David Gallop asks football fans for positivity

By The Roar / Editor

Football Federation Australia’s relationship with fans of the game in this country is at a crossroad, and CEO David Gallop has called for positivity from the faithful in a press conference today.

In a statement that addressed everything from the infamous leaked list of those who’ve been banned from attending A-League matches, to how the game responds to the current divide between the administration and some fans, to recourse for the banned, Gallop urged the community to come together.

Gallop was adamant banning troublesome fans was the right move, but again condemned the publication of the list leaked to News Corp journalists.

“We have a zero tolerance policy for anti-social behaviour at A-League matches,” he said.

“We want the vast majority to go along [to the games] safely.

“The leaking and publication of a highly sensitive and confidential document was wrong and we continue to look into how that happened.”

He then appealed to fans to use their energy to bring a resolution to the ongoing issues between supporter groups, who feel alienated by the administration.

“To the fans, use your energy in a positive way… Let’s celebrate that wonderful atmosphere.”

Gallop said there would be recourse for banned fans, and that the FFA were open to letting them back into the game.

“We have got meetings with fan groups and also the police. We always look for an appropriate security plan.

“We are constantly in contact with active supporter groups, planning with them for upcoming games.

“We don’t make these decisions without clear evidence. The confidentiality of that is very important in getting the perpetrators.

“If you’ve been banned and you want to reduce the length of that ban, we would be open to a [community service] system.

“The appeals process needs some fine tuning.

“If there’s proof that you did not engage in anti-social behaviour, then of course the ban will be overturned.

“There’s always been the ability that if you’ve got clear evidence a mistake has been made, we’ll look at it.

“The fundamentals of this appeals process haven’t changed.”

Addressing recent walkouts at A-League games, Gallop said the fans should continue their approach of creating atmosphere at games.

“[Walkouts] would be disappointing to all of us, including the 11 guys on the pitch you are supporting.

“You provide a wonderful atmosphere. Do it in a positive way. Help us grow the game.

“We wish the number of banned people to be zero.”

I can't disagree with him on that one. I go to A-League games to support Melbourne Victory because my country of origin is Victoria.

it's a funny thing isn't it. The same thing used to happen to Alice Cooper when they were first starting out in the /early 70s. People would pay to go see Alice Cooper so they could walk out on them. Strange!

Not really, it seems to be a crystallisation of the differences between the dedicated football fraternity and the legacy mainstream media In terms of the bigger picture, as a phenomenon none of this is surprising and it is a symptom of Football moving decisively into the Australian mainstream as a majority sport, there is going to be pushback against this and this is part of the form it takes

oh wow you have always been keenly behind Gallop For my part De Bohuns position long term is tricky given how he has so publicly contradicted himself which will be hard to live down Cove demands for Gallop and Steven Lowy is a bit OTT Hatamoto really need to be replaced though, this is larger than just "fine-tuning" the appeals process, the entire premise of their security approach is flawed

Well the News Limited hatchets want to show whose 'boss' . In todays Rag 5 pages including all back page of their beloved form of footy...even though its NRL off season.. followed by a feel good 1/2 page on AFL...featuring some smiling young clean cut GWS recruits ... whose toe one can say has been stepped on by the Wanderers success. Football.. ...1/2 muted page buried 10 pages from back. all coincidence ofcourse. . .and I wonder if it will be 'coincidence' as footy fan pictures appear...happy family dad, mum and cutesy kiddies with scarfs and footy jerseys kicking ball ...all love their footy ....but only NRL/AFL ...'our' footy. ...and in contrast....will we be seeing shady images of angry young men,, dark, threatening, sinister looking. Oh..thats right ...those are the 'sockah thugs' ..Ofcourse. The disgusting Rebecca 'sockah Wanderers front page hack job Iwas maybe no coincidence. I feel this could be beginning of a strategy led by Newscorp.... the 'Muslimisation' of football and football fans. where the 'All muslims are terrosirists' has shamefully been promulgated by australias commercial media led by news limited to become mainstream we are now witnessing same disgusting tactics to cement perception and 'confirm' the media created narrative 'All sockah supporters are thugs etc ' ..which is now disgustingly morphing into the realms of utter hysteria and lunacy 'soccer terrosirists etc ' Where every football hating xenophobic grub from commercial media and others ...etc Jones, Wilson, Newman, O'Brien, Steve Price, NSW Police commsioners, etc each reeking with ignorance, agendas and vested interests will be allowed to vent their ..ahem 'opinions' on the soccer and tapping into the 'Us and THEM' ..." THEY are not like US ' narrative. This is News Limited ...when it comes to exercising their power and influence and advancing their NRL/AFL commercial interests you cant put anything beyond them....

