Central Coast hope they’ve regained the A-League’s respect as coach Tony Walmsley revealed the depth of their financial strain.
The Mariners backed up a drought-breaking win over Wellington Phoenix with a stunning first-half display against Melbourne Victory on Friday night.
While their 3-0 lead was reeled in by the A-League champions, Walmsley could sideline his emotions from a rollercoaster match and see merit in the hard-earned point.
“We’ve kept a steeliness about how we’re going about our business,” he said.
“It’s for other people to say whether we’ve gained more respect over the last two weeks but I’m incredibly proud of what the team’s delivered.”
The likeable coach said the result should be considered in the context of a dramatic week for the club.
Irish striker Roy O’Donovan was served an eight-week ban for a headbutt and creative star Anthony Caceres is poised to leave the club for English Premier League giants Manchester City.
Walmsley said the nature of the club’s financial position meant every player at the club wears a ‘for sale’ sign.
“The club has built its foundations on development of youth and sale of youth … when that presents itself, with the financial restraints we’ve got we have to go with it,” he said.
“We’re spending $1.2 million less (than last year) … we’re spending the floor of the (salary) cap.
“I’m embracing the challenge with working with players at the floor of the cap until we can make the club sustainable.”
That doesn’t mean there won’t be incomings.
Walmsley said the club was “in discussion” with a number of potential international recruits and hoped to sign an Australian striker this week with youth-team experience from the English Premier League.
Considering the performances of forwards Mitch Austin and Josh Bingham on Friday night, the new striker might face a battle for game-time.
Unless, of course, the forward pair was also sold after their goal and assist each against Victory.
“They’d need to be big offers,” Walmsley laughed.

How does that help a club to exist on its own merits..? Selling off home fixtures is a nonsense---if they can't draw a crowd on their own home ground they are not a football club. At least the Nix are a NZ club and sharing venues there is a different story. CCM are just down the road from the Jets and should be made into one club.

"Massively under achieving"... Nonsense, if there was no SFC I don't think there would be a HAL---can you say that about CCM? If CCM were to disappear no one would notice. Wollongong, should replace them and CCM should amalgamate with the Jets. The Jets need an owner and CCM need supporters. They could share home games to suit their calendars---instead of selling home game fixtures to interstate clubs which make the HAL look like a second rate league and a farce of one.

I don't get your point Punter. An SFC fan questions the place of the CCM. I, a Jets fan, point out that SFC are massive underachievers given their resources. A city of 4 million had 1 team for 6 years, average is only twice that of an area with one 14th the population. People in glass houses.....

"The belief is we will be close to breaking even this year and in profit next year" is sadly something every club says, and rarely achieves - not saying it's not true or won't happen but let's see; I'm not convinced many clubs can achieve sustained profitability without a step change in the commercial model for the HAL itself. And as for the media - you can't and won't get a break, lazy journalism in regards to football in this country is to blame which is unlikely to change in the short term but if we can develop more 'Simon Hills' we have a chance of improving analysis of football on and off the park.

Has there ever been a time in the history of the A-League when SFC was not boring?

Another post made in the same thread and why its important is because we always said 15 years and on cue its starting to happen anyway to the other post. Punter He is called Thattrentboy Or Thetrentboy Most importantly he did not go to league and even important was the Coast has developed the knowledge to see a natural talent with the facilities to then develop a player. As I posted before the CC started well behind everyone else but the belief has always been to develop the best junior development systems so Football can evolve on the CC. Has never been about a quick fix but a slow and steady build and to have faith in the game and the foundations you create. The Trent Boy or as locally said thattrentboy is the start and if you could see the increase in knowledge and technical ability to pre hal you would not believe it possible. We are still a RL heartland but it’s becoming a shared heartland.

