Brisbane Roar vs Newcastle Jets: Brisbane grounded in 2-2 draw

By Joshua Thomas / Roar Guru

Match Review:

The Newcastle Jets have kept the Brisbane Roar grounded after holding them to an engrossing 2-2 draw.

Brisbane went ahead after five minutes with Brandon Borrello earning a penalty for the Roar after drawing a foul in the box from Nick Cowburn. Jamie Maclaren’s initial penalty was saved well to the left by Mark Birighitti but the ball fell kindly to the striker who poked home.

Newcastle responded quickly and emphatically however minutes later after Mitch Cooper headed home after some great work down the left by Enver Alivodic.

The Jets then took the lead on 19 minutes with Corey Brown hand balling in the box for the Roar with Milos Trifunovic stepping up to calmly dispatch the penalty and put Newcastle 2-1 up.

Despite a number of chances and the majority of possession, the Roar had to wait till the 69th minute for an equaliser after a Jade North cross was deflected home by Alivodic.

Brisbane pushed hard for a winner but the Jets held their own to secure a deserved point away from home.

The Roar will be left frustrated who although going top of the table are now only a point ahead of the Wanderers who have a game to play.

Final Score
Brisbane Roar 2

Match Preview:

The Brisbane Roar will be looking to continue their pursuit of top spot and secure a third-straight victory as they host a Newcastle Jets side fresh from an upset win over Melbourne City. Join The Roar from 8pm (AEDT) to follow all the action.

Brisbane have rediscovered their ‘roar’ in recent weeks after a mid-January slump which saw them concede four goals in two consecutive losses. They are now chasing three straight wins after a four-goal victory of their own last week against the Central Coast Mariners and a 3-1 victory the week before against Sydney FC.

The Roar are currently tied for first, behind only on goal difference to the Wanderers, who now have a suspended three-point deduction looming large over their heads.

The return of in-form striker Jamie Maclaren has been a huge factor in Brisbane’s revived form; the Roar managed just one goal in three games without him. Maclaren then returned against Sydney FC scoring twice, the first coming in under eight minutes, to steer his side to victory.

He again found the back of the net last week to sure up a win against the Mariners. With ten goals to his name, enough to be the third-highest scorer this season, it would seem the Roar’s hope of a first-place finish rest on MacLaren’s shoulders.

Unlike Brisbane, who have everything left to play for, the Newcastle Jets travel to Suncorp playing for pride with their finals hopes all but gone.

Despite being eight points out of the top six, the Jets rose to the occasion last week, springing a surprise 2-1 win over third-placed Melbourne City. The win came courtesy of two goals from marquee striker Milos Trifunovic, who, despite being slow to settle, now has eight goals to his name for this season.

Trifunovic’s second goal came off a sublime assist from new Danish recruit Morten Nordstrand, who has some big shoes to fill following the departure of David Carney to Sydney FC.

Both sides will line-up relatively unchanged, with players only coming in rather than out. For Brisbane, this sees Devante Clut and Shannon Brady find their name in the squad while Newcastle welcome Ben Kantarovski and Ryan Kitto back from injury.

Long term injuries keep Jerome Polenz and Jean Carlos Solorzano out for the Roar with Labinot Haliti also still sidelined for the Jets.

Despite going through a season to forget, you can never discount the Jets rising to the occasion as they take on a Brisbane Roar side with everything to lose.

Will the Brisbane Roar’s quest for top spot continue? Or will the Newcastle Jets be able to prove the form guide wrong for the second week in a row? Join us on The Roar from 8pm (AEDT) to follow all the action.

It was surprised and delighted to see the centre back, Jade North, was there to score. Where is Devere? Put Devere in place, then North can play like Beckenbauer. Theo Hingerts; Donachie; North; Devere Lustica ;Corona; Mckay Borrello; Maclaren; Broich

