Maguire says Bunnies "not interested" in Cooper Cronk

By News / Wire

Cooper Cronk won’t be a Rabbitoh in 2017, with South Sydney coach Michael Maguire backing halfback Adam Reynolds to remain a one-club player.

Cronk is currently considering a move to Sydney to be closer to partner and Fox Sports TV host Tara Rushton, but Maguire says rumours linking him to the Rabbitohs are completely false.

“No, we’re not interested,” Maguire told News Corp Australia. “We’ve got Adam and that’s it.

“I’m not even sure what Coops is up to. We’ve put a lot of time into Adam and he’s still got a lot of growth in his game. That’s all we’re thinking about.”

Maguire, who was an assistant coach at Melbourne in the early years of Cronk’s career, also said he had no idea where the speculation was coming from.

Instead, he claims he has been in constant dialogue with Reynolds regarding his future, saying he believes the Rabbitohs junior could make his Origin debut in 2016.

“If he performs well he’ll put himself into the window. Laurie knows how good he is. And so do we,” Maguire said.

“I think he’s a long-termer. We’ve already got him for another two years and if the opportunity arises I’d like to see him extend for a long period of time.”

Meanwhile, former Melbourne star and current Rabbitohs fullback Greg Inglis has shut down suggestions he will be on the move to Brisbane before his current contract ends in 2017.

The young kid from Manly that Souths picked up, Riley Travers, he will be a fine halfback for Souths if anything happens with the other blokes! He set up the final try for Eddie Murphey, A nice run to the line and a cutout pass!

The Titans would be good for him, he will be closer to his family as well!

But don't get me wrong, Ken. Benji has had some great games over the years but unfortunately father time catches up to all of us!

Cronk would be well served to go to a club thats in tatters and helping them rebuild if he decides to leave the Storm. They dont need another half but someone like the Titans would be a good fit if any of their halves dont aim up or leave

That was pretty much the same thing I said just before he left Melbourne.

If you had two Kurt Manns you could strengthen three positions...

I have to say that judging on Inglis's game in the Indigenous match where I estimated that he had two runs and handled the ball a couple of times and made limited tackles, that I would not be too upset if he wanted to go to Brisbane. Gee there is a lot of hype around him, I see quite a few games where he is not all that involved.

Did you read the "according to the media part" and "within 3 years" it was regarding how the media likes a little hyperbole and tends to flog the same theme to death with each team.

What are you talking about we don't even have one at the moment, we had to manufacture one in Blake Ferguson.

Well that's what they've both said - that's not always the same thing as what they will do. But I agree, with both of them talking it down it seems his manager is just trying to put the cherry on top of his last Storm deal. It seems that Benji won't be around after this season unless he really shines this year. He's done OK in his time at the Dragons, played quite well last year, but he doesn't set the world on fire like he used to. Nobody did much in the Charity Shield on either side, it was a terribly disjointed game.

Haha, I love it. Footy season is back. We're a rabble! After 1 trial game lost on conversions. So if your team didn't drop the ball a lot you would have won by more, yep but what happens if the Dragons don't drop the ball a lot? Can I get 2 Dugans for an Inglis? Then we won't need Kurt Mann at all!

The Dragons and Souths have already ruled Cronk out of their plans. Yes, the same thing happened on his last contract. "I'm testing the market" Just to get extra retirement cash. If I was the Dragons, I would get rid of Benji also, he is nothing more than a passenger. He did absolutely nothing in the Charity Shield!

Yes, Ken as I said in my comment, "sure not a big win on the scoreboard" SOUTHS had total control of the field position. 75% If it wasn't for Souths spilling 50% of their ball in attacking positions and on the 2nd and 3rd tackle on many occasions then Souths would have put 50 on you! Souths had 9 players out in total, you blokes had 4 out. Inglis is worth 2 Dugans, Reynolds and Widdop cancel each other out. Grevsmuhl and Frizell cancel each other out Thompson and Tyrrell cancel each other out. BUT... SO who do you have who cancels out for Luke Keary, Alex Johnston, Sam Burgess, George Burgess and Thomas Burgess? Cook played all over Rein Walker played all over Benji. Our young forwards Musgrove and Gosiewski played all over Creigh and Packer. FACE THE FACTS mate, your team is a total rabble!

According to the media, the Rabbitohs won't be happy until they have acquired every half in the game. If you wear 6 or 7 and you're not signed on until you're 40, you're coming to Souths apparently.

I suspect he'll stay in Melbourne and I think that's probably best for all involved. Seriously, any team that holds back a young player to instead pay big money to lure a 34 year old halfback is out of their minds. Especially when Cronk has only ever played at one club and always in a spine containing Smith and Slater. I'm not suggesting he's not a great player on his own, the difference for Qld when he was out was quite stark, but he won't necessarily adapt straight away. The early mail was that he was coming to the Dragons to replace old man Marshall - who is of course a couple of years younger than Cronk. I really hope that doesn't eventuate, he should stick it out as a one-club player and be a legend of the Storm.

I'm all for you defending your team, but they didn't exactly 'do a job' on the Dragons. It was 3 tries each, in an early trial game with atrocious handling all round, both teams missing a heap of stars (Dugan, Widdop, Frizell, Thompson, etc on the Dragons side) and rotating squads of 20-something players. Congrats on getting some generous odds though.

This story was always just a "nothing story" All of us at the Rabbitohs on the inside knew it was bogus. Adam is a Rabbitoh, he was never ever going anywhere as I have been shouting at the top of my LUNGS for Months NOW. On several sites. "YOU MEDIA TYPES" know crap about the internal workings at Souths. Madge Maguire is a genius he allowed this media rubbish to fester as he went about with the business of "STEAL-ing the boys up mentally. Wayne Bennett did it in 2014 when he came out and said "Souths are just so Predictable", he had a giant dig at us... So Souths came out and smashed everyone and won the COMP! "A get that up ya" to the NON-Believers Did you guys see how the young kids, "NOBODYS" to you mere mortals do a job on the Dragons, sure not a big win on the scoreboard but a massive win on the inside with 9 Regular TOP 17 players OUT! For people such as myself who have been watching these kids come through the ranks for years now, I just knew they could do it. I had a Grand on Souths at that juicy price of $3.50

Let's open a book on how long it will take people like Weidler, Rothfield and Proszenko to rehash the "Inglis to Brisbane" and "Reynolds asks for release" myths? I give it two weeks.
