FFA open to banned fan appeals

By News / Wire

Football Federation Australia has hit back at the suggestion it doesn’t offer an appeals process to banned A-League fans, inviting aggrieved supporters to prove their innocence.

The issue has been in the spotlight since a News Corp Australia report last Sunday which named 198 supporters that have been handed bans from attending the sport.

Active fan groups from the Western Sydney Wanderers and Melbourne Victory have pledged to walk out from their matches this weekend to protest what they say is a breach of privacy and an unfair policy.

But FFA says it has always provided an avenue of appeal for unfairly maligned fans, requiring them to work with their club to show they have done nothing wrong.

“FFA does not ban spectators lightly but, like any host venue including sporting stadiums and hotels, will refuse entry to persons where we are not satisfied that they will respect the safety and enjoyment of other patrons,” an FFA statement issued on Thursday afternoon said.

“It has always been the case that if a banned person can prove that they did not engage in the relevant behaviour the ban will not apply.

“If a banned person can bring the evidence that proves this to FFA through their club, the ban will be lifted.”

Sorry that's not good enough! In this country we are innocent until proven guilty. I should not be required to prove my innocence. If Mr Gallop wants more power over spectators, he still needs to abide by the standards of our society. Set up a tribunal, have offenders appear before the tribunal, with representation if desired. I can accept that if an offender declines to appear, that would be perceived as a guilty plea and the consequences follow. But banning people without any right to put their side of the story is UnAustralian and NOT acceptable Mr Gallop. Costs involved, yeah sure there are, but that's the costs of doing business. Not negotiable, just the minimum standard expected by people in this country. Our forefathers fought for this expectation.

Mate you're totally entitled to rant! I also understand your concerns and apologize if I appear dismissive about them at all. Football is in a great position. We don't need to be tearing ourselves apart. I get that. We've got a long history of incompetence. Can only speak for myself but I like many others don't want to see that incompetence continue. I can only assure you that these decisions to boycott or walk out aren't kneejerk, they are the result of many issues and much discussion by people who devote hours weekly to football, they aren't taken lightly, and they are taken to make sure the governing body doesn't mess things up as well. As well You only have to look at victory and their membership to see that active groups taking action to get things changed to allow them to function better don't necessarily harm things long term.

I'm sorry. I don't mean to rant. But I know I do. I went through the NSL meltdown as a player, administrator, junior coach. It wasn't nice. Anytime you think "your issue" is bigger than the team, the administration, the sport itself. Stop. It isn't. We've been there before and we failed. I heard Brisbane Roar fans talking about a "boycott" to bring the bakries to their knees. Wrong. It would bring the club and the sport to its knees. Your walkout, less severe admittedly, but it's the same thing on a smaller scale. Dont hurt the sport, find a smarter way. Otherwise you'll hit 60 like me and think "why isn't this working?" ... it only works if we all pull together even when we think some people are pulling in the wrong direction. Calm down everyone. What's best for the sport is the key, we missed the boat in the 90s when everyone else accelerated into professionalism, we're back in the game folks let's not blow it over egos. We did that once before.

I am glad theyve said there is a change Paul don't get me wrong. There's still a couple of other matters to be dealt with. The Cove were not fully convinced by their meeting either. They didn't get answers to a lot of their questions and it remains to be seen if appeals will actually be dealt with or just "considered". they have their approach. It has Resulted in the past in some good things for them but not others... and when push comes to shove they've had things happen unfairly to them anyway.... As kaks has been saying to you in the other thread, the rbb have had meetings in the past. I presume the nt have a a well. They have contained empty general statements similar to this with vague promises insistence on never getting it wrong. .... and there's been no change. I fail also to see how 5% of fans walking out due to their concerns us really affecting yours or anyone else's enjoyment.

I'm sorry, I just love this sport and I know others do to who hold differing views. I've been through the NSL meltdown and some people want to see us go there again. When we are attacked as a sport we must unite, Gallop may be an idiot but he's our idiot, so let's not let others drag us in to a civil war. Sorry if I've offended any fellow football supporters with my rants. Didn't mean to.

And note it was The Cove who got change through and at least one of their supporters that successfully appealed. So are you walking out this weekend or not? And if you are walking out presumably you'll keep walking out EVERY weekend because of what was said in the past because that ain't ever changing! Thank goodness there is some common sense in at least some of the active support groups.

But I thought you were protesting for change? Change has happened, as of today everyone can appeal ... past, present, and future offenders. You can't have it both ways, this is a victory for the Cove, common sense, and for football fans. It's time to look at how the RBB and North Terrace spent the last couple of days and how those who wanted to make things better soent the last couple of days. One group spent time plotting self-centred walk outs, the other spent time working out how to make things better .... and succeeded. The RBB and the North Terrace have been humiliated and shown up for what they really are!

Yes it has, yes it has. And Football is about people playing football, and people supporting them. Not about protests for the sake of protest! You are just protesting now for the sake of it, please just go. Leave this sport to people who want to play it and people who want to support it. Go, just go and leave us alone for the sake of this sport!

Two have already successfully appealed: http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/at-least-two-aleague-fans-have-successfully-appealed-against-bans-imposed-by-ffa/news-story/0a784e3393f49cc225daf9aad368c402

This isn't even close to what we want. Nor is this a change. The statement clearly says that this is something which has always been in place. Good on all the supporter groups for standing up for fans. But nothing has changed. Nothing has been achieved.

Soooooo .....? The FFA have moved on and: (1) there is now an appeal process in place which involves the clubs (2) they are open to all 198 appealing their bans Given the "grubs" comment I would have thought (or at least hoped) that the words of certain sections of the security community would be treated with less weight if not backed up by other independent witnesses and/or cctv footage. It's a good change which is what we all wanted right? Or is it now all about stamping feet loudly and throwing toys out of the cot on the way out of the stadium? The Cove are coming out of this looking real good imo, starting with an initial balanced response, organising a meeting, arranging follow up meetings ..... It's not in my nature to respect Smurfs, but you know what RESPECT TO THE COVE