Here is one of the great modern philosophers Sam Newman's take on things .. Newman on the A League : “I’ve got a feeling in soccer that crowds support their country of origin and use the sport as a vehicle to promote their ethnicity.” .. What would Gallop know about Football. He wasent the kid who was made to feel something less than human for playing and watching football. But apparently us "soccer" fans get very defensive, heard it called "little man syndrome" on SA radio. What the hell would they know, I knew it as Football but the racists knew it as wogball. All those media who never had to live that life see Football fans as the problem. AND they (the media) still dont get it. The walk out are to support a basic human, democratic right to APPEAL and know what you have been charged of inorder to APPEAL. That was one of the many reasons the Allies in 1944 invaded Europe on D-Day. These pre-historic jornos, so called, make me angry, sad and deflated. Australia in 2015 and we are still outsiders, un Australian blah blah. I worry for my son. As he does not have a surname that would fit into the Australian Cricket team. It would however fit into the Australian Football team, but apparently that would make him a terrorist.

To be fair it does seem to be morphing into a myriad of other topics, eg the bans and appeals process is morphing into the nature of police deployment and so it has become connected to the issues surrounding the Liberal Democratic senators war or words with NSW police officials http://thenewdaily.com.au/sport/2015/11/04/football-fans-police-senator-feud-spat-turns-sour/ and this week http://outside90.com/ugly-truth-behind-a-league-policing-812/ http://www.fourfourtwo.com/au/news/opinion-kicking-stink#:RffvrfLsE8Rg-A And then there was Lucy Zelic pretty much covering each stakeholders grievance and then calling for De Bohuns head http://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/blog/2015/11/30/de-bohun-must-go-league-fans-find-their-collective-voice-0 There's a lot of dissatisfaction with the FFA from a lot of quarters, and the meek response to an outright aggressive and slanderous attack seems to have been the last straw

"Personally I would rather each code go over the top in banning people rather than going to soft as peoples safety is at risk" In the spirit of discussion, I will point out that in football at least proportionality is of absolute importance, going in "too hard" often is the actual cause of disorder escalating and as such "puts peoples safety at risk" and is problematic as being too soft and leaving a vacuum

Actually it's perhaps precisely because of this idea of reaching the "wider audience" that we are having the problems we are having, as they are ostracising the already committed fans in order to do so by pandering to the media where Wilsons points are quite obviously from an NRL tragic making an attempt to slander the culture as being "sick from within" which isn't actually the case, but hey, attack the sport you fear most in terms of the aspect that provides it with a point of difference There's a trend developing where the Football fraternity focuses more and more on the A-League and not so much the Socceroos (so-called Club >>> Country mentality which isn't uncommon) There's an opportunity there then to embrace marketing the Socceroos to the general public and general sports fans but at the same time understand that the A-League consists predominantly of the dedicated football fraternity who follow the sport closely on a week to week basis

Yeah I wasn't expecting much but it has got to the point where surprisingly the media have come out very critical, eg 442 and over at SBS Lucy Zelic wrote a good article and then called for De Bohuns head Seems like every stakeholder is rather irritated atm at the FFA for one reason or another and this has dredged it up Not reallly expecting much, as anything substantial will require a pretty big organisational shift in attitude from the FFA but given they are only really interested in parachuting Lowy's son in + some others sounds like it will be business as usual and they'll just allow this to quiet down

You're kidding? Steve Price? His opinions are as intelligent as Rebecca Wilson and Rita Panahi and, like them, he's another ethnic-hating nut.

For my part they have to change security consultants, the current ones have no football experience prior to working with the FFA and their credentials are in counter terrorism This basically dictates the entire tone of the fan/FFA relationship so it is rather hypocritical to ask for positivity while their choice of advisors reflects what they really think of fans

Here's another story showing where ACTIVE SUPPORT are losing the media; if you're going to do this you - and not the FFA - are going to have to get your story across because the FFA have done damage and now you are. Damn, I only just saw a replay of his press conference. How embarrassing, he could barely get his words out. I thought he was going to break-down at one stage and cry. Three months tops before he gets thrown off the same balcony Dave Smith was.

@Albi Mangler Everytime a football fan gets evicted they receive a ban notice. If the same standards applied to all the other mainstream sports they would have banning lists a mile long. The fact is more people get evicted from NRL, AFL and cricket matches and yet football is the one with the problems.

No mention of ripping flares or entering field of play in that article, I would think a high percentage of the banned are for this reason.
