WATCH: Mitch Garbutt sent off for decking James Tamou

By Roar TV / Roar Guru

The biff was brought back in the World Club Challenge as James Tamou was laid out by Mitch Garbutt.

The North Queensland Cowboys defeated the Leeds Rhinos 38-4 after a dominant second-half performance, but that doesn’t mean the Poms didn’t have any victories.

In a tussle after the play-the-ball, Mitch Garbutt landed a huge right fist to the Cowboys prop’s chin.

The former Melbourne and Brisbane player was given a straight red.

Dr Alex, I don't recall ever hearing the canvas being blamed for causing the death of any boxers.

The cause of death is the head hitting the concrete, not the punch. A punch does not kill without that contact, end of story.

Watch the replay Mike. Tamou does not take his eyes off Galloway. Garbutt took a free shot.

Yeah, it's the concrete's fault.

What a ridiculous comment, what caused them to fall onto the surfaces that resulted in the injury they sustained.? Without the punch or blow to the body the person wouldnt have received any injury.

Nerval, while I'm generally against too much fighting in sport (including all the ugly niggly slapping rubbish), you'll find that roughly 100% of one punch deaths involve the victim falling onto concrete or similar hard surfaces, not a relatively soft grassy field.

I didn't like this at all and I doubt that Garbutt is feeling too good about it either. The argument was between Tamou and Galloway and was none of Garbutt's business. What he did was potentially very dangerous. "One punch can kill" is more than merely a slogan. It's the truth. In England, during the time of the Kiwi Test series last year, the Sun's Rugby League Correspondent, Gary Carter was king hit by a thug in the street. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-34755963 Carter has only just returned to his home while the bloke responsible has been given - wait for it - a measly 2 year prison sentence. Gary Carter's wife, who has been nursing him back from the brink of catastrophe, tweeted this about Garbutt's punch and its celebration by some rugby league fans:"Disappointing to see punches being thrown! One punch can cause so much damage! There is no excuse!" I'm on her side.

Mike , if it was your young fella in the under 16's and someone did similar would it then be cowardly , considering no one expects punches to be thrown these days .

Not the best thing to do considering the circumstances, but it was probably the best punch since they outlawed it a couple years back. And just in case anyone forgot: James Tamou, game 3 origin, 2015. Remember the dog acts he put on JT and Lillyman? Karma did come back and bite a little didn't it?

Mitch is from Newcastle. NSW. Hes a good bloke and this is out of character for him. How it can be seen as a cheap shot when Tamou looked at him and Mitch had hold of his jumper is beyond me

I agree it wasn't cowardly but it was cheap. Tamou is focussed on Galloway. He sees Garrett but doesn't take much notice of him, then Garrett plants on him. Good shot but it's easy to pull those off when you get a free hit.

Your joking aren't you? Taking on two at once (aka Queenslanders), with the newcomer to the melee throwing the first punch is without doubt a cheap shot. Tamou can't be watching the two of them at the same time.

Well done NRL. Bred a generation of NRL props who have no awareness of their surroundings.

It wasn't cowardly, he faced him & threw a punch, Tamou put his hand out to ward him off, he didn't run away as another Cowboys player ran at him to have a go & when Mitch put his hand up to defend himself the other player thought better of it, I have been waiting for the cowardly slapper to cop one & it finally happened, remember slapping is an assault & not many of the slippers get penalised.

Coward punches are at guys not looking. He was looking straight at him when he threw it. Just poor awareness from Tamou, dont' get into pushing and shoving with expecting a punch to arrive. Keep your guard up

how is it even remotely a cheap shot? He's looking right at him hen the other guy throws. Just a great punch. Shoulld get a good ban though, cant have that stuff in the game

I'm happy for a few cheap shots to be thrown if it means slaps like those thrown by Tamou are taken out of the game.

Got to admit, there was something satisfying about seeing Tamou throw a little slap and then get put on his backside. It was thuggish and I'm glad it's outlawed, but still...
