Enough is enough, NSW need new Blues blood

By Bonza / Roar Rookie

Yep, it’s January and I’m thinking of State of Origin. Who isn’t?

Cricket let us down badly this summer, its role is to distract us for a few months and the last few months were woeful.

But anyway, I don’t think the NSW Blues are as disgusted as they should be with the Game 3 performance from 2015.

If you’re going to be paid a school teacher’s salary for one game and let Queensland run over you, then there should be massive consequences.

The coach, selectors and captain should at least be made to explain why they should keep their job. They haven’t.

NSW were given a massive carving up in the final Origin match. It should have been the equivalent of Queensland’s 2000 whipping with a Bryan Fletcher hand grenade celebration decorating the cake.

After that hiding, Chris ‘Choppy’ Close apparently informed the Queensland dressing room that it was “Queensland’s darkest hour”.

They didn’t fool around. Coach Mark Murray went out and Wayne Bennett was brought back. The halves pairing changed (although Daniel Wagon and Paul Green were very temporary) and new blood injected with Lote Tuqiri, Kevin Campion and others.

The result? Queensland won the next series.

NSW have failed to blood attacking players and youth with a misguided belief that being tough will win you a series. Sure, the Morris twins, Brett and Josh, Paul Gallen, Greg Bird and company are all hard nuts but Queensland defenders are rarely nervous when they have the ball.

Matt Moylan, James Tedesco, Blake Austin, James Roberts, Blake Ferguson, Nathan Peats and company all deserve a shot. The argument that NSW have no halves is tiresome.

Moylan would be a great five-eighth with Luke Brooks. The point is to make changes for the future and stop clinging on to this ‘let’s restrict Queensland’s points’ mentality.

What happened to the NSW backlines of old?

Bob Fulton and Laurie Daley were legendary players but unless we see an attacking, youthful NSW team this year it’s time for NSW fans to speak up.

This means being vocal on certain radio stations and newspapers that support the current management. NSW fans deserve better and should demand it.

That’s what Queensland did after 2000.

I don’t want to beat Queensland in a series. I want to flog them.

Yep. Partially agree. NSW keep hanging onto the victory of 2014. Let's face fact; QLD were without Cronk and now NSW are without Hayne. Time for a team that sparks fear, not the "this year we may fall over the line". 1. Tedesco (sorry, Dugan is too slow.. Yeah, yeah, yeah .. "Player of the series from NSW".... But still LOST 2. B Morris 3. Roberts 4. J Morris (captain) 5. Mansour 6. Austin 7. Brooks 8. Woods 9. Peats 10. Tamou 11. Cordener 12. Frizel 13. Merrin 14. Thompson 15. Klemmer 16. Scott 17. Moylan

I don't think you can blood Moylan and Brooks in the same series in the halves. Brooks has ordinary defence as is and Moylan is so far untried in the halves. If Moylan starts the year at 6 than he may be a good fit with Adam Reynolds who has the kicking game and control but again is untried at this level. What lost the Blues game one last year was the lack of composure and organisation under pressure and I believe if the same circumstance occured again than Reynolds or Moylan could step up and make the clutch play, something Hodkinson and Pearce were unable to do.

Gal, Bird and Farah must go along with Laurie Daley and Bob Fulton... Too many excuses to why the lose, 9 out of 10 years is not acceptable. One out hit ups and constantly Kicking High balls and not finding grass on the kick wont win you games, especially when the ref barely blows penalties.

I look at that backline and think... your veterans are Dugan, Jennings and Ferguson? The most important role on that team would be legal counsel.

No Gallen , no Bird , no Farrah ? Daley would be so lonely ... There is the 3 I blame the most in recent years and couldn't agree more that NSW have to move on.

Hey Parra I agree with a lot of what you said but I think the biggest issue is the game plan NSW use that dictates their selections. For the past 4 series NSW have selected their side based on the QLD side and picked players with defence and size being the major factor. The blues had Hayne and his attack can't be replaced. With a stack of the quickest and most devasting ball runners in the game it's foolish to not have good link men to take advantage of this. Also Farrah and Gallen have been guilty of as many errors at critical moments as Pearce yet Pearce has born the criticism alone. My side is as follows 1. Tedesco/Moylan 2. Dugan 3. Jennings 4. Ferguson 5. Morris/Trbojevic 6. Sezer 7. A Reynolds 8. Tamou 9. Rein 10. Woods 11. Cordner (c) 12. Jackson 13. Merrin 14. Cook/Peats * 15. Klemmer 16. Tolman/Fifita 17. Trbojevic I picked 2 Virgin hookers to lighten workload and responsiblity and it's a side that will play a fast brand of footy. Keep the game plan for the halves reasonably simple and put emphasis on ball runners providing multiple options. A ball playing FB will be more of a threat to QLD defence than another ball runner would. Dugans done nothing wrong to be bumped to the wing but it's best for the side.

