Wallabies vs Uruguay highlights: Rugby World Cup scores, blog

By Brent Ford / Roar Guru

Match Result

A strong win for the Wallabies who ran in 11 tries against Uruguay to run out convincing 65-3 winners at Villa Park tonight.

Quade Cooper had a mixed bag game setting up a number of attacks for the Australians, but he also had a poor night with the boot and was handed a yellow card early in the game which could be debated as a soft yellow.

Sean McMahon and Ben McCalman didn’t make Michael Cheika’s job any easier heading into next week with both managing to bag a double. Drew Mitchell was his ever reliable self and Tevita Kuridrani was able to sneak a try in the dying moments of the game after playing just two minutes.

Concerns will be with Will Skelton who left the field with an elbow injury after getting jammed in a scrum. Other than that the Wallabies while not clinical did what they were supposed to and that’s all that matters for Australia.

Final Score
Wallabies 65
Uruguay 3

Match Preview

The Wallabies will look to keep their Rugby World Cup campaign on track with a bonus point victory against Uruguay at Villa Park. Join The Roar live scores and commentary from 9:00pm (AEST).

The match against Fiji was forward dominant for the Wallabies, scoring all three of their tries through the pack, with David Pocock scoring two tries off the back of rolling mauls. It had a Brumbies feel of about it.

However, Michael Cheika would be disappointed the 28-13 victory didn’t land his side a four-try bonus point.

Cheika will be tempted to play around with his team against Uruguay, especially to avoid fatigue after a short break. Uruguay aren’t going to pose much threat, and a Wallabies ‘B team’ should still secure a bonus-point win.

It’s also a good opportunity for the Wallabies to work out the kinks in both their set pieces and ball movement. We will almost certainly see the backline rejigged for this game, with Cheika keen to see a few combinations in action.

Uruguay were never in their opening World Cup fixture against Wales as they were hammered 54-9.

The best thing about this match is even if Australia win ugly, they will have a week to prepare for England, and then another week on top of that before facing Wales. So while most Australians would like this win to be perfect, it doesn’t have to be.

The focus of the Australians will be topping the pool and ensuring that they don’t end up on the same side as New Zealand in the knock out stages.

Prediction
It’s virtually a formality: Australia will win in an entertaining, stress-free fixture.

Australia by 35.

Thanks for the call Brent. Good one, again. 42 short of the century. But a decent D effort. No boundaries for Uruguay. Good game SeanMc again. Apparently also MOTM. Is he also your MOTM mate?

I agree with your comments Rob, the Qantas Harmless Wallabies do not have the luxury of continuing to indulge his incompetence. I have focused my comments on the inept kicking performance because it is yet another reason to keep him well away from the first 23 selected.

I don't hold his goalkicking against him. He had a bad day with the boot today and that can happen to anyone. In any case he is not the only goalkicker in the team. Goalkicking is not his problem. His problem is composure. If he gets put under pressure he wilts. I mentioned Bledisloe 3, but I can also mention the 2013 RC matches against SAF and ARG, and even the 2011 RWC. I mean, I put it to you, when was the last time he put in a dominant performance against a top 5/6 team? Foley hasn't done so either, true, but QC has played more than twice as many Tests.

with foley australia definitely can't win the World Cup, but with cooper at fly half they have a chance....11 tries prove that and Fiji are no bigger threat than Uruguay!

The point was, in case you struggle with comprehension, that its pointless to use someones worst performances in the past, as their benchmark for the future. Do you want me to try to say that in one syllable words for you?

Criticising a player for that which is self evident on the field is not bias, Cliff. It is opinion. As to Foley and 45% I venture the more pressing concern is Owen Farrell 6 from 6 (100%) and Dan Biggar 8 from 8 (100%) with zero yellow cards.

Good points. But I guess what I'd say is that I would have wanted to see some evidence that Cooper is up to it against the top teams in recent times. And yeah, since 2011 he has at times played at the level I'd like to see, especially on the EOYT in 2013. He seemed to have improved his defence, his kicking, and his composure. For me, that ticked three out of three boxes from what I wanted to see him improve on. Nevertheless, I feel he needed some bigger performances over the last twelve months. Between injury and Foley keeping him out of the team, he hasn't had as many opportunities as he would have needed to lay a claim to the spot and the times when he did get a chance he didn't deliver. Might be a bit rough on him, but I feel through circumstance and yes, performance, Foley has the inside track on the number 10 jersey and hasn't slipped up badly enough yet to hand it back to Cooper more permanently.

Wallabies got the result they wanted. The only problem is they still look like the third best team in the pool. If anyone thought the Eng v Wales result made things easier for them they are living in a dream world. England are the home nation and you just need to look at Australia v NZ in 2003 (you could even count the final where Australia by all rights should have been dispatched fairly easily) and France v ABs in 2007 to see how much difference that can make when the home team's back is against the wall. If the Wallabies go into it thinking they have breathing room like the Foxsports commentators suggested they will get smashed. You just need to go back a few months to Eden Park to see what can happen if you don't go in with the right attitude. There are questions on the mental strength of this Wallabies team and we won't know the answer until about 7AM next Sunday.

I've never seen Foley have a stellar game without Beale playing outside him. I've seen Cooper have plenty of great games with multiple back line combinations. And I don't think I said that Beale didn't help tonight. But Cooper ran that back line well tonight.

No mate - not at all. Read the thread -- total bias - as the balance of comments are without doubt totally off beam. Cooper had a bad game with the boot. But then so has the other kickers who could do the job. Cooper did a couple of bad passes and flicks - but that is what you get with Cooper. But he set up a backline - and set up a number of tries. Something that Foley has yet to show. So was it a bad game? The yellow - not certain - but it happened - never looks good but then this ref was not consistent throughout. So for me bias and intentional - as it is always towards Cooper

You do not hurt my feelings. What annoys me is - straight out bias on an individual. I see no comparison of other's mistakes - and that is what annoys me. Not your statements. But there is no balance. As for kicks - 45% and yet we say it is his goal kicking! And yet Foley has never achieved 45% kicking? His running of a backline is the best we have. Toomua has not done it effectively. Foley - never. And Leafilano (spelling) is not as good as some think. And he is not at the RWC irrespective of it being an error in selection - but he is not there. Cooper made errors. But he sure as hell set up a lot of plays. In my opinion - going into the English game the WBs were woeful in terms of lost chances and dropped ball. Not many from this team will be in the team for England. But Foley will not do much to beat England. Your comments are straight bias and rubbish. The Bledisloe 3 game - rubbish! Foley - Bledisloe 1??? But then you are the GURU - on a keyboard!!

But Dan Carter is a top class international first five and Tim Horan was a top class second five. There is no comparison with this other bloke you mention, who routinely wears jersey number twenty something.

I don't see the point in your response. Was Rob's bias shown through saying that Cooper didn't have a bad game against a weaker opposition? He didn't even mention another player to have bias for. Further still, Cheika's preferred backup option is not from Rob's team. So to me, this 'negativity and bias' through his (god forbid on an opinion site) opinion, has caused you to seem like you are bitter and full of hot air :P EDIT: I don't normally jump in on other peoples qualms, but I thought this was just unnecessary.

I've seen Dan Carter have a few shockers this year (ironically after a return from injury). Does that mean he can't play? if you judge any player against their worst performance, who would make the grade? Some of Coopers form in 2011 was sublime...some not so good, but how is that relevant to today? Didn't Horan have a poor World Cup, and a great second World Cup?

A useless big log, yes. The selectors can see that as readily as me yet they still included him - a waste of money on airline tickets and hotel rooms.
