Red Cadeaux was the horse that finished last in the 2015 Melbourne Cup. Snow Sky was 23rd and the last horse past the winning post. So who was last?
For the purpose of sweeps and those that need to know, it’s up to you to decide who came ‘last’.
Red Cadeaux didn’t finish the race and some people may say he was the last horse in the Melbourne Cup. He’s listed as the last horse in the official results – but notably, is given the designation ‘FF’ – failed to finish.
(Sadly, Red Cadeaux is fighting for his life in the Werribee Veterinary Clinic – pray for him!)

Snow Sky, however, was the last of those that actually completed the 3200m course.
Red Cadeaux, was in a strong position coming around the final bend but jockey Gerald Mosse eased the horse out of it. Things were looking bad for the horse, before it got up again and walked off, but with a serious injury to the off-fore fetlock.
Snow Sky, who was at the front of the field, dropped out of the race at the 400m and was beaten by more than 18.5 lengths.
The Roar’s own sweep is paying out Red Cadeaux as last – he took part in the race and ultimately, and tragically, didn’t finish. Our thoughts are with all connections of Red Cadeaux – we hope he is ok.
But many others will say Snow Sky was the last horse to finish – the final one to actually cross the finish line.

As sweeps are an informal thing you can go either way but you should have the rules sorted out before the race, because a horse not finishing is not uncommon. The problem though with paying out last place prizes for DNFs is that you might have race with more than 1 DNF.

Red Cadeaux failed to finish because he had an injury. Who knows what the result would have been if he did not have an injury. Can't you see the difference? He did not come last because since he wasn't in the condition to finish the race, he had to retire.
