The early Origin debate has begun

By Mitch Moore / Roar Rookie

With it nearing the 50-day mark until the rivalry between NSW and Queensland ignites once again, team line ups are becoming a household discussion in both states.

The NSW team line up always involves the most heated discussion due to the eight years Queensland has dominated the Origin arena.

Queensland for the first time since 2006 will have a new coach. Kevin Walters will attempt to carry on what Mal Meninga has accomplished and continue the winning culture Queensland is now accustomed to.

For NSW, Laurie Daley will look to take back the Shield with the NSW Blues at an advantage this year, having two home games at ANZ.

This year Laurie Daley will look to attempt to keep a core group of players in the team but will be forced to blood new young guns for the three matches.

The Queensland team will not change too much, with the retirement of Justin Hodges and the injury to Billy Slater there will be two changes to the backline.

While the forward pack will remain the same, there is a chance for players to push for the bench spot on the team. Here is the Queensland Maroons squad for the 2016 State Of Origin series.

1.Greg Inglis
2.Darius Boyd
3.Will Chambers
4.Dane Nielson
5.Dane Gagai
6.Johnathan Thurston
7.Cooper Cronk
8. Matt Scott
9.Cameron Smith
10.Nate Myles
11.Aiden Guerra
12.Sam Thaiday
13.Corey Parker
14.Michael Morgan
15.Chris McQueen
16.Matt Gillett
17.Josh Papali

Laurie Daley will have some major headaches coming up to selection time. There are a lot of players pushing for spots in the team.

Here is the NSW Blues 2016 squad.

1.James Tedesco
2.James Roberts
3.Josh Dugan
4.Josh Morris
5.Brett Morris
6.Blake Austin
7.Aiden Sezer
8.Aaron Woods
9.Robbie Farah
10.James Tamou
11.Greg Bird
12.Ryan Hoffman
13.Paul Gallen
14.Josh Reynolds
15.David Klemmer
16.Ryan James
17.Josh Jackson

Unless any player is struck with injury, these two teams look like the most competitive ones to face each other come June first.

Where the hell did you get Dane Nielsen from? That's like choosing Nathan friend as nsw hooker, though as a new supporter I would to see him get the jumper. NSW do need new blood and need players that can attack from anywhere, but also need a steadying hand which is why Hodkinson is still there. 1.James Tedesco 2-James Roberts 3-Blake Ferguson 4-Michael Jennings 5-Josh Dugan 6-Austin 7-Trent Hodkinson 8-Andrew Fifita 9-Robbie Farah 10-Aaron woods 11-Wade Graham 12-Josh Jackson 13-Greg Bird 14-Josh Reynolds 15-David Klemmer 16-Aidan Tolman 17-Ryan James Bearing in mind Boyd Cordner is injured, James Tamou and Beau Scott and Ryan Hoffman are slowing down the forward pack has the agility and skills to beat the grey haired QLD veterans, Will Hopoate and Daniel tupou are duds at origin level and Brett Moriss is injured.

