New Zealand vs Australia highlights: Australia level series at 1-1

By Caitlin Doyle / Roar Guru

Match result:

Australia have won the second ODI against New Zealand by 4 wickets and head into game 3 at 1-1, with the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy up for grabs in Hamilton.

REPORT: MITCH MARSH DELIVERS ODI WIN

The game looked to be a close one. New Zealand put up a score of 281 with their innings giving Australia a serious chance at victory, but the home side suddenly looked to be in the box seat when they took Steve Smith, George Bailey and Glenn Maxwell for a combined eight runs.

However a partnership of Mitch Marsh (69 not out) and John Hastings (48 not out) proved to be just what Australia needed to close the match out and level the series.

Final score
New Zealand 9/281
Australia 6/283

Match preview:

Australia are looking to recover their pride after a humiliating loss to New Zealand in the opening game of this three-match series. Join The Roar for all the action from 12 midday (AEDT).

This tour was always going to be a test for the Australian side. The first match of this series saw the Aussies cop an absolute hiding, all out within 25 over to lose by 159 runs. Inexperience and lack of exposure to swinging conditions was evident.

The media responded with shock, given how comprehensively Australia won the most recent Test series. Selections were blamed, namely the omission of Usman Khawaja, as the primary reason for the loss. But blaming selectors is easy, the truth is Australia had a good batting line-up that just couldn’t handle the conditions.

A public dispute between George Bailey and David Warner has emerged regarding Warner’s failure to review his LBW decision. Irrespective of what actually happened, both players should have kept their mouths shut; hopefully the return of Darren Lehmann will stop this disunity. Whichever player you believe, team spats played out in the media is never a good look.

The players today are Khawaja and debutant Adam Zampa. Odds are even between both sides, possibly because of the inclusion of Usman, who is in red-hot form. Here’s hoping Zampa plays well too.

Prediction
Even with the changes to the Aussie side, I’m backing the Black Caps for a comfortable win.

I reckon you'd lose count of the times when a team parachutes in straight from a home series and they're absolutely pantsed in at least the first game. In that context a great effort to turn it around an begin the acclimatisation so quickly.

Isn't that a huge trait of fans & media whatever their persuasion? A large enough percentage of fans hanker for the highs and get a boost from thinking their team is something "special" (one way or the other) and the media need to put food on the table, so will cater to the lowest common denominator in their lead-ins.

Daws you wouldn't find a sane Australian who doesn't think their home media and fans are one-eyed and brash.

It's like Watson. Watson cops so much stick yet he has an ODI record that would place him as one of our best ever. He is unfairly criticised based on his Test record.

The Marshes have NEVER acted self-entitled. I don't know where you get that from, Caitlin.

Santer = brilliant. Throw him in the mix with Southee, Henry, Boult... There's a line-up right there.

You make a good point about Mitch in particular. He and his brother are so readily attacked and in the past, perhaps, they have deserved it and acted self-entitled. Time is running out for Shaun, but Mitch should be given a look in. He is only 24 after all. That's a baby in test terms. I thought it was a brilliant match and had all the qualities that made ODI cricket great in the 90s for me as a kid, that people tend to overlook because of T20 these days. I just think New Zealand are brilliant and this is our first proper tour there since 'Bingle Bungle' in 2010, we don't handle movement well. That being said, when we move to the proper stuff, the arrival of Adam 'I just can't stop making first class runs Voges', Jack Bird and an actual wicketkeeper, will be brilliant.

And if you went to any Aussie forum prior to this series you'd have found us making bold statements about sweeping the series 3-0 before that game. as for the articles I'll think you that most of the criticism leveled at Australia came from our own media. Andrew Wu and the Sydney morning Herald had quite a bit to say regarding our collapse. http://www.smh.com.au/sport/cricket/australia-v-new-zealand-cricket-odi-australia-crumble-against-rampant-new-zealand-at-eden-park-20160203-gmkxft If your insinuating that the Kiwis fan-base or media are being cocky or arrogant, then i don't really think us Aussies are all that different. besides, there are idiots on every cricinfo forum who will torment the opposition just for a bit of attention As for the match, well I'm still backing NZ, we suck at playing swing or seam. that middle-order collapse is becoming a regularity and smith is being beaten by Henry far to easily

Santner is a hell of a find for NZ, should be given a really long run in the Tests ahead of Mark Craig, who while an honest tryer doesn't have half the talent of Santner. Between Santner, Anderson and Neesham, NZ have some seriously gifted all-rounders.

and Hastings great effort with the bat and 2nd game running going at just 4 an over off his 10. In matches where everyone else is going at 6-6.5 an over has been super critical. Gotta mention too young Santner for NZ - he's come in this season and looks like a seasoned pro over night. Very impressive.

Yes. His job is not to get big scores. Great if he does but his role is X factor. He takes the game away from the opposition in a moment when he comes off...which is more often than not. If he fails, we have Bailey, Mitch Marsh and (the always reliable...teehee) Matty Wade to play their roles.

Seriously, how do people not rate Maxwell. He follows a glorious line of bats that seek to dominate the bowler; a sweetly timed Maxwell cover drive generates power comparable with the best of them. Not only that, he bowls, and his fielding sits happily in the company of the best of the last 25 years. He is a gun, I would far prefer to watch him than Bevan nurdle things around.

I'm not sold on him as a Test player but it's strange how much stick Mitch Marsh, the ODI player, cops from Aussie fans. For a 24yo all-rounder to average 40 with the bat and 32 with the ball in ODIs is an outstanding start to an international career. Compare M. Marsh to Stokes, who has played a similar number of ODIs, and who averages 21 with the bat and 35 with the ball.

Interesting match and fine effort by the Aussies, particularly Marsh and Hastings. Listening to the NZ media and Kiwi fans on Cricinfo/NZHerald/Stuff.co.nz after the first match you'd have thought this series was already decided. As expected this series, and the Tests I'd wager, are going to go down to the wire between two evenly-matched sides. In light of today's result, these NZ articles make for interesting reading: "You can smell the Aussie fear"........"worst team Australia have sent here"...:............. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/black-caps/news/article.cfm?c_id=128&objectid=11584294 "Australia are a laughing stock".................... http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/cricket/76571233/awful-aussies-shot-themselves-in-the-feet-and-somehow-remain-favourites

Well done - nice first effort! But I think you're being charitable to George Bailey. It was a good ball for sure, but it was a terrible shot from Bailey.

I've just started to appreciate your comments Don Freo. I even agree with some of them. Just when the footy season is about to start too, which is a shame. Still, your comments about Fremantle remain a great source of entertainment. Best of luck this year, your club has some champions that wouldn't look out of place with a premiership medal. Best, A Hawthorn Man