A penalty and a goal from a fullback again this week. It has all been said before and is becoming clearer in my opinion that Brisbane cannot work out how to attack the goal in a way that will result in the goals reflective of the possession they enjoy. It was so clear last night that as the roar midfield diddled around with the ball, the jets used the time effectively to get 7 - 8 men behind the ball. Brisbane would then slowly work their way into attack and either: a) pass the ball out to the flanks (the goal is in the middle of the park boys) and then try and play a high cross or a low square ball into a box with 8 jets players and maybe, and I really mean maybe, 2 - 3 roar players (usually 1) or b) play up to the edge of the 18 yard box and when faced with a wall of defenders, try a miracle flick through the wall of defence while facing away from goal or try a lob over the line which was very easily collected by the keeper or a defender well before any roar player could get onto it. It surprises me that with a striker as a manager, the team isn't being given some alternate options for attack - perhaps trying 'an early ball is a good ball' with midfield moving the ball FORWARD and even god forbid, playing between the gaps (rather than always playing to feet) between the defenders CENTRALLY (rather than out wide) for McLaren and or Borello to run onto and have some space in front of goal to shoot quickly - rather than having to bring the balls in from out wide. Not taking away from the Jets performance, but the Roar I feel really let themselves down by doing the same thing over and over again when it was clear we were not scoring from the slow approach. 'A fool is someone who does the same thing over and over and expects a different result' and last night Brisbane were a team of fools - and if we continue to be foolish we are going to end up in 4th place by the end of the season. We need to add variation to the way we attack and I would like to see that variation be based on speed of ball movement forward as soon as we hit halfway (and opposition is yet to fully organise their retreating players), discarding the need to always find feet, going more directly at players to draw defence and create space and looking more centrally rather than constantly pushing the ball out wide and finally when opportunities present themselves, put a head down and a boot through the ball and shoot. I fear for some time we have been flattering to deceive and while the last 2 games have yielded 4 points,I believe the way we have gone about it will not stand up against the other top flight teams in the league. I hope I am wrong.

Another annoying, and sometimes boring post. You keep repeating the same line every couple of weeks. Others said it was entertaining. We can't all be like the EPL can we?

......drinking what your pouring there Peter, seemed some of the Roars passing was somewhat stale like they weren't communicating much between themselves at times in the first half but I do think it has improved slightly (as opposed to continually passing sideways) but what was with young Brown practising his SUPERMAN pose giving away a penalty, he just need the 'S' on his shirt. But I cant understand why, when your team is a goal down and the pressure is on to equalize that one would attempt a silly fancy looking cross like Petratos tried in the 55th minute (think its called the 'RABANO' cross) .....which failed anyway. Hope J.A. booted his backside for pulling that crap, mind you Lustica was a breath of fresh air when he replaced him later, may be Lustica deserves to start next round. But after all said, Newcastle deserved the draw.....seems that's what they played for and were content with.

Another annoying, and sometimes boring game. Easy to rack up an impressive possession statistic by frequently passing the ball back or sideways. Roar's play appears to be lacking in purpose, unless the intention is to retain possession merely for the sake of possession. On the rare occasions forward passes were played, they came to nought as Jets had plenty of time to funnel back and compress their defence. Together with many other observers, I believe Roar need a big shake out, as there are too many players in their mid-thirties. These players are a trifle lethargic compared with guys 10 years their junior, and I wonder if this rubs off on to the younger players on the field? It is all very well to advocate the advantages of fielding experienced players, but not when they are looking to soon relocate to a retirement village. Unfortunately, no changes are likely before the end of the year, unless JA bites the bullet and introduces some current youth players, but this is unlikely unless some unfortunate results are experienced. By then, it will be too late.

Gee AZ - are you comparing crowd size to stadium size? WSW have had crowds of this size. Not to say I would have liked another 2000 or so.

Again, Roars lost 2 soft goals. If they do not improve, they cannot win a thing in this season.

FIUL - Correct on all counts. Surprised you did not comment on the other outstanding features from this game knowing your comprehension of "stats". Take a look Possession- Roar 64% Jets 36% Shots - Roar 23 Jets 7 Shots on target - Roar 5 Jets 3 (Note this stat well when compared with above) Goals - Roar 2 (penalty rebound and deflection) Jets - (penalty and defensive mix-up allowing free header) With this sort of "stat" emerging week after week is it not surprising that many on these columns are asking why no changes to a side that has lined up similarly for the last 3 games. That is a much more interesting conundrum. Cheers jb

I would have sent the keeper up for the corner 90+3 had gone, worth a shot--everyone in the box for mine.

Fair enough. I didn't see Miller before the corner. But it seemed very unlikely any more time would be added.

Disagree. The camera focused on Scott Miller specifically before that final corner & my interpretation of his instruction was to play it safe. Only a few minutes before, Brisbane nearly scored from a quick counter after Jets "lumping corner into the box" had been easily intercepted. Jets assistant coach went ballistic. There was no way of knowing if ref would play another 30 seconds. He'd gone over the +3 minutes because Birighitti had been wasting time. Well played by Jets: coach, players

But it was literally the last play of the game. If the Roar cleared it would have been full time, if they failed Newcastle had a chance to win. But that shows the lack of experience in this team. Leonardo was screaming for a proper corner. Despite their table position, I think Miller is doing a good job with what he has.

Well done to the Jets for making a game of it. I'm not sure what they were doing at the very end there, they win a corner, seconds to play, surely you take the corner to try and jag a goal on the final play of the day.