1.James Tedesco 2.James Roberts 3.Josh Dugan 4.Josh Morris 5.Brett Morris Unfortunately, B Moz is no chance as he's due back in the last 6 games of season. Shame, because he's very solid and very quick off the mark with surprising ability to break tackles. Roberts normally plays right side and is quick away from the middle defence. Mansour's a good candidate to start sets off own tryline. I think Jennings must be there. He's been in the top few for NSW for about 3 seasons - a very good effort for a centre to win Blue of the series. He's in career best form in attack & defence. I think that leaves J Moz up against Dugan - the former being a "safe" option for defence on Inglis and team stability / the latter in great form with ability to barge out of trouble and break tackles. But can you really leave out the Blue of 2015 for stability & defence? 2. -> Mansour 3. -> Jennings 4. -> Josh Dugan / Josh Morris 5 -> Roberts 6.Blake Austin 7.Aiden Sezer I think Austin's ready, but Sezer's not and the fact they're team partners isn't enough to override this. It's a massive step-up to steer the side in the highest-level contest. But A Reynolds has shown enough over about 4 seasons, including premiership, plus kicking almost equal to best in the game (Thurston & Cronk), which is super valuable. But think he needs to be in top form to give confidence. If not, the safe option is Hodkinson for calm ability to steer, without errors. J Reynolds is about equal with Austin, and hes been there before. 6. -> J Reynolds / Austin 7. -> A Reynolds / Hodkinson (either goal kicking) 8.Aaron Woods 9.Robbie Farah 10.James Tamou 13.Paul Gallen Agree with this. For me, competing players aren't close and racking up huge tackle counts in the NRL doesn't qualify. Impact & enforcement are required, not just aerobic fitness and workhorse constitution. 11.Greg Bird 12.Ryan Hoffman Bird, yes. He always steps up, and is fearless and energetic and has a knack of getting into a rhythm that's just effective in the game. Hoffman, no, as I was unimpressed with him last year, and with the Warriors this year. I think his best days are behind him. Wade Graham was about the most effective edge forward in the NRL last year, about equal with Gillett and Gavin Cooper. Had been building to that for a couple of years. But he hasn't replicated just yet this year - and he needs to. 12. -> Jackson / Wade Graham 14.Josh Reynolds 15.David Klemmer 16.Ryan James 17.Josh Jackson Tricky with Utility. Austin and Reynolds are very similar players. Any advantage subbing one with the other? Any sense planning one as a 20 min swap with Farah to end the game? Don't think J Reynolds is nippy enough for attacking damage at the end, although Austin may well be. But who else? Rein brings much attacking skill around the ruck and could cover in halves at a pinch. Other option is a back-rower who can cover five-eighth & centre, leaving hooker exposed - but I already have Jackson & Graham in the team. Ryan James is a roll of the dice, but he's a massive fit being and all sides have had trouble containing him, so yes. No at this stage: Cartwright (still learning & not solid in defence), JDB (great work ethic, but not enough impact yet, so give him a year). 14.-> Austin / Rein 17.-> Wade Graham / Josh Jackson 1.James Tedesco 2.Josh Mansour 3.Michael Jennings 4.Josh Dugan 5.James Roberts 6.Josh Reynolds 7.Adam Reynolds 8.Aaron Woods 9.Robbie Farah 10.James Tamou 11.Greg Bird 12.Josh Jackson 13.Paul Gallen 14.Blake Austin / Mitch Rein 15.David Klemmer 16.Ryan James (alternative: Merrin) 17.Wade Graham (alternative: Cordner)

Not sure why Daley is crapping on about "big game experience" as a reason for not considering some red hot players. Remind me, what was the name of the NSW player is 2007 who didn't have big game experience who scored on a try debut on the stroke of halftime? 1. Dugan 2. Tedesco 3. Roberts 4. Morris 5. Mansour 6. Austin 7. Seezer 8. Tamou 9. Farrah 10. Woods 11. Frizel 12. Bird 13. Gallen 14. Merrin 15. Klemmer 16. Cartwright 17. Moylan 18. Croker 19. Thompson

You make a good point in excluding Gallen and Farah out of the side. It just looks to me that they have more scoring potential without them.

If NSW are wanting to limit qld's threats the first thing they should look for are the 2 best kickers and well rounded halves they have. Sezer and A Reynolds (if fit) are clear standouts as halves. Maximise field position by having great kickers either side of the ruck. Surely this is a no brainer. Nsw aren't short of ball runners and the outside backs and backrow should be chosen on ball running ability before defence. Gallen and Farrah aren't good leaders or calming influences and have to be dropped. Tamou and woods are the 2 best NSW props and are immediate selections. Tedesco is a no brainer at fullback and he and Moylan should be the only 2 considered at the back. My NSW side 1. Tedesco 2. Dugan 3. Jennings 4. Roberts 5. Mansour 6. A Reynolds 7. Sezer (vc) 8. Tamou 9. Wallace 10. Woods 11. Cordner (c) 12. Hoffman 13. Bird 14. Austin 15. Ryan James 16. Cartwright 17. Regan Cambell Gillard Greg Bird has been playing the house down and has a real point to prove after being written off by everyone including me, he won't let anyone. Ditto Peter Wallace who has been great at hooker. If his form persists his calm demeanour is exactly what NSW need. Every position is covered well in case of injuries with Austin and Cartwright to come on and ensure that there's constant support play around the footy. Qld won't pick Inglis at fullback because the backline is more balanced with him at centre. Qld side 1. Boyd 2. Feldt 3. Chambers 4. Inglis 5. Oats 6. Thurston 7. Cronk 8. Scott 9. Smith 10. Myles 11. Guerra 12. Thaiday 13. Parker 14. Morgan 15. Lowe 16. Gillett 17. Papalii

I love BMoz but it's mad to pick him. He'll have one game back at best. His injury actually provides the perfect excuse/opportunity to blood a new player so why rush him back. Dane Neilson? 2012 called and wants its selections back.
