The Jets are back and ready to soar

By Heather Williams / Roar Pro

The A-League is ready to rumble, with just three weeks until the 2015-16 season kicks off.

While we fumble through the usual pre-season friendlies, signings, and fan rivalries, there is one team that now, more than ever are, are ready to prove that they can again reign as champions.

The Newcastle Jets, on the brink of disaster last year, with an owner who couldn’t care less, a coach who thought it was a good move to sack five of their senior players (presumably on instruction from said owner), and players who were at their wits end, are now ready to play football.

With a new boss in former Fulham assistant coach Scott Miller, and a throwback to their traditional gold kits, the Jets are ready to ignite their passion for the game and their community – something all Novocastrians are excited about.

Former Socceroo David Carney is back in the mix, and is proving to be a handful for most defenders, while goalkeeper Mark Birighitti has declared that he is enjoying his football more than ever, after returning from loan club A.S. Varese in Italy’s Serie B.

The refreshed Jets continued to push through their pre-season with a nil-all draw against A-League heavyweights the Brisbane Roar, with Miller saying he was “pleased with where things are at”.

With community engagement, team bonding and positive results on the field, it is easy to see the squad are in their happy place; heartening signs for a proud football community.

The Newcastle Jets this year are hashtagging #TogetherWeCanSoar. The heights they reach will intrigue the entire football community.

Please no more Jets "soar, land, take off, take flight, crash to earth, wings clipped, hit turbulence" though! It's enough to make a man hit the eject button......

It was. Haven't heard an update on Broich but it was a good solid contact (I was right behind the goal where it happened) and the fact he played on for another 20 minutes suggests pain but not a break.

Yes, thought Jets looked good. Though the match was fairly even and hoping Broich didn't reinjure himself too badly. Good little turnout at Cleveland.

In attendance at the FFa game vs Perth, the vibe was positive, and the team felt like a fresh start. I'm not expecting Jets to win the comp, but I think Miller is a great investment.

Their fans are a credit to the A League, if you want loyalty then their membership numbers are proof, just a shame the F3 derby has tapered off it used to have some real spice.

Thanks, sorry that's my mistake. But hopefully the points still valid - this is a team and coaching structure with spirit

Nice article Heather, I was at the recent Roar/Jets game and I was impressed with the Jets performance. Miller seems to have created a team in the style of his choosing - he himself got sent off for showing too much passion from the sidelines which his team reflected on the pitch. Jets played hard and in Roars face for 90 minutes and I think they are going to be a handful for any team this season. Looking at the squad and the style of play I think they might struggle as the season goes on, not least because of a lack of depth in the squad, so I'd expect them to have a much better first half of the season than second. Certainly things look to be going in the right direction if that one game is any indication
