The plight of eight coaches - the best of the rest

By Edgar Slosh / Roar Guru

The AFL’s top 8 have thrown up a few surprises in 2015, so let’s take a peak into the crystal ball and see where they will end up next season.

Western Bulldogs
Let’s get the good news story of the year out of the way first. Luke Beveridge is the coach of the year; what he has done has been remarkable.

The bad news is that for every team that rises fast, the following year they fall just as fast. History is littered with examples of this, the most recent being Adelaide from 2012 to 2013. One kick from a Grand Final to 11th place the following year.

The Bulldogs are going to be handed a much tougher draw and opposition coaches will have the entire off season to pick their gameplan apart and plot their downfall.

Young players will have a lot more emphasis placed on them and backing up a great year is extremely hard. As much as I would love to see them stay around the mark, sadly, it’s going to be much tougher.

Trade – Minimal. Hard to see them being active but they may go after an experienced player.

Draft – Heavily. Get the next batch of players into the system and move forward.

Score – 9/10

2016 prediction – 13th

Hawthorn
This season hasn’t been as good as the previous two and next season will see them drop out of the top four. Ageing stars will have to be managed and turned over. It has been another great era for the Hawks, but it can’t go on forever.

Alistair Clarkson knows what the next step is and will need to take a step backward before you can maybe take another step forward. At the end of 2016 they will go through what Geelong are going through now. No man’s land.

Trade – Minimal. Some players may want to look elsewhere. If the Hawks have their eye on a player they will have to either use free agency which the AFL will seriously frown upon or use fringe players plus picks.

Draft – Minimal. They have the best recruiters in the business and finding gold has been their trademark. Later rounds is where they can find young long-term prospects.

Score – 7/10

2016 prediction – 7th

Adelaide
The other good news story of the year but also the sad news story of the year. How Scott Camporeale has managed to get this team to play the way they have after the tragedy of losing coach Phil Walsh has been unbelievable. It has people believing the unthinkable. Can the Crows win another flag?

Selling hope is the best thing a club can do and Adelaide have done that in spades in the last 12 months for different reasons. They have terrific batch of youngsters are coming through and improving at a good rate. They have very few retiring players. They will keep Paddy Dangerfield, Camporeale and John Worsfold.

10/10 for Worsfold who dropped everything and came when the club sent him an SOS. His presence can not be under estimated.

Trade – Moderate – Outside run is what they need and a few players who want to leave their clubs will end up at the Crows. The club has some currency in the market and will use them to get what they want.

Draft – Minimal – A few new young faces will be brought into the club and developed for the future.

Score – Phil Walsh 7/10, Scott Camporeale 8/10

2016 prediction – 5th

Richmond
How much bigger can this bandwagon get? By the end of September 2016 it may be classed as a State or Territory by the federal government.

Damian Hardwick has achieved good things at a slow, methodical rate and everything he has put in place will deliver success. The club has a terrific blend of players and depth. They have talent all over the field and the future is starting to look bright financially after a long time in the wilderness.

They will be one of the challengers for the premiership.

Trade – Moderate. The club has brought in players who play roles within the team perfectly and expect that to continue, perhaps increase with further signings as they push for success.

Draft – minimal. They know what they want and will bring in young talent with an eye for the future.

Score – 8/10

2016 prediction – 1st

North Melbourne

When your best player is almost 40 years of age you have a problem. Their leading forwards are the wrong side of 30 as well as their key defender and players aren’t developing at the rate Brad Scott or the football club would like.

The coach will be under enormous pressure if he doesn’t make the finals and there are some who think their future may lay elsewhere after this year. Scott came back angry after his lay off. He wasn’t happy with the way the club was heading and set about trying to fix it. He may need to get a whole lot angrier if he thinks he can go forward.

Trade – Moderate. North have currency in the player market and their needs may outweigh what they have to offer.

Draft – Heavily. There’s no point in delaying the inevitable. They need to draft youth and hope they can come again quickly.

