Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle predicts Etihad Stadium will be gone in 20 years.
Doyle said the stadium cuts off the Docklands precinct from the CBD and it would be better to build an AFL-sized venue at nearby Western Park.
The AFL is due to take over ownership of the stadium in 2025.
“In the time-frame you’re talking, Etihad Stadium will disappear,” Doyle told Radio 3AW.
“It’s a great idea for another stadium close to the city, but I would have thought that’s one of the things that cuts off Docklands from the city.
“I don’t mind a stadium in the Docklands, it’s just we can look down and see Western Park, it’s down towards Bolte Bridge.
“There’s room down there to put an AFL-sized ground and it doesn’t block off the city from Docklands.”
Etihad Stadium opened in 2000 and is used for AFL, soccer, the rugby codes and cricket, as well as concerts and other special events.

The stadium is already surrounded by office towers & apartment blocks.......& there is no more room to build. The AFL got zero $$ as they don't own the stadium until 2025.

There are 3 breaks in the middle of the game, you're hardly lacking an opportunity to go shove your face with junk.

Who cares what Doyle thinks. I hope he fails in his bid for a third term. As for the stadium blocking access, there's nothing to see or connect with in Docklands anyway (a ridiculous ferris wheel? Lots of ugly apartment buildings?). It's not the end of the world but you can see it from there.

Not about lazy, it's about not missing the game and still being able to get food/drinks.

I can definitely see the advantages - Especially as last time I was at ethihad I was on the ground floor just far enough back so I couldn't see the bog screen and forced to watch a tiny TV from a considerable distance. But when you combine the fact that there is a greater need to entertain between action and that the team essentially owns the stadium you can see why it has been taken up there before here. Hopefully we move that way but I wouldn't hold my breath.

May be less action but the AFL could still use access to live stats and replays, especially since the highly pixellated replays shown on the not very big replay screens are often obscured by gambling ads. Heck because of the action it'd be an even bigger boon to give fans instant access to whatever replays they wanted while still watching the game. Currently you have to wait until a stoppage and hope what you want to see is what is chosen to be replayed. Owner: Jed York, current CEO of the SF 49ers football team and son of it's owners.

"There is no stadium mobile phone app where you can order food/drinks/merch and have it brought to your seat." Geez how lazy are people now. Go watch at home if you need all that nonsense.

George - I like the concept but this statement is telling "one challenge that’s been an issue in the NFL is that the amount of action that takes place in a football game only about amounts to about 15 minutes." if might be better suited to cricket than AFL. Also who owns Levi Stadium?

Not when some of those trains are still diesel powered.

Read this if you want to see the future of stadium tech: http://time.com/3136272/levis-stadium-tech/ Earlier this year I also notice my NY Rangers (ice hockey) mobile app has a feature that automatically detects when you are in MSG (their home arena) and will allow you to place food/drink/merch orders and have it delivered to your seats.

"There is no stadium mobile phone app where you can order food/drinks/merch and have it brought to your seat" Interesting idea - I assume it is the norm in the US? I went to the 2003 Cricket World cup in South Africa and they had teenagers with Beer dispensers on their backs pouring at your seat.

Interesting ploy Sir Tony - AFL sells off the land and pockets a tidy profit then gets the federal and State govt's to shell out to build them another stadium - govt's are suckers for stadiums - just look at Utopia!

It will be all apartment blocks and tower blocks by 2030. There are plans lying around the AFL HQ as we speak for this. It will make the AFL completely debt free selling off the land. We do not know if there will be enough teams in Melbourne by then to even need that many venues. They would be better off building a new ground out in west Footscray, Nth Carlton or out Sandown Park way. People do not live in the city centres anymore.

If the roof was closed 100% of the time, orientation wouldn't matter but it isn't and does. Etihad has to have a roof because the orientation is wrong, but I don't think AFL should be played in domed stadiums (not unless we're gonna dome them all). A single domed stadium is an unnecessary oddity.

I think Etihad is a better ground (as far as viewing angles go) to watch a game of footy than the MCG is. I have two issues with Eithad. First, it is completely devoid of personality. It's just one hulking blob on concrete and steel. Architecturally its boring and unremarkable outside it blandness. Two, technologically its a dinosaur (but then so are all the Aussie stadiums I have experienced personally). The replay TV's are too small, too dated. There is no stadium mobile phone app where you can order food/drinks/merch and have it brought to your seat. Lucky if you get mobile internet signal let alone the free NBN wireless all attendees should have access to.
