After losing in the preliminary finals two years in a row, unable to take advantage of their minor premiership victories, the Sydney Roosters will be determined to take home the Provan-Summons Trophy in 2016.
Trent Robinson has strengthened his side by recruiting England international Joe Burgess, as well as rising stars Ryan Matterson and Jayden Nikorima.
With NYC graduate Latrell Mitchell also joining the NRL side, the Roosters have a dream roster.
Although James Maloney and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck have left the club, so 2016 will be the beginning of a new era at Bondi, with rookie sensation Jackson Hastings finally set to step up and play in the starting side full-time.
Rookie watch
No surprises here, Mitchell is set to make a splash in 2016, with the winger sure to get a run during the Origin period or even sooner if a player in the backline becomes injured.
Mitchell has been a standout in the Roosters under-20s, crossing for 16 tries and converting kicks at a rate of 67 per cent in 26 games over two seasons.
If the Roosters’ NRL backline fails to fire, they will be shifted in favour of the Taree Red Rovers junior.
Under pressure
While he sits ahead of Brendan Elliot and Mitchell in the Chooks’ pecking order, with so many talented backs at Bondi, Blake Ferguson faces serious pressure to perform.
Ferguson will also be playing for his future, with the former NSW Blues centre off contract at the end of 2016 – and if the Roosters are to sign Sonny Bill Williams for 20117, they need to make salary-cap space.
Ferguson will also be gunning for a return to State of Origin, with both Will Hopoate and Daniel Tupou expected to miss out in 2016 as Laurie Daley flags the start of a new era.
Who will wear the Roosters’ number 1 jersey?
It appears increasingly likely that Ferguson will start at fullback come Round 1. However, one wrong move could see him dropped and replaced by Mitchell, Nikorima, Elliot or Omar Slaimankhel.
Ferguson has been training in the position over the past few weeks, with Mitchell the favourite to take over during Origin. However, Slaimankhel is also tipped for big things.
The number 1 jersey appears to be in great hands with plenty of depth and talent ready to go should a replacement for Ferguson be needed.
Can Jackson Hastings steer the Roosters toward a premiership?
Hastings is a star of the future and the man to fill the five-eighth role Maloney left vacant upon leaving for Cronulla at the end of 2015.
Hastings performed extremely well during the backend of 2015 and, at only 19 years of age, he is set to get even better. A full season starting in the NRL will help.
He is the best man for the job and if the Roosters happen to win the premiership, Hastings is sure to be a major part of that triumph.
Will Joe Burgess prove a success or a failure?
The NRL has received plenty of English imports over the past few years – some are rated among the game’s best while others failed to reach their potential.
Traditionally English backs have failed, with Ellery Hanley being the only player of note to have succeeded on Australian shores. Sam Tomkins and Ben Crooks arrived with big things expected of them, but both could not emulate their Super League form Down Under.
Robinson will be hoping former Wigan winger Joe Burgess can end the curse and become a household name in Australia.
Burgess is already regarded as one of the best wingers in England at just 21. He has won a Super League grand final, represented England in three Tests, and played in the 2014 World Club Challenge against his new team.
Burgess is expected to buck the British back trend and show Australians and New Zealanders just how good he is.
Can the Roosters claim a fourth consecutive minor premiership and qualify for the grand final?
The Roosters will once again be a heavy premiership contender and could again take out the J.J. Giltinan Shield. However, 2016 will be their toughest season yet as they face contention from the likes of the Brisbane Broncos, New Zealand Warriors, Cronulla Sharks and more.
Robinson has the roster to deliver a premiership, but can he get his men to sustain their form during the Origin period when stars Michael Jennings, Mitchell Pearce, Boyd Cordner and Aidan Guerra will be out, possibly along with Blake Ferguson, Daniel Tupou, Jake Friend, Dylan Napa and Kane Evans?

The traditional rivalry between Eastern Suburbs and South Sydney will continue in Round 1.
It will be Sam Burgess’ first game in the cardinal and myrtle since ending the Rabbitohs’ premiership drought in 2014.

Roger Tuivasa-Sheck will play his old club for the first time when the Roosters host the Warriors.
Tuivasa-Sheck will be joined by fellow Kiwi superstars Shaun Johnson, Issac Luke, Manu Vatuvei, Simon Mannering and more, in a clash of two premiership contenders.
It could come at a time when the Warriors will be under pressure to perform to keep coach Andrew McFadden at the helm of the Auckland-based club.
The game poses many interesting match-ups, such as Mitchell Pearce versus Shaun Johnson and Jake Friend versus Issac Luke, while the backs and forwards will all be going at each other with Test jumpers on the line.

