Boland and Paris in Australian ODI squad to play India

By The Roar / Editor

Australia have named a 13-man squad for the upcoming ODI series against India, with pacemen Kane Richardson, Joel Paris and Scott Boland all called up.

Boland and Paris could make their ODI debuts as soon as January 12, when the series starts at the WACA.

Some of the big names left out of the squad, while veteran batsmen Shaun Marsh and George Bailey were included.

James Faulkner and Richardson make their return to the squad, Joe Burns, Shane Watson and Usman Khawaja missing out. Nathan Coulter-Nile, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, James Pattinson and John Hastings miss out through injury or have been left out.

The squad covers the first three games of the five-match series – in Perth, Brisbane and Melbourne.

Australian one day international squad to play India: Steve Smith (capt), David Warner (vc), George Bailey, Scott Boland, Josh Hazlewood, James Faulkner, Aaron Finch, Mitch Marsh, Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Kane Richardson, Joel Paris, Matthew Wade.

Fair enough, perhaps I oversold him with an ODI bowling average of 44. However, his List A bowling average of 27 is pretty good and he is certainly better credentialed than Boland. I think finding out about one youngster at a time is prudent- we have Paris in the squad- lets not have two newbies at once.

It does mean that he's the closest of any keeper to having actual One Day International form.

Incumbent...cool word, means very little as an argument. It just means that he was in the last side. Hardly a valid reason for selection now.

How many seasons of Matador do you think there have been, Andy?

Hastings isn't proven in one day cricket. You don't pick a front line bowler for an average like his. I don't dislike Hastings, he's a useful cricketer but they'd get more out of finding out about younger bowlers than him at this stage of the season.

Steve Smith was the best last season.

Abbott is over rated and not in form. At least Wade is a proven ODI performer who had a good series against England. I agree with your other points though, especially on Boland. Thanks for providing the stats.

Behenderoff should be there and so shoukd be Khawaja who was the best matador batsman in 2013 and 2014

Khawaja has been the best matador batsman for he last 2 seasons not counting this season as he was injured and just got a 100 In his only bbl game and has 3 tons in 3 test matches so really disappointed not to see him Get a go

I actually think the selectors have done a good job. My only change would be Hastings in for Boland. Hastings is proven at ODI level and has shown form this summer in short form cricket. Boland is average in all forms and shouldnt be anywhere near any Australian team. Lynn and Behrendorff a bit stiff to miss out, but both coming back from injury so OK to leave them to ease back into it with the BBL and then get back to the Shield. Good to see S Marsh and Richardson back in the ODI team, being rewarded for good form this summer. All the incumbents from the last ODI squad vs England deserve to keep their spots as they have shown decent form (Finch, Warner, Smith, Bailey, Maxwell, Wade, M Marsh, Hazlewood). I expect we will see a spinner come in for Hazlewood for the final two ODIs. Hopefully Lyon. It would be good to rest Warner or Smith for the final two matches as well and maybe give Lynn a go.

It's good that they are leaving some players in the BBL, rather thann playing the one dayers. I'd rather see anyone who is in line for a squad spot in the World T20 squad playing BBL.

I'm not leaving Bailey out because of form, I'm leaving him out because he won't be around next World Cup and as he's no longer part of the leadership group, so why not move on from him and try out some new batters. We're constantly looking at young bowlers, but it seems to take a miracle for a young batsman to get a go.

Bailey's made runs in the Big Bash too (gets out just as I type this). I rate Lynn but unless you're picking a 6 or 7, T20 isn't really that relevant to ODIs IMO.

Regardless of his Test ability, Shaun Marsh would walk into any ODI side barring Australia.

Wade is the incumbent and played pretty well in his last ODI series. As much as I am a Tasmania and Paine fan, I think this is a fairly reasonable selection.

I'm confused at what criteria the selectors are looking at picking someone like Scott Boland. His overall FC & List A records are solid but nothing spectacular. Averages 30 in each and concedes 5.2 an over in One Day cricket. This year he has 13 wickets in the shield and in the Matador Cup he took 7 wickets at 37 in 7 games. I was a little surprised by Paris at first but he did take 10 wickets at 22 in the Matador Cup and they probably left Behrendorf out because he has struggled with injury this season (not that it stopped them picking NCN for the Test squad). Paris also played in 2014 and took 13 wickets at 12 so he deserves his spot. It's not his first season as many are suggesting. Richardson deserved his spot as other than Starc was the leading wicket taker in the Matador Cup. I would have thought Hastings, Tye or Abbott would have deserved a run ahead of Boland. I just don't get it. Matt Wade is overated. Pick anyone but him. Chris Lynn is a gun. Thought he would have got a run, but is a must for T20 side. I think within 18 months he will be in the Australian Team in all 3 forms of the game. Has the best FC average (45) of anyone not in the test team. He just needs an injury free summer next year and he'll be ready for all 3 formats.

I'm going to stick up for you here Don, not that you need it. Paris showed enough in the shield to confirm that he is back in the form that had him dominate last year's Matador, Dorf only just back from injury or he'd be ahead. Lynn also only JUST back from injury. Klinger should make all 3 squads (even if they can't fit him into an XI)

Yeah the only logical reason to leave out Dorf is to get mroe miles in his freshly mended body.

Behind one S Marsh...top form in OD, T20 and Tests. Chris Lynn might be a good 7th. Khawaja, Smith, Klinger...

Did you also notice that, apart from those 2 BBL games Paris regularly takes first over wickets? It is never a winning argument to claim that he is not much good when reality says he is.