Score – Brad Scott 4/10 Darren Crocker 2/10

2016 prediction – 14th

Fremantle
The big unknown in 2016 will see a drop down the ladder. Ross Lyon is a master at getting the best out his players and he needs to look at bringing in players to continue making the finals.

Too many ageing players will hold the club back and retirements will hurt in a big way. The team has too much elite talent in the midfield to drop away drastically but will need to find goal kickers and a big defender.

Trade – Heavily. The Dockers needs key position players to replace retiring ones.

Draft – minimal. Will only have late picks and best go for a few local youngsters

Score – 8/10

2016 prediction – 6th

West Coast
A great 2015 will continue into 2016. They have good talent everywhere and great back up players to fill gaps. They need to look for quality back up defenders and finding them isn’t quite so easy.

Adam Simpson has done a fantastic job with his players and will challenge again but will need to tweak the game plan to stay ahead of the pack.

Trade – Moderate. They have currency for some players that they can use to bolster their defense.

Draft – Moderate. Their needs aren’t immediate but they do need to look at the future in all positions.

Score – 8/10

2016 prediction – 2nd

Sydney
If the AFL overturn the trade ban the Swans will continue to be a major player come finals time. John Longmire is a little too defensive. He has a group of young players who have the ability to play damaging attacking football and he should let them off the leash.

To appease the AFL and move forward they may have to sacrifice Tippett so they can trade for what they need and that is replacing older defenders and if they can’t do that they will start falling down the ladder. Another club that could find itself in no mans land.

Trade – Minimal. The swans already have players identified and know how to get them to the club.

Draft – Moderate. The academy have again delivered and the Swans will pick up another star of the future as well as some good handy players.

Score – 5/10

2016 prediction – 3rd

So the ladder in order will look like this

Richmond
West Coast
Sydney
GWS
Adelaide
Fremantle
Hawthorn
Port Adelaide
Collingwood
Gold Coast
Geelong
St Kilda
Western Bulldogs
North Melbourne
Melbourne
Brisbane
Essendon
Carlton

Essendon 17th? I don't know Edgar. They had a horrid year in 2015 and losing Jobe did not help - If you remember we were considered as a premiership contender after beating Hawthorn and a narrow loss to Sydney in Sydney. Worsfold will do wonders at the Dons and I see them as a top 10 contender next year.

Ok,we will see, there's a chance I guess.Interesting about Kruezer though, not sure if the doggies have a hard medical or something but it will be interesting if anyone else will take him now.

Mattyb, I think that with the changes that have happened at the club with board and coaches and the trade period getting rid of those that don't want to be there will see the Blues come off the bottom. I can't see them going much higher than around 15th next year but there will definitely be an improvement.

totally agree. Its been dominated by the 'VFL' for too long. and if you turn the A in AFL upside down you get the old big V sign if the middle bit of the A fell down

This whole Malthouse thing is a bit of a myth.Carlton are pretty ordinary with a fair few players who don't really want to be there.Let's see how they go next year and even the year after that.Big chance to threepeat the spoon.

I think the Gold Coast are going to go backwards. I think (and this is only my opinion) that Rodney Eade is a Mick Malthouse type coach and will take the team backwards as Malthouse did to Carlton.

I would love to see a WA Grand Final this year and an SA Grand Final next year. I think the Grand Final location should be decided by the team that takes the minor premiership. History shows that very few have not gone on to the GF and having the opportunity for both WA teams in it this year, it makes sense to hold it in WA as that's where a majority of their fans are. I can see Victorians getting waving their arms about and raving about traditions, etc. but it is time to start some new traditions and make this game a truly national one. I wold like to get some feedback on what others think.

Hmm I wonder I we could have a derby GF this year then a showdown GF next year?

