Referees for Rugby World Cup quarter finals announced

By The Roar / Editor

The referees for the Rugby World Cup quarter finals have been announced, with the All Blacks missing out on having Wayne Barnes officiate their match.

There’s no doubt New Zealand fans will be stoked.

Of course, when it comes to the appointment of officials, supporters are always happy to have a little gripe.

In this case, however, there can little to be upset about for any of the teams.

The only referees who might consider themselves unlucky to miss out on an appointment are Jaco Peyper, Chris Pollock and Glen Jackson.

However, all the refs entrusted to do the job this weekend have had good tournaments.

Here are the full referee appointments for the 2015 Rugby World Cup quarter finals, including the time of the match and their assistants.

All times are in Australian Eastern Daylight Time.

Sunday

South Africa v Wales – 2am
Referee: Wayne Barnes (England)
Assistant referees: George Clancy (Ireland), JP Doyle (England)
TMO: Graham Hughes (England)

New Zealand vs France – 6am
Referee: Nigel Owens (Wales)
Assistant referees: Jaco Peyper (South Africa), John Lacey (Ireland)
TMO: Shaun Veldsman (South Africa)

Ireland vs Argentina – 11pm
Referee: Jérôme Garcès (France)
Assistant referees: Romain Poite (France), Chris Pollock (New Zealand)
TMO: George Ayoub (Australia)

Monday

Australia v Scotland – 2am
Referee: Craig Joubert (South Africa)
Assistant referees: Glen Jackson (New Zealand), Pascal Gauzere (France)
TMO: Ben Skeen (New Zealand)

What do you think Roarers? Is this the right set of men to do the job this weekend?

I thought Peyper gave a superb display of how to ref a free-flowing game in the Samoa-Scotland game. I think he deserved a spot, but I haven't seen every game.

Let's hope Joubert remembers the rules regarding rolling away and playing the advantage when australia wins a penalty. I thought a player had the right to place the ball in a tackle. It's a bit hard when to do this you need to choke yourself. In the 15m of the first half there could not be a more blatant penalty to Australia that was reversed. 34m hands in ruck ignored, on half time australia wins a penalty about to counter attack, Joubert blows whistle. Joubert hangs around Australian rugby like a bad smell. Maybe spiro shares a holiday house with him in nz that was donated by nz rugby ? The fact that we have hardly any refs in super rugby and zero in the World Cup has a lot to do with the nz/sa pact administered by Lyndon Bray. Aru does nothing ? Cheika is gagged. There is a reason that the whole of the Sfs chanted "Jouberts a wanker" this year. Wallaby supporters are tired of the disrespect he shows our rugby players and its supporters. The Scottish game just got a whole lot harder to win with Joubert at the helm.

I agree Antoni. It was the same with Hooper. We will get no favours from this guy but Cheika and the boys know this.

You get respect from Referees by giving respect to Referees.

Until this year....the ABs will be in their most UNFORGIVING mode in the final against the WBs...for sure it will be tough but cream always rises to the top after a thoroughly good stir up....ABs for RWC 2015...WBs a very gallant 2nd..

SA, NZ, Australia and Argentina quarterfinal victors with a NZ vs Wallabies GF predicted finally as opposed to meeting in semi finals. NZ likely winners albeit it won't be a thrashing like they did at Eden Park this year as The Wallabies perform very well in the Northern Hemipshere World Cups.

Couldn't have expressed it better myself on both counts, Dave .....I suspect Nige sort of thinks along the lines of what begins at Calais......had the same view myself since about 1958...

Not excusing Joubert (as I didn't actually notice it) but it wouldn't surprise me if Moore did rub a few refs the wrong way. He gets in their ear every chance he gets and often seems to be demanding they listen to him rather than making a suggestion. I recall in that Bledisloe where he was talking to Barnes along with McCaw and going on about a 'threat' which a lot of people seemed to accept - but what I took out of that exchange was that he was talking over the top of Barnes even when Barnes was clearly trying to respond. He's got a bit to learn about ref management, I suspect.

I thought Joubert was OK in the Wallabies v Wales game and that generally he is one of the best. But gee, can he just calm down the blatant disdain toward our captain a little? I don't know what Moore has done but there was a clearly different and more respectful attitude towards the Welsh captain from Joubert.

All good WQ... I was having a little dig at you spelling 'pray' as 'prey'. Prey... as in what is caught and eaten by carnivorious beasties. And some plants. So, regardless, your comment works on both levels :)

To clarify Machooka, I just hope we are talking about the quality of the Rugby that determined the results and not any contentious Referee decisions

A bit of a SH bias in the comments. Poite reffed better than Peyper and Joubert. He more than anyone could feel hard done by. Agree Pollock and Jackson reffed well.
