Highlights: Bulldogs too good for fading Saints

By News / Wire

It was Nick Riewoldt’s 300-game milestone but the Western Bulldogs did the celebrating at Etihad Stadium, running away with a 57-point win over St Kilda.

The Dogs led by 25 points at halftime and kept the Saints to just two goals in the second half on their way to the 13.15 (93) to 5.6 (36) win.

Lachie Hunter, Tom Liberatore and Jack Macrae led the way at the stoppages for the Bulldogs, while Bob Murphy and Jason Johannisen were influential running off half-back.

Riewoldt made a solid contribution in his big game with 23 possessions and two goals, with Jack Steven, Leigh Montagna and David Armitage among the Saints’ best.

A week after the slick Dogs torched Fremantle for seven first-quarter goals, they piled on the pressure early once again.

St Kilda didn’t go inside the attacking 50 for the first 12 minutes of the match and can consider themselves lucky they weren’t further behind than 17 points at the first break.

The Dogs were wasteful in the first but straightened up in the second as they punished turnovers, with none more spectacular than the brilliant intercept and blazing run by Johannisen that set up a Jake Stringer goal.

Riewoldt kicked the 651st goal of his decorated career in the third quarter but it was one-way traffic in the other direction.

The Bulldogs were their own worst enemy again, however, kicking 2.7.

The door was slightly ajar for the Saints as they trailed by 38 points going into the final term but Stringer slammed it shut with his second goal after another lightning-quick transition from yet another costly turnover.

Love your story captain,we sure do have the best supporters. I used to stand between the races in front of the EJ stand great memories. Your grandparents would have loved this current crop, never has it been so strong. Have you ever seen the club looking stronger than this or the list looking so strong?

Amazing talent just hanging around in the WAFL, my mate who went to the West Perth- Subi game yesterday ( 7k apparently) told me if Adams had played West Perth would have won Adams is Just picking up where at Footscray where he left at West Pert. The drafting is ridiculously Victorian biased, this is from last year. 2015 Draft. Vic 42% (35 main list, 12 rookie) SA 14% (11,5) WA 11.4% (8,5) NSW/ACT 9.8% (6,5) QLD 9.8% (4,7) Tas 3.6% (4,0) NT 2.7% (1,2) Other sports 3.6% (0,4) International 2.7% (0,3)

She was a mad keen dogs supporter. My grandpa would go stand on the wing between the players races at Western Oval (while she stood near the old cowshed at Barkly St) rather than put up with her loud barracking. Had a special hatred for Collingwood supporters, her umbrella was a weapon to be reckoned with. Hardly missed a game for decades, including down to Geelong where we never won back in the 60s and 70s

Once you shop at the Freo Markets and watch John Butler Trio at The Fly By Night club, you lose all trace of Victorian blood.

Don, isn't Freo's best player from Victoria? Zac Dawson came from the Calder Cannons.

Gee I'd love to hear you if they ever bring back State of Origin Don. Dougie. Imagine how they feel watching North play Adelaide? I'm guessing they'd blame 3 time premiership coach Malthouse,he appears to be the only mistake they have ever made. When the Carlton crew were pencilling in 40 goals for Jones last year and I suggested their pencils were getting a little carried away, gee they went berserk. I know the blues have only ever made the one mistake but I'm not sure this losing good players and replacing them with rejects is good policy. They took Tutt also, now the GWS rejects and a couple of others then each year say how cheap they got them. Dare to mention it might be a good idea to ease up on adding list cloggers and low and behold, they go berserk some more. The Bargain Basement Blues. They have Plowman though and today's hot topic is how this Plowman fella tore it up playing a half for Preston.

That was when I just turned off the commentary. Ridiculous comment. As my old granma would have said " if you can't say something good, shut the fu## up and let the action on the field speak for itself

LOL. It must really hurt Carlton supporters to see Waite doing so well and they got zilch for him. What they really need now is a mobile, key forward (and I think they've worked out Liam Jones isn't the answer!)

