Roar eyeing Spanish veteran Corona

By Vince Rugari / Wire

There’s finally some refreshing news for Brisbane Roar fans, with the club reportedly poised to sign Spanish veteran Corona as a replacement for Luke Brattan.

Corona, whose full name is Miguel Angel Garcia Perez-Roldan, underwent a medical in Spain on Tuesday and is close to agreeing to terms with the three-time A-League champions, according to News Corp.

The 34-year-old is a veteran of Spain’s top two leagues, where he has played almost the entirety of his career to date.

Corona has played for UD Almeria for nine seasons – six of them in the La Liga, including their most recent campaign, when he served as captain.

His most recent appearance for the club was on September 14, when he completed 90 minutes in Almeria’s 1-0 loss to Lugo in the Segunda Division.

While his age would be a concern, Corona played 33 times for Almeria last season and on paper looms as an ideal replacement for Brattan, who has secured a release from Brisbane due to more than a year of unpaid superannuation.

However, the Roar is continuing to fight for Brattan’s services, with the club informing members in an e-mail on Sunday they would “continue to assess any possible legal options” to keep the fringe Socceroo at the club.

Meanwhile, Brisbane’s stocks have been further bolstered by the recruitment of former midfielder George Lambadaridis.

Released by the Roar at the end of last season, Lambadaridis has signed a two-month injury replacement contract for Henrique, who is recovering from a recent knee reconstruction.

Brisbane takes on the Central Coast Mariners in their final pre-season game on Saturday night on the Sunshine Coast.

In further good news for the Roar, they have just tweeted that the Bakries have agreed a schedule in which all outstanding monies owed to staff and players will be fully paid by January 2016. Further, they tweet: BrisbaneRoar ‏@brisbaneroar 18m18 minutes ago @DamiendeBohun: BG has put millions into club. There are several interesting things in the 442 article where Aloidi promises two more Roar signings before game 1 .... First is that it seems very odd that Corona doesn't sound like a done-deal yet despite what's being said in Spain. Odd? Then there's the statement that "Roar have two visa spots open" which means one of Polenz, Solerzano, Broich or Henrique has become an Australian national - most likely the latter as he was applying for his in January although Broich is past five years in Aus now. This means Roar could be signing two foreign players not just Corona? And possibly a third in January if Broich follows the same path? And then for the first time someone at Roar has commented on the Theo v Young situation and it looks like they are happy to keep both which again is odd, the normal goalkeeping 1-2 is a senior GK backed up by a junior "good enough" to step in if needed, rare to keep two quality GKs in the HAL?

and it "sold" out in under 4 hours - 300 or so tickets plus local press. This should be fun :)

Always hoped either the FFA or new owners would fix the engagement piece, because no matter how hard the Bakries try I don't think they'll get cooperation now, just hostility.

Fuss - that's likely to turn out to be one of the most accurate things you've ever posted; I've got my tickets and I'm really not expecting a constructive meeting but I am looking forward to the big competition on the night - who gets the most heckles - the Bakries (favourites, just) or the FFA (strong contenders)? Way too close to call at this stage :)

Just took this off the club website tonight - someone posted it under a story, STILL no official news from the club - it is totally bizarre the guy has updated his Wikipedia entry and held an emotional farewell news conference .... "New Spanish recruit Corona, yet to land in Brisbane, has farewelled his Spanish club Almeria in an emotional press conference attended by a host of his teammates. “The opportunity to play in Australia has come up, and it’s something that I want to take advantage of not only on the sporting field but on a personal level,” 34-year-old Corona said. “It’s a decision that was really hard but it’s the right time.”

I believe the Guinness Book of Records is going to be attending this event, since it's all set-up to attract "the biggest gathering of whingers, whiners & complainers" in the History of the World.

Certainly the relationship of the club, as opposed to the players, with its fans is absymal. In terms of electronic and social media, a high school student could do better in 10 minutes a day.

Contempt sums up Fong and Dobsons approach, it may have moved to incompetence since their departure but I still think the word fits? and I don't buy into "there's no one going the job at the moment" because clearly there is because Twitter is getting updated, so is Facebook and the website is updated and this situation has been a problem for a couple of years now (at least).

Contempt is the wrong word, Paul. This is simply a lack of personnel and/or a lack of competence. There is no malice in it. It is simply people not doing their jobs, or perhaps, as is highly likely, there is no one there to do the job.

I wouldn't disagree with that - although the centralised web model should actually make it easier to post something as Newcastle did yesterday with their new signing ... and secondly management found time to send all members a pointless email on the Luke Brattan situation (it was hardly likely to inspire anyone to renew membership let's be honest) but then can't find the time to announce what is a significant signing. Why?

One of the problems all clubs have is the centralised web page which conservatively restricts interaction with the fans. The second is the quality of the media staff Brisbane Roar have on board. Finally the club is still a rudderless ship.

Perfect example of the contempt this club holds for its fans and typical of the lack of engaguement we have had for two years now. Last weekend members got an email from an anonymous club spokesman defending their position on Brattan, a situation most fans are over tbh and blame the Bakries for it any way. Then the one pidce of good news they have had for months there is nothing. It is amateurish alas even that casts amateurs in a bad light. Is it any wonder they have only sold 3,638 memberships - nothing has changed!!

Absolutely astonishing lack of communication from BRFC. This is what his Wiki profile says: "On 23 September 2015 Corona rescinded his contract with Almería and signed for Australian A-League side Brisbane Roar FC. He left the club with 312 official appearances and 22 goals, only behind José Ortiz Bernal." Is there anyone out there Roar?
