Is anyone really interested in Green vs Mundine 2?

By Beardan / Roar Guru

Does anyone really want to see Danny Green fight Anthony Mundine again? In 2006 the Green versus Mundine fight generated huge interest, and Mundine proved to be too good on the night. However 10 years ago these two were at their peak. Now they are both past their best.

Since that fight Green has retired and come back more often than John Farnham. He had epiphanies in the shower telling him to retire, only to come back. His latest retirement also ended with a comeback after three years. He is now 42 years of age.

Mundine was just about at his peak when he beat Green. He is a natural athlete who also has a healthy lifestyle, however it would take him a few blows to knock-out all of the candles on his next birthday cake.

Both fighters have had highlights in their careers, and both have been world champions.

Green’s knockout of Roy Jones Jr, although a bit comical, was one he can tell his grandkids.

However upon reflection, Green’s career never really recovered from his first loss, a disqualification against Marcus Beyer. Green had knocked Beyer almost into the middle of next week, however he didn’t use his head to finish the fight, which resulted in him using his head a little too much; a disqualification the result.

He wasn’t the same boxer after. When he fought Beyer two years later, he was outclassed – as he was when he later fought Mundine.

Mundine’s wins over an uninspiring Antwun Echols and later against the undefeated Sergey Rabchenko are highlights. However, his American dream never quite materialised, despite spending a good part of the last 15 years trying to break into the market.

Danny Green may feel he has an old score to settle. Maybe it bugs him a bit, or a whole lot. But boxers with little more to offer the boxing world may be best to leave it at that.

Are people interested in Greene versus Mundine part two? Not me.

All that would show that Ottke was not that good if a fighter

He was bashing Ottke before he caught one on temple. Ottke retired undefeated a unified champ with 22 world title fight wins the IBF fighter of the year in 2003, and Mundine was schooling him, well ahead on points until a single blow ended it. In just his 11th fight, lucky for boxing, imagine if a blow-in from rugby league with just 10 fights beat an established world champ like Ottke.

Then you should watch his fighs against hatley, clottey or Sven Okke all three he cops a bashing. As for the rematch this (if it's happens) will be the last time that either man will fight. I agree that it is way overdue and the fact that mundine just lost his title and green pulled out of his fight due to injury it does not look good for either man. But bugger it just let them fight at eighty kilos and enjoy them slap each other around the ring for about five rounds before they both fall apart

This fight is purely a cash grab. Waste of time. If Danny or Mundine were legit contenders at whatever weight the fight was taking place, it would have some merit. But if this is a catchweight above light heavy, it is ridiculous. If they are fighting at light heavyweight, like KingKongBundy's post, they should have fought when Danny held the WBA belt.

Yes Bundy I watched that fight at the Smithfield RSL and poor Danny Green was in Disneyland he was so exhausted and thought he'd lost the fight. I think that Beyer DQ had a bit to do with that fight. I think he just tried too hard after the Beyer loss, and he tried too hard against Sullivan. He beat Sullivan fair and square but knocked himself about during that fight. But up until the first Beyer fight Green was a real machine. I think hammering him on foreign soil and then basically stuffing up with the headbutts really hurt Green. Next time Beyer got him he was ready. He looked fitter and sharper then the first time where he was a mess and saved by Greens, shall we say, carelessness. Or stupidity.

Beardan you say Green wasn't the same after the first Beyer fight? I disagree. In his next fight he flogged Eric Lucas to get the interim belt, in the 6th round Lucas quit .The turning point was when Green fought Sean Sullivan in Perth in 04 it was a stinking hot day and Green got badly dehydrated and nearly fried his brain he won convincingly on points but was completely out of it buy the time the fight was over.I was there and I never forget him saying on the microphone afterwards how he,d let everyone down and even apologised to his little daughter,he was convinced he just got knocked out that's how bad he was ,the doctor said he had never seen a person dehydrated so badly and he was lucky to be alive.Danny green has never been the same fighter since then! As for being interested in this rematch look id be lying if I said I wouldn't go down the pub and watch it but It wont mean anything it should have happened in 07 or 08 but Green makes out that Mundine is to blame for it not happening but he,s the one that retired in 08 when he had the WBA light heavyweight belt its a fact that Mundines goal was to become a 2 weight champ and wanted that Green fight but Green ran away, then Mundine was fighting at middleweight when green came back at a 82 kilo catchweight so Mundine is hardly to blame people forget that.Anyway if Green cant get down to light heavyweight and sign a contract saying that he cant come into the ring over say 82 kilo then this rematch shouldn't take place It would be too unfair.

Nor I. It would do more harm to boxing (which locally has now been dropped by Foxtel) than good. These two blokes have had more than a fair run with the media. Its now (well) overdue to focus on some up and coming talent that is going somewhere (ie Jeff Horne).