And if the soccer approach had been taken the Roosters would have won all of them so it just comes down to which other sports rules you arbitrarily apply in retrospect. The fairness thing also suggests that it’s fairer to judge a 24 game season whilst ignoring 90-95%. The NFL has always practically disregarded for and against despite it having a better record as an indicator of quality than wins and losses even in the flawed NFL scheduling.. Neither are truly fair because the schedule is unfair. So it comes down to do you like single day standardised testing or an assessment of a body of work.

Putting the fairness thing to one side. Lets assume the Roosters lost those tie breakers each of those years that means they come 2nd, 2nd and first in the final standings over the last three years. Tell me which team has been more consistently effective in the regular season over those three years given no other team ahs been in the top 4 each year? My NFL comment was based on a fairer way to split teams who have finished on the same amout of points. FOR and AGAINST only really works IF every team plays EVERYBODY TWICE. But they don't. In 2013 The Roosters played all of the bottom 4 teams twice. 8 games, Souths only played 1 of those same teams twice, 5 games. The 3 extra game's gave the Roosters an unfair advantage in the for and against and Won the MINOR Prem. The USA system is fairer as it is based on head to head wins.

Hey Sleiman. I'm not sure it can be said of any other team old mate. Phil Gould uses the expression that the Roosters will quite often give you chance to get back in the game , and quite often they do . Yes they are very successful in recent years but with all the success the silverware hasn't increased accordingly . Having said that the injury to JWH certainly made a huge difference last year and they quite possibly would have progressed further with him fit , but we all know that " what ifs " aren't currency. And to 3 Hats the facts remain that the Roosters were minor prems 3 yrs in a row and to suggest that by using another sporting codes procedures would reduce the success of the Roosters really is a bit silly .

Yes Scott but 2 of those 3 MINORs were ONLY by FOR and AGAINST percentages, In 2013, both Souths and Easts finished on 40 Points, with 1 win apiece in the regular season. The aggregate score was Souths 40 Easts 34, A Massive forward pass in 2013, GF cost Manly the Premiership! Then a late try to Jennings sealed it! But Easts did have the better of Manly in both of the Regular season games and in the Semi. In 2014, both Manly and Easts finished on 36 points, Manly won the 1 game in the regular season, Souths V Easts were 2 to 1 wins to Souths with that Massive thrashing of the Rorters in the Qualifying Final. IF NFL tiebreaking procedures were used then the Roosters would NOT have been Minor Premiers in 2013 OR 2014! It was that close!

That's fair enough. Though, the same could be said of almost every other team too. The Roosters are one of the current powerhouses of the game in Australia and obviously their titles and minor premierships is evidence of that.

Comfortably is a stretch. They had the best roster in terms of depth and overall skill but they weren't at a world beaters/Globetrotters level. Even with JWH id say the Roosters would be pretty much even odds against a healthy Brisbane, Nth QLD, Rabbits and Melbourne. Rabbits if it weren't for so many injuries and apparent player discontent would've been my pick but they never recovered mentally or (in GIs case) physically.

Maloney missed over 100 tackles this year..20% of them in the 2 losses to Cronulla....must've impressed Flanno.. Winning the 'minor' premiership then going straight out the back door is like ordering a steak sandwich and only getting bread and onions. The roosters definitely had the roster to win the comp comfortably last season even without JWH,it was the second successive waste of a good season

While it is still a strong roster, the loss of strike power from Maloney and RTS will make points harder to come by. While in 2013 Robinson had some really clever backline plays and straight running second rowers in attack, that seemed to go missing in 2014 & 2015, and they relied heavily on RTS and Maloney to make things happen. Perhaps it was too tempting to play second man to RTS rather than go to another play but I think they became very one dimensional and other teams figured them out in finals time. This year they won't be favourites which may help them work into the new season and combos. As a fan I'm hoping for top 4, but it is not the expectation with Broncos and Cowboys and a number of other challengers.

Losing James Maloney and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck is a Disaster. James is the best kicker in the game and Roger the best broken field runner. Absolute disaster. Plus they lost SBW the year before. They will not be as good as last year. Their remaining stars are another year older too. So don't back them. They need to relocate to the Central Coast where they have been buying local clubs. They may get a following there.
