Greenberg will 'have a look' at NRL gig

Todd Greenberg says he’ll “have a look” at the vacant NRL chief executive role when a formal job description is completed.

The NRL’s head of football is one of the favourites to replace Dave Smith, who resigned as CEO last month and with his term to be completed at the end of November.

Speaking at the launch of next year’s NRL All Stars clash in Brisbane, Greenberg – long considered one of the game’s rising administrative stars and a future NRL leader – was asked if he’d throw his hat in the ring to succeed his boss.

“I was surprised I’d get that question today,” he joked.

“The way I’ll respond is pretty simple.

“The commission are yet to formalise a position description and, once they do that, clearly I’ll have a look at it.

“Other than that, I’m not too keen to make too many comments on it.”

It was far from emphatic, but it is confirmation Greenberg, a former Canterbury CEO, is at least eyeing off rugby league’s top job.

However, he will face stiff competition with a strong group of candidates in the running as part of a worldwide search, steered by Australian Rugby League Commission chairman John Grant.

The NRL’s strategy guru Shane Richardson, Warriors chief Jim Doyle and Gold Coast boss Graham Annesley have all been mentioned as possible contenders, while the woman who succeeded Greenberg at the Bulldogs, Raelene Castle, is also reportedly in the mix.

The commission is hopeful, but not certain, of installing Smith’s successor in time for the new NRL season.

Let's just hope looking at it is as close as he gets. Should never be allowed anywhere near the job he has let alone the top gig.

How could an organisation like the NRL not have a formal jib description for the position. Isn't it standard business practice that job descriptions are done and continually updated? It is a joke.

NO Todd think you have burnt your bridges in the past,as per public perception. It has to be someone highly recommended (with the ability to bend and grovel and accede to leaks) by News Ltd from Rupert down to the plebs/underlings within his organisation. Although I do note indeed with a hint of pleasure, the utmost silence by the News crew ,since they lost the EPL to Optus ,thereby putting more pressure on them to retain the NRL.Maybe D Smith knew a little more about the realities of the new technologies floating around. In the meantime if it were me as the final arbiter as to who should lead the code,Jim Doyle would be my choice first and Captain Daylight second.