Agree with all that Dougie. The reserves actually had 50 shots on goal on the weekend but the opposition was poor. I can pretty much guarantee that they are going to stick with Boyd. Bev has said he regrets not sticking with him last year. He's doing ok,the boys only 20. Agree to keep hush on the Don thing as long as you promise not to let the Carlton Crew know I'm petrified our premiership window is going to be slammed shut when this Plowman fella they speak of is up and running,he sounds like a real weapon.

I agree plenty of what Don says is right and I enjoy the banter when I think he's not. But let's not tell him that, ok. Yeah, the depth is good. Next week will be a good test, although it is still only round 3. Good to see the boys doing well in the VFL team but I think they won by over 100 points, which means individual performances don't count for much - it's easy to do well when the opposition is extremely poor. So Dale will have to prove himself further to fight his way into the team. I suspect they're keen to get Campbell into the team though, but it will come down to team balance. For me, Roughead is always an automatic selection, but he can play forward, back or in the Ruck. Tom Boyd has failed to take his chances and might be vulnerable, but he is improving and I suspect they will be keen to back him, because the upside is huge and he needs to be given a good chance to come on.

Don actually gets plenty right but some fail to acknowledge it while taking themselves far to seriously or getting wound up to the point of hilarity. The way some Hawthorn fans long for Dons approval is clearly the benchmark. JJ has been brilliant PD. His challenge this year is to step up to AA status and it appears he is going to. When he pinched that ball in defence, bounced along the wing and drilled Stinger on the lead it sent me into a state of sheer and utter excitement,I was so completely beside myself that the entire family told me to settle down. It's looking like our weaknesses are becoming strengths. The backline is solid with Hamling and Collins in reserve and your mate Roughead has been great in the ruck. Campbell kicked 4 and dominated in the seconds but he to is going to have to wait. Hunter will be elite by seasons end,he's just continuing on from his end to last year. Young Daniel has also stepped up to the point he will be an automatic selection and I expect McLean to do the same as the year progresses. Young Dale kicked 7 in the seconds so he's banging the door down and Murphy is getting better and better with age. This list we have is enormous and these boys are only just getting started. The upside beggers belief. Great to see Libba back to. His ability to find a loose player when he is on the bottom of a pack or in heavy traffic is second to none. He also is going to get a lot better.

I'm finding the constant talk of age of every team frustrating. Old list, young list on and on they go. And the whole average is annoying also. Some teams have 30 yr olds blended with 20yr olds while another might be all around 25 so the average is about the same but the make up completely different. People are even making big deals when the average is only a couple of months different. The commentators completely lost the plot on the weekend when they started saying during the third quarter that the young St.Kilda list was tiring due to their make believe younger status.

The team the Saints fielded would probably have been one of the older teams going around last weekend, at least by mean age. I also find it frustrating, Captain X 2.

Yep I concur Matty. I recall Don rating Adams highly too - well done Don. Geez Johannison has transformed into an exciting player quickly. I hope he keeps this up - with him, Biggs, Wood and Suckling, it provides us with some good rebounding non-key defenders once Bobby and Matty Boyd are gone (although they both look like they could keep going for at least a couple more seasons).

Channel 7 commentary seemingly just can't adapt to the facts or change a predetermined narrative. If t's not calling a very good player a 'superstar' (Bont) after a couple of seasons, but not deserving that moniker just yet, they persist in calling a team the Young Saints repeatedly. Facts: Dogs were younger and less experienced than Saints on Saturday. 17 of 22 WB players with <100 games cf. STK 14. WB av games 82.5 cf STK 95.5. Its pretty simple to press a few buttons and get the facts Ch7.

The dogs have found another gem in Adams. Very disappointing game from the Saints - after two close games last year I expected them to fight this out. They still look very underdone - missing that nab game hurt them badly, with many players only getting the equivalent of one full game of prep.