Repeat of a post I made yesterday but has relevance with this thread.. Fuss Watch out for the Trent Boy as he is known on the Coast on the weekend… He is just 17 and we have signed him into our first team. He is still at school… Some background on why the Trent Boy is so important… he was born on the Coast to an Australian family started playing Football at 4 years old for Umina …. two years ago he changed schools to the “”” International Football School””” on the Coast and in doing so was trained by excellent coaches at the Football school who have said they added greatly to his skill level on top of his natural ability… He is the player Lyall Gorman said we would produce about now on the Coast when we started our first academy in Hal 2… The Football folk on the Coast who have fort so hard for so many years to get the facilities like the COE and the International Football School up and going on the Coast in a previous heartland RL area. This is hugely exciting a young player fully developed on the Coast by local coaches, and schools… Unlike Western Sydney with many NSL teams and migrants the Coast has had to do it from scratch with many within the Football community questioning why we should even be in the competition.. He is a striker and still at school and arrangements are in place re his education… He is very fast and is said to have an eye for goal… It has always be a 15 year plan on the Coast to reach were many other sides were starting re support and basic community knowledge… BTW the Boy in his name is because of his age …. http://www.ccmariners.com.au/article/breaking-news-buhagiar-is-in/22739rjtsknw1adqj4b4a1ob9

The belief is we will be close to breaking even this year and in profit next year .... Big nay huge mega nay massive planning has gone into this ... however getting into the media as a good news Mariner story is like trying to get a good RBB article from the Gin Queen .... The club has gone through a massive management restructure and signed most games with the Gosford for five years at the time... The club has very publicly said what they are trying to do and that need the fans to stay loyal... the essence is if we play entraining Football the belief is the crowds will increase... This decision was made after many forums with members and non members... Our crowds this year are better than the last two when we were higher up the table... we know its a development year and can all see the improvements ... At times you feel like saying to everyone go and get !!!!!! we have done more than any other club by light years more in junior development we could if injuries happen field 8 Socceroos in the first team.. in a 4-2-3-1 system Ryan in goals Sainsbury and Wilko as Centre Backs Defensive Mids.... Jedi and Musty Attacking mids.... Berinne, Rogic, Olly B We have developed a way back to profit and still play entraining football and have been endlessly bashed by many who should know better ... I have lost a huge amount of respect for the PFA under its new management pertaining to some issues they have had with us and ran it all through their media contacts.. However revenge is a dish better severed sweet and by fark this young squad when added to as the missfits have been let go will challenge all teams... The CC has stood behind the team .... We will average close to or over 10K this year more than I think the Nix's, AU and PG as we do most years... Our club managers and coach keep us up to date with whats going on... As our chant has been since Hal 1 Nobody rates us we don't care

The owner of CCM is trying something different - he's going to create a club that develops players for onselling to make profit. It was clearly explained by CCM's coach Tony Walmsley during yesterday's post-match.

Waz I was talking specifically about the Ajax Youth Academy (De Ajax Jeugdopleiding) - it funds itself by hitting the jackpot once every three years with a big transfer deal - I wasn't talking about the Amsterdamsche Football Club Ajax, also known by the nickname of De Joden. In the Australian context, such a hit rate means not just funding the academy, bu the club as a whole - but as the Ajax Academy example tells us - a lot of resources and effort must go into being able to hit the jackpot once every three years.

Mid, fantastic rant and thank you for it; you might though have to explain the opening comment "Not you too" as I feel cyber-tarred with a brush used elsewhere and I may have given you the wrong impression or been misunderstood. First off I have seen the school and the academy and its impressive; as an aside I have met the Backrie reps three times in the past 4 months and have referenced those facilities each time as BRFC are nowhere in developing anything, let alone such an academy. For the good of football all clubs need to have something similar surely! Then I opened my original post stating clearly that I understood the logic and the necessity, and for it to succeed it would need to overcome a couple of challenges - the first being the length of contracts, it's no good CCM developing kids if they then sign for Victory for free (sound familiar?) and secondly they must command higher transfer fees than a few hundred thousand dollars because a club losing a million or two is unlikely to be able to sell 4 or 5 players every season to cover losses. I presume it was my last statement about whether CCM would remain viable that caused the angst; I'm sorry if it did but I do feel it's a reasonable question - right now Charlesworth is bankrolling the club (against a clear strategy, not something I can yet say about the Bakries and Roar or indeed a few other clubs) which is fine, as long as he stays - if he doesn't it doesn't appear there are many buyers for HAL clubs around at the moment if the Jets situation is anything to go by. I hope that clarifies.