Id be happy with this team. Pearce does seem to be a favourite of the selectors & to his credit, I thought he outplayed Hodkinson last series.

Greg Bird and Luke Lewis won man of match awards in the 5/8 and 1/2 back positions Yet we continued to put halves in there that were not up to standard instead of using them until someone was ready. They are past that now being out of them positions for too long and slower now. In my view there has not been enough work done by the coach and selectors on how we strengthen the team so whoever is chosen will add another dimension to the team. Dugan must be in the centres providing we have a worthy fullback to take his place. Brett Morris will not be out of place there if needed. Once again the crucial point is how the team is designed and the game plan on how to defeat QLD. The Gallen, Bird run ups at every opportunity does not work as it shows their is no game plan in the first place!

Moylan, Morris, Jennings, Dugan, Morris, Mullen, Hodkinson, woods, peats, Gallen, Jackson, graham, fensom. Fifita, Austin, tamou, cordner. Dugan and Moylan should be there but depends on club positions. Farah and Pearce lost us game 1 with poor choices so have to go. Still feel that when fit Mullen is our best half. Is radradra eligible yet? Unfortunately I fear Daley will continue to pick the same players, especially Pearce, and we will continue to get the same results.

So we drop Dugan for an untried fullback even though Dugan played quite well in the first two games last year and replace him with a rookie ? I'm a rooster through and through but I think the big giraffe tupou is out if his depth in origin . It's hard to know who to appoint as captain without being involved but someone other than Gallen is a must.

He was playing fullback and by your analysis of tries then we should pick Nathan Merritt

I'm sorry but I've said it for the past 2 years the team should be something like this Fullback - Moylan or Tedesco Wingers - Brett Morris and Topou Centres - Josh Morris and Jennings Halfs - Reynolds and Reynolds Lock - Gallen 2nd row - Cordner and Jackson Front row - Woods and Tolman Hooker - Peats Bench - Scott Fifita Jack Bird or the other fullback. As for the 4th don't know I can give reason for all my selection This team have youth experince and a great chance to be together for a few years

There is no doubt NSW needs to examine why we are not winning! To say the opposition has the best halves or spine or whatever is not an excuse All teams have their strengths and weaknesses and it is the selectors and the coach has to find what is right for NSW They have not done that with poor selections and poor game plans showing The one thing we do not do is bring in a heap of new players and expect to win We should monitor the team to see where we can strengthen our weaknesses Mitchell Pearce should be the first to go in my humble opinion To start with fresh ideas Paul Gallen should not be the captain

Hmm, 9 tries last year from 16 games. If that's what you consider to be the most eligible winger then we have massive concerns. What would YOU do then to change the losing culture?

Sorry, but Adam Reynolds will be lucky to hold his spot at Souths this year ! The real problem NSW has always had both before and since Joey retired, is that NSW just cannot breed any halves ! QLD can run 3 or 4 sets of halves at Origin level compared to our great options of Pearce or Reynolds ??? The best options NSW have had in recent years is to hope to get by without halves contributing anything but tackle counts. Please ! Either we need a complete overhaul of our junior development programme ( to develop spines !) or get some better scouts up north to pinch the next batch of QLD infants and bring them to Sydney before they lace on a boot !

So you're saying that picking the same core of players that have lost 20 of the last 30 matches, coming off the biggest lost in NSW's history isn't a good thing? Somebody tell Daley, Fulton and the Telegraph

I think Reynolds would be a good idea. But will he be injured again? Sadly I think Daley has his 2016 team picked (I think he might also have is 2017 and 2018 team picked as well) and not much will change his mind.

I think the author has a general point, the selectors do seem overly cautious in introducing some exciting new blood. Some of the logic and examples were a bit loose though, B Moz being case in point. With Hayne gone, only Inglis would be ahead of him as the most dangerous returner in the game. Jackson Bird was supposed to be Greg Bird? Queensland only won 1 series in the next 5 years after 2000 so their response to that isn't necessarily a bulletproof template. Anyway, logic disagreements aside, I agree that if players like Moylan, Tedesco, Roberts & Austin can show some early season form than the selectors should look to get a couple of them into the team. Blooding too many at once would be suicide but pick the ones that can best slot into the team now, probably Austin at 5/8th and Moylan/Tedesco at fullback (depending on Dugan's role).
