ICC charges Steve Smith with dissent alongside Josh Hazlewood

By The Roar / Editor

After charging and fining Josh Hazlewood 15 per cent of his match fee last night, the ICC has now also charged Australian captain Steve Smith with dissent for his role in questioning an umpire during Day 4 of the second Test against New Zealand.

The beviour of Hazlewood and Smith was largely condemned after stump microphones picked up their disdain when Kane Williamson survived an LBW shout.

Third umpire Richard Illingworth saw a small hotspot on the bottom of Williamson’s bat and decided it was enough evidence to prove there was an inside edge.

Smith pleaded guilty to the charge of dissent for his on-field exchange with umpire Ranmore Martinesz. Unlike Hazlewood, his exact sanctions are yet to be handed down by the ICC.

Smith says he’ll cop whatever punishment he receives ‘on the chin’ but did feel he was within his rights to query the technology.

The angry DRS moment largely overshadowed a brilliant clean sweep by Australia in the two-Test series with Smith safely guiding the team to a seven-wicket victory in Christchurch to finish 53 not out.

Sorry Rasty; it was 30% mate. Smith's statement regarding the charge and the fine was very good actually; he deserves some credit for that. He has the makings of a fine leader if he can ameliorate the teapot and pout, and show some strong leadership on the paddock.

Agreed, the actual interview shows Smith as saying he has a lot to learn about captaincy and it's on him to set a better example for his team. He came across pretty well actually. But this wouldn't fit into the "ugly Australians" narrative

Which some batsmen do. Or tell him to go back to his mark and bowl.

"So basically a Grand Slam tournament." Not at all Paul. I follow tennis quite a bit, but I don't follow insignificant tournaments like this. The ATP points race is broken down into many levels. To put things into perspective for you, Grand Slam tournaments are worth 2000 points to the winner. The ATP World Tour Finals is worth up to 1500 points for an undefeated champion - my favourite tournament of the year personally since it only involves the best players. ATP World Tour Masters 1000 comprised nine of the biggest tournaments outside the slams and are worth 1000 points to the winner. ATP World Tour 500 series is the third highest tier, which I occasionally watch - most noticeably the Queen's Club Championship. Finally we have the ATP World Tour 250 series - the lowest tier on the tour. I rarely watch this tennis and could name perhaps 6 tournaments around the world in this category. The only tournament I watch at this level is the Sydney International, but only because it's local to me. As the name suggest, these tournaments only offer 250 points for a win. A good starting point, but I doubt The Pri4k is going to get too excited about it.

Umpires are still getting 90% of their decision right and there are ply 2 incorrect challenges allowed per innings. Exactly how are umpires "obsolete"? Except in the case that Id assume this aussie side would still beat us even without needing 20 wickets.

He's talking to the umpire. Clearly, he's asking a question. He's showing dissent to a decision That much is obvious.

Wow, you use these two phrases in the one post "If the precious little female reporter..." and "brings some more modern standards..". Interesting - have you mentioned this to your analyst?

very understandable to want to create a moral high ground after not getting any other positive result from 5 tests.

refreshing? Are you for real? Tedious more like it. Just imagine the uproar had Oz resorted to just negative tactics. Sure to bring the crowds back, not!!

So basically a Grand Slam tournament. I think he had a good run at Marseilles, he easily beat some quality players. He's very much capable of challenging the big boys if he gets his head right, I think that's why he frustrates so many people.

Tag team effort I see - good job guys. I'm talking about tournaments people have actually heard of. I'm sure The Pri4k would agree with me, along with his arrogance.

I disagree, I thought it was rather refreshing. Batsmen are well armoured these days.

Drs has made umpires almost obsolete, the man in white stopped being right a long time ago, unfortunately there will be a lot more sprays in the future from frustrated cricketers looking at the wide screen.

Winning has nothing to do with class. Australia won and NZ showed the class. Remember Mike Tyson? A winner but certainly no class. Roger Federer? A winner with class. I hope you can understand my point better with those two examples. Also did you see the one day series? A comprehensive flogging eh!!!

Your right about one thing Jack. The result will not change it will be scribed in the record books for all time. By the way, I really hope Smith and the team take little notice of the Black caps handling of decisions as it seems to result in comprehensive floggings.

Nah The Black caps would give them a payrise, by virtue they would have some chance of winning...
