REPORT: John Worsfold to coach Essendon in 2016

By The Roar / Editor

It is being reported by AFL.com.au that the Essendon Bombers have all but secured former West Coast Eagles premiership coach John Worsfold as their new head coach.

Worsfold left the coaching game at the end of the 2013 season after 281 games and a premiership with the Eagles, before returning to football administration in 2015 with the Adelaide Crows as the club’s Director of Coaching, following the untimely death of coach Phil Walsh.

Worsfold was at one point a key frontrunner to coach Adelaide in 2016, but instead left his role at the end of the season, telling the club he was not in a position to stay in Adelaide long-term.

The Bombers have been on the hunt for a new coach since they sacked James Hird following a 112 point loss to the Crows in Round 20.

The other men in contention for the position at Essendon were Brendon McCartney and Scott Burns.

There has yet to be an official confirmation of the appointment from the Essendon Football Club.

Good on ya Jamie . If you were buying a house or a car would you pay for the privilege of a viewing or test drive? Don't attempt to ride a high horse when you are high yourself. Unless you've been billed for a 1 night stand by Lady who decided not to commit to you; in which case if you paid her for her time, then I'll accept your erroneous opinion.

Essendon fans beware. Great bloke that JW is, loyal as they come, all your game plan will be is "get out there and win boys". If that doesn't work, the revised game plan will be "get out there and win boys". And iIf that doesn't work...ah you get the message. Fair dinkum the Eagles made 2 GFs and won one inspite of the coach imo, they had kerr, cousins, and judd to get them there, that's all. Only when Phil Walsh was at the club and now Simpson have they moved out of the 20th century tactically.

Hird resigned, he wasn't sacked. I don't think Worsfold was a certainty to coach Essendon, he had to be sure it was a good fit for him and Essendon had to be sure he was the right man for the job. I thought it was well known that Chick had drug problems and that was the reason why he wasn't given a further contract even after performing well in his last season for the Eagles.

I think you are forgetting that he would have had a lot to do with the players that are playing this week in the Grand Final for the Eagles. and he got them back off the bottom when they fell off after the 2006 Grand Finals so I think he is the best one around at the moment that will be able to get Ess on the right track.

Were the other two really in contention? I wouldn't think so. Another example of the Bombers disregarding everything and everyone else for their own self interests. Should be forced to pay compensation to everyone else who applied for the position for wasting their time.

Daniel Kerr refuting the claims. I think Chick is a lost puppy that is bitter and twisted. http://www.watoday.com.au/afl/west-coast-eagles/daniel-chick-drugs-exwest-coast-eagle-daniel-kerr-angrily-refutes-claims-20151001-gjz1e0.html

My response matched the comment I replied to. If someone writes a more detailed piece questioning his character or the role that he played, or what he knew during that time then it may require a more detailed response.

A poor choice if true. Like Rodney Eade, a blast from the past is no fix for the future. He needs a team of All Australians to win a flag for Essendon. But he has no Cousins or Judd at Essendon. He's a spent force.

He sure does. He will get the club on the straight and narrow and playing finals before you know it.
