WATCH: Player gets straight red card for awful rugby tackle

By The Roar / Editor

New Zealand’s Isaac Te Tamaki knew straight away he was in trouble with the referee after a shocking tackle in the rugby sevens tournament in South Africa.

Scores were locked at 19-all in extra time of the Quarter-Final between New Zealand and Argentina when Te Tamaki lifted Franco Sabato and dumped him on his head.

The Argentinian could have been seriously injured in the tackle leaving the referee with no choice but to send Te Temaki straight from the ground.

With the extra man advantage Argentina went on to win the game. They eventually lost to South Africa in the final.

Sorry I didn't reply until now. Is it a soccer ground? Yes but it wasn't supposed to be exclusively so. For then 2010 FIFA WC we built all these great stadiums that enriched lots of companies. The stadiums were over the top for our needs. In Cape Town the stadium was built on prime land rather than cheaper land outside the city because FIFA wanted the Table Mountain and ocean backdrops The flip side is they are world class with two problems... - corporate suites are wholly inadequate for rugby -this was a planning mistake caused by the reluctance of WP Rugby to engage back then and the time constraints imposed by the building program - the local side (WP/Stormers) own their own run down stadium (Newlands) and the costs make it impractical to move unless the City consents to a better deal. Now to your problem (you wondered if I would get there) - Yes the dead ball areas were short - however the problem is resolvable. There is space on both ends to make a bigger dead ball area. It would require some spending and that spending won't happen until WP Rugby agrees to a deal Having said that - the overall viewing experience is magnificent. - entrance and exit is quick and easy - Beers and food easy to get. Newlands is about a 100 years old (with many upgrades) and doesn't meet any of those criteria. The atmosphere is good but it is good at the CT Stadium. It is a matter of time before the move happens but it is a waiting game.

Halai and Heem left the sevens as they moved into super rugby.

Which is really where SBW is supposed to thrive. What he doesn't beat he should offload on so there should be some tactical changes around their setup with a lot of work coming off SBW before even needing to go wide. If they use him well they could really open up elsewhere.

it was not a spear as such. the guy got excited and went to hammer the argie and got into a real bad position. then being a rookie, he realized the guy was in the air and let him go like a hot potato. to his credit, the argie did well to land and not make a meal out of the whole thing. such tackles are rare in 7s. unlike in the xvs u have 2 objectives - to stop the guy and also stop the ball being offloaded if possible. it is more like in league, becoz quick offloads will give attacking team enuf space to run in.

@ Dave Baker : so this is not a rugger ground , i mean it is a footy ground? i was thinking the goal area was smaller , especially when the fijian went out against the french scoring the try on the deadball line , thus eliminating fiji from the main event.

i know that BUT my question is why they left the 7s team. if u look at their seasoned campaigners like DJF Curry Curtis Kaka Raikabula Cama Mikkelson O'Donnel .... theyve been with the team for ages. Halai and Heem were also main guys and most importantly the gas with size - they are really big units. Now the NZ team does not have pace and power in the backs. Maybe Ben lam will come in and who knows , SBW will live upto the hype.

Agree with the sentiment and the player always has responsibility for the player who he tackles. Just from my viewing of it there looked to be mitigating factors. You are correct It was a lucky landing. However if a player has no real history of illegal play and from my viewing of it he was showing genuine remorse from the get go he deserves a pass. Still suspend him and make it meaningful but don't judge him from this isolated incident. Someone luke Dylan Hartley for example should just get life and save everyone the trouble.

Brisbane Boy, it's not a question of how we treat the offender, it's a question of how we irradiate this level of avoidable danger. It was a lucky landing, but if it was my boy being tackled I'd be asking questions about how a player can get to that level of international professionalism with a spear tackle in his repertoire? 'Oh it was just a brain fade' is no consolation to ex-players in wheelchairs.

I would give him a pass as he is a very young player he should take his medicine and move on. It was a poor tackle late in the second day of a sevens tournamen Fatigue would have been a factor. He got him in a poor position and did not drive him. If he did a similar tackle later in his career it is a different story. for clarity I am a Aus fan so I am in no way an apologist for all things NZ

He was shown the red card but was not looking at the referee at the time. He had already started running from the field assuming it would be a yellow card I guess.

I attended both days. On Day 2 my seats were 5 rows back right near where the incident happened I haven't seen the footage but I don't think the ref even showed him red. He just pointed angrily at the dressing room. Tamale sat in the sin bon and looked to be crying. About 5 minutes later an official had to tell him to get off. The tournament was superbly organised. Great stadium - Because it was Sevens we didn't have to use our ancient rugby stadium I loved it and will be back next year

they had 7 fit guys against USA then Stoers broke a hand and Pulu was sent to the bin. for one play they only had 5 on the park and they finished with just 6. Against argies in capetown they had 9 fit guys and then one guy got a red ( so he was no longer in the scene) and DJF got a bad head injury and was off. for some reason NZ have suffered a spate of injuries in these two legs, unlike any other team in the circuit. couple that with thier inexperience (6 guys with one cap or less) they were damn good to go so far. am not sure why seasoned campaigners like Frank Halai Bryce Heem Lote Raikabula are missing. during their unbeaten or dominating runs, NZ 7s team was more or less set with a few changes here and there. now almost all the names apart from DJF and Curtis and WEbber are new.....

Well it's a good time to be experiencing losses regardless of why. With Pulu, Messam, SBW and the Ioane brothers to get involved more things should get better on some front but the injuries are bizarre. In Dubai they only had six non injured players by the last match or something like that.

Te Tamaki was suspended for eight games but will be available for the Wellington tournament because the suspension can be served in domestic tournaments.