We've done it all this year without last year's #1 clearance player and B&F winner, Libba, among others. Port were the most recent slider, not the Crows, difference being they played 33 players last year, didn't get games into the youngsters, Dogs played 40 players this year, including all but one of last year's draftees. Think you underestimate the coach also, coming from Hawthorn, won't allow coaches to pick apart the gameplan. While they're picking apart the gameplan from this year, Luke Beveridge will be tweaking it and making changes to improve it even more. Tougher draw yes, and maybe slip a few wins down the ladder, but our record this year against top sides has been better than average.

Sorry Edgar another doggie hacking at the chain in search of your throat :) . I actually think we will improve but if we do drop it will be to 9-10.Fremantle will still be top 4,but Carlton you got spot on. Overall though I have no real problem with your predictions.Better to put it out there and share your opinion than just copy and paste this year's ladder and claim it as a pediction. Very well written series,I enjoyed.

The bottom six teams this year are a fair way off the rest, so it's true it's hard to see any of them climbing far in a hurry. I think of those bottom 6, Melbourne and Gold Coast are the only teams with the potential to really move quickly (the way the Doggies and Eagles did this year and Port previously), because of the dormant young talent on their lists. Carlton and Brisbane's lists are poor in the short-term. The Saints have exceeded expectations this year, but it's hard to see them improving much further without significant further change to its list (and who knows how long the champ, Nick Riewoldt, can keep performing so well). Essendon's list has a good spine and a couple of excellent midfielders (Watson and Heppel) but still lacks run and carry speed on most lines. Plus who knows what will unfold with the WADA case. I can't see GWS rising as quickly as Edgar suggests next year. They enjoyed a gentle draw this year and will finish mid-table again in 2016. Leon Cameron performed well but I can't see him arresting a slide when it happens. I doubt Richmond have the depth of talent over their line-up to finish 1st, but they are a definite top 4 chance. Main predictions I'd disagree with of Edgar's are GWS climbing so high, the Doggies and North falling so low, although I agree North will tumble out of the 8. Edgar, I reckon you should publish this article again in the pre-season. That's when Tiger supporters are most "up and about".

Adelaide and the Tigers will be in the mix for top 4 next year. I wouldn't have Freo and the Hawks as certainties until I see what they gain or lose during the trade/retirement period. I have a feeling that the Hawks may slide a little next year and I'm on the fence with Freo for now. Adelaide can climb quickly. Especially if they can retain the services of the old WC crew in Woosha, Teague and Glass as I'm certain they have played significant roles in helping the Crows perform as they have been.

Interesting review/preview. There's been a bit of criticism but I reckon your top 8 will be very accurate. I think the bottom 6-8 positions are almost impossible to tell to be honest. Except I'd definitely have Carlton finishing last. I think Richmond need to pick up a star (and win a final) before they are taken seriously but I'd still have them in the top 4. I'd even have Port Adelaide a little higher on the ladder than you do. Looking forward to seeing Freo, Swans & Hawks drop. I'm sick of them plaguing the top 4. Boring.

Selwood is an interesting one. He's had a few horror years of injuries and is yet to recapture his B&F winning form. When he's up and going he's a really good player but he hasn't been going for years. I hear that we may get a first round draft pick as compensation if he goes to the Cats, I'd be tempted to take it as we have so many quality midfielders already. Welli often plays tall and he's a great reader of the play. He could easily slip back into the midfield next year when so,e defenders are back. I do like him in the backline though. Ah, decisions, decisions - it's a really strong and versatile list at WC.

Don't forget Wellingham's sensational season! As a rebounding defender he has played very well this year! Brad Sheppard has also had a breakout year in defence and cemented his spot! 1 change to mids - Hutching's out/Selwood in. McGovern can swing forward/back next year also!

Spot on Jax and Gary! Cant wait to see the player young Liam Duggan becomes! If Lamb can take some things from Kennedy & Darling's game, look out! Jax - I still would knock Jetta back if he wanted to come to WC however I doubt it now. We will definitely take Redden though!
