Australia vs India highlights: Second ODI - cricket scores, blog

By Suneer Chowdhary / Roar Guru

Australia will look to hammer in the advantage when they take on India in the second ODI of their five-match series at the Gabba in Brisbane and you can follow live scores and a blog of this second match on Friday from 2:20 pm (AEDT).

The preparation of a typically flat deck at the WACA was followed by Australia chasing down 310 with some ease.

The game did go into the final over of the Australian innings but the result looked done and dusted even before the final 15 overs of the innings came around.

Steve Smith continued from where he had left off against India last summer and George Bailey took advantage of the absence of DRS and three other missed run-out opportunities to hit centuries and help the hosts go 1-0 up.

India had earlier ridden on Rohit Sharma’s brilliant unbeaten 171 to make 3/309 in their 50 overs but it looked like they had fallen around 20-25 runs short of the par score on that WACA road. Sharma and Virat Kohli had been involved in a double-century stand for the second wicket but critics would later blame them for not accelerating early enough.

Unfortunately for India, they are coming off some poor ODI form in 2015 and one of the chief reasons behind it has been the inability to the middle and lower-middle order to get going. That has led to the top-order taking extra responsibility and could have probably led to the late decision to put their foot on the pedal.

That said, the Indian bowling looked equally listless after having reduced Australia to 2/21 and it’s tough to see how they would have defended even 330. Such was Smith and Bailey’s form, it wouldn’t have been easy.

Going into this game, India have bigger selection worries than Australia.

Australia will be without David Warner after he was released on a paternity leave, and Usman Khawaja and Shaun Marsh will be vying for that opening spot. Both have been in good Big Bash League form and Marsh might get the nod having been selected in the squad earlier.

The other change will be a more interesting one – who will replace Mitchell Marsh? Marsh was rested from the side and John Hastings has been added to lend fast bowling support. Kane Richardson is also a part of the squad, so he might get the first nod.

India’s woes stem from the fact they opted to bring only four frontline seamers in the squad.

Mohammad Shami and Ishant Sharma’s injuries before the first ODI forced them into bringing in Bhuvneshwar Kumar to the playing XI which meant he wasn’t even in the country for 48 hours before he had to play a game.

The Indian spinners went for plenty and added to their woes and with captain MS Dhoni not rating Rishi Dhawan as a medium-pace all-rounder anyway, it will be interesting to see what does India do.

There’s a good chance there will be just one change in the line-up – Ishant Sharma will come in for one of the speedsters – but if the surface demands, Dhoni could be tempted into playing a four-pronged seam bowling attack.

With India having won just 10 of the 42 games they have played in Australia, one way or the other, it won’t be easy going for them.

Agree with suneer that bailey should've got the MoM.

India would or should be chasing from now on i suppose.for me today was the right decision to bat although they probably should've chased at perth.and just to have a word on rohit..he's doing justice to his enormous talent unlike in the longer format.

Perhaps my comment's too harsh and i know he has a fine odi average of near 40,but i have had the feel even in the past that he plays for himself a bit whilst in australia colours.

I think australia should give khawaja a go at the top replacing marsh.a guy who gets five or six lives(including run out chances) and still ends up getting only 71 in a odi is having questionable ability at the moment especially compared to usman's magnificent recent form.seems a few guys including lynn, khawaja and travis head are far better than the elder marsh at the moment.

I actually rate Richardson James, and I'm pretty sure he has a better domestic one day record than Behrendorff

In other words, Marsh would be a much better partner than Finch.

Nudge would you expect Behrendorff to be better than any or all of Richardson, Paris or Boland - right now?

Pattinson is a terrible white ball bowler Ronan. Got no idea why so many people think he's so good in those formats. Going to be a gun test bowler though. Also behrendorff has never played for Australia before, so not sure how you could rate him so highly

Yeah true, but they had to go hard to make it back up. If you go slow earlier on you're playing Russian roulette. If the acceleration doesn't work, you have just forced the new guy to score fast as soon as they come in. It worked in the end, but isn't the best method if you ask me.

145 in 25 overs the opener put on James. That is outstanding and the reason we won so convincingly. You just aren't going to lose when your openers start like that

MS Dhoni makes a couple of valid points. India needs more runs. Bowlers bowled a lot of wides, which isn't pardonable because it wasn't as if the ball was swinging too much. Steven Smith is happy to have restricted India to 308 and happy the lower-middle-order isn't getting any batting! Incidentally, and surprisingly, Rohit Sharma gets the man-of-the-match award. Bailey would have been my choice.

This is another clinical chase, which makes it two wins in two games for Australia. The start was slow but after the first drinks break, Aaron Finch smashed a few to lay the foundation. Marsh did his bit before Smith and Bailey got their acts together yet again, for the second time in as many games and guided Australia to an easy win in the end. India don't have too much time to think through what they have to do here. Do they need tactical changes? Personnel changes? Captaincy change? I am not sure, but having watched India play from close, one thing's for sure - the bowlers struggle on surfaces which have nothing for them, whether seamers or spinners.

Another clinical win for Australia. Amazing when you consider it was basically their 3rd string attack - none of their four specialist bowlers today are in the top 6 ODI bowlers in the country - Starc, Hazlewood, NCN, Cummins, Pattinson and Behrendorff all are better options.

That is the end of that, Australia have sealed it off easily. A couple of couples and then Maxwell pulls one over mid-wicket for a four. And then a risky single which seals it off as Jadeja misses a direct hit. Australia go 2-0 up, with Bailey remaining unbeaten on 76 off just 58 balls.

Yes the track record justifies it, but I am backing that Warner will develop into a top notch ODI opener.

Yeah but only because they hit it round for a few overs. They scored 15 in 5 overs at one stage - with no wickets down, under little pressure. They just don't look good enough to rotate the strike and put the pressure back on the bowlers when they aren't scoring boundaries. Finch is 2-speed - hit or block. Marsh still looks out of his class at times - like Finch. Subjective I know.

That's a good Sran over, made to look better by some interesting choice of shots by Maxwell. Just four singles off it. 10 needed off 12 balls.

Barinder Sran has a chance to add to his three wickets from the previous game now. 14 needed off 18.
