Pritchard and Kasiano's foul play could be costly for the Dogs

By Brendan Hall / Roar Rookie

Dragons fans were left fuming on Saturday night following two acts of foul play on their star playmaker in the one tackle.

With only six minutes left on the clock, Gareth Widdop’s attempted field goal was charged down. Upon diving on the bouncing ball, the Dragons’ maestro copped a set of knees into his exposed back courtesy of Frank Pritchard and a forearm to his head from Sam Kasiano.

The Dragons were clearly upset with the incident as players ran in from everywhere to form a melee.

Diplomatic captain Ben Creagh expressed his disappointment in the post match press conference. “I didn’t think it was in the spirit of the game… two 120 kg guys coming after a 90-kg five-eighth,” Creagh said, with coach Paul McGregor adding, “We all saw it. It was disappointing”.

The two acts marred a hard-fought golden point win by the Bulldogs. If either is to be suspended it will likely cost the Bulldogs their chance at the 2015 premiership, especially with their chief playmaker, Trent Hodkinson, already on the sideline.

Suspension will provide the only satisfaction to come from the match for the Dragons faithful, who having lost Benji Marshall and Joel Thompson to injury were calling for blood. However with only one send-off during the season, it was never going to happen in a semi-final.

The challenge for the match review committee will now be to determine whether the acts were deliberate. A suspension within the finals series is never taken lightly.

I would suggest Pritchard will lucky to don the guernsey next week, but Kasiano might escape punishment.

It doesn't have to be intentional to be a crusher tackle and therefore illegal. Just like high tackles don't have to be intentional to be illegal

The main problem is that despite any and all evidence that could be presented at a judiciary hearing, it appears to be a complete lottery. There is no consistency in any of the suspensions; you just have to look at last week. Maloney escapes a ban for a trip (which used to be a send off offense) but Burgess gets 2 weeks (2 weeks?!) for throwing a water battle at a player who chucked the ball at one of his teammates. Foolish, undoubtedly, but worth 2 weeks? Ehhh... You could argue both ways I guess. It doesn't appear as though anyone knows for sure what's going on anymore. On another note, why wasn't Keary sent off for his eye rake? I was fully expecting him to be given his marching orders for that one.

It was pretty difficult to decipher most of that gibberish but the message that came through loud and clear is that you don't know the rules of the game. It's ok to say you don't like this piece of play or that type of tackle but to start saying they're against the laws of the game and deserve long suspensions just displays your ignorance. For all the talk of career ending horrific injuries and knees to the back and elbows to the head Widdop was on his feet pretty quickly and played out the rest of the game including kicking two important goals near the end. Maybe, just maybe the hits weren't as bad as you are making them out to be. That's what the evidence suggests. Penalty only on the field, no injuries to Widdop, suspensions totalling zero weeks...but apparently you know better.

the Barry, you've been spot on with everything you've said. what everyone fails to understand is that these 2 were going for the ball after a charge down in an elimination final with minutes to play. anyone who thinks what they did was done with malice is; a) a dragons fan b) a roosters fan c) somebody who has never played competitive sports d) somebody who doesn't understand rugby league e) a "sports journalist" looking for something to write about tomorrow. fmd people, it's just a game but if we lose Pritchard all it really means is eastwood and kasiano will step up and show what they really can do. a Pritchard suspension will lead to a dogs victory on Friday, so keep your histrionics coming biatches.

Maybe it's time we all calmed down as TB said there was nothing wrong with those tackles, and the match review committee agrees with him.you are basal outlet allowed to drop the knees into the back of the opposing playmaker of the opportunity presents itself. That's just good coaching and Des is one of the best. Nothing illegal or dishonourable about it at all. And of course attacking the head of a player lying on the ground is not the same thing as attacking the head of a player on his feat, what's all the fuss about.the M.R.C has confirmed this. As for holding up the opposition play maker putting your leg behind his knee then jussi the weight of 2defenders to bend him over backwards and do ligament damage, genius! Hard to kick a field goal or take the line on with a busted leg, are these Bulldogs ground breakers or what! That tackle alone will revaluation isle the game and again let me point out perfectly legal and sporting. I hope all teams start employing these legal sporting tackles, especially next weekend when the Roosters play the Bulldogs. Who knows with a little luck maybe Kane Evans can take Mbye out of the game. Hell if he really applies himself he may be able to end his career.

None we're send off offences what about Keary eye gouging gallen? Was that a send off? What about when Frizzell knocked out Browne with a stiff arm earlier this year? How about we move on from this, dragons didn't win because they couldn't score enough tries

Haha...of course it counts littleredturkey...I played junior rep footy for the roosters so technically speaking I'm one of your heroes... Fact is that diving on someone to make a tackle is not and never has been a penalty. Let alone a 6 week suspension... The old 'let me do it to you' argument that old mate came out with is a lame duck...it's got nothing to do with the rules. Good luck for Friday...

Widdop led with his head, so there's no act of Kasiano putting pressure on the head/neck intentionally, hence, not a crusher.

Yeah...Richard Graham is a real loose cannon. You're an absolute numpty. How could they be send off offences when there has been one send off all year and without carry over points the combined suspensions for the two incidents would be ZERO weeks. Honestly everyone's entitled to an opinion but you can't just make up the rules as you go.

The ref isn't actually a medical professional and Dugan was quite obviously moving the entire time so I don't think he was ever actually out cold. Whether or not he was concussed is a separate question of course. My response was intended as an observation that Dugan stays down a lot, almost every other tackle in fact, looking like his ankle, shoulder, knee, or eyebrows require immediate amputation. He invariably makes a miracle recovery and is involved a play or two later. I could easily believe that his injury wasn't as serious as it initially looked.

I'm not sure "played for years" in the 4 stone sevens really counts, The Barry. -- Comment from The Roar's iPhone app.

The Barry. Both those were send off offences. But the referee was too much of a gutless wonder to even contemplate sin binning or sending off Pritchard or Kasiano because of the kind of reaction he may have got from the Dogs (Richard Graham et al and the rabid fans). Remember the game against the Rabbitohs earlier in the year. The ref copped from the players for penalising Graham for a dangerous challenge on Adam Reynolds. Are you really that insensitive and bigoted?Alex McKinnon broke his neck from an inconspicuous tackle, this was anything but. Kasiano and Pritchard could have pulled out or at least lessened their impact but being the bullies they are they couldn't help themselves. I dare you to go to Kogarah and spout that rubbish about technicalities and nothing being wrong with the tackles. You sir will find your self in a neck brace in short time.

The referee said at the time that he stopped the play because Dugan was "out cold".

I am with you Sue. That tripping throwing stuff is not RL. Don't know what sport it comes from but I would like it outlawed,. Refs could call it if deliberate and let accidental leg contact go. When Marshall was tacked I winced. We don't want our playmakers rubbed out with this stuff.
