertake that no future Socceroo camp will be targeted in this way.” ----- How do you think the players he is coaching will feel knowing their coach just publicly support FFA in their labour dispute. Wouldn't this have potential to cause squad disunity and damage relationship with the manager knowing that their manager is essentially the mouthpiece of the employer they are currently having a labour dispute with

This is not a big deal. 99% of Australian's wouldn't have even known that this game is on. Just trying to get some publicity for the game. Smart move I say.

"Problem is I don’t think Ange comment reflects poorly on FFA" I'm inclined to agree with you. But, it doesn't matter what we (outsiders) think. If Ange's employer thinks it reflects badly, that's good enough reason for the employer to demand the employee apologise. The employer pays your wages. If you don't like the employer's demands ... move to a new employer.

He is upset that the current conflict is affecting the preparation of hte team and wants this issue to be resolve which is perfectly reasonable attitude to have and he is not criticising the employer in the dispute. Essentially FFA basically saying, don't be neutral, you have to overtly criticise PFA and basically means directly criticising the players publicly he is currently coaching

Exactly. While what Ange said made for great headlines for today's papers, he needs to remember who he is being paid by. If he was unhappy with what the FFA and players union were doing he should have just kept quiet. "I'm just focused on the football." Unfortunately biting your tongue comes along with a lot of positions.

" FFA basically slapped him down and say he is obligated to side with FFA in a ridiculous." If: a) Your employer is in an industrial relations dispute & b) You are one of the most respected people in your organisation & c) You make a comment that reflects poorly on your employer You can expect the same reaction. Ange should have known better. Or, maybe, he made a calculated decision to enter this discussion because he knew it would get huge media attention & may facilitate a speedy outcome. Suppose Ange had a dispute with a player and an assistant coach decided to go to the media and say "It’s not good enough. We don't have players here for long, Ange should work this out immediately" .... ... would Ange let it pass? I reckon that assistant coach would be instructed to retract what he said, or he'd be out the door.

This is ridiculous heavy handed response by FFA, At no point did Ange criticise FFA in his statement. Ange Postecoglu was being neutral in the conflict and was just frustrated how it's impact on preparation. Yes he didn't side against PFA but that is fair enough as he is coaching the players who are involved in the conflict and publicly siding against the players who he is coaching is bad man management. FFA basically slapped him down and say he is obligated to side with FFA in a ridiculous.
