Highlights: Eels win fourth straight over Manly

By James MacSmith / Roar Guru

Michael Jennings has scored two tries in his 200th NRL game as Parramatta registered a fourth straight win, 22-10 over Manly in Kieran Foran’s return to Brookvale Oval.

It was a deserved win for the Eels, who were denied two controversial tries to Corey Norman and Brad Takairangi either side of halftime in Parramatta captain Foran’s first game against his old club on Thursday.

Under-strength Manly, who lost Matt Parcell and Brenton Lawrence shortly before kickoff in addition to having Daly Cherry-Evans sidelined, matched Parramatta for most of the first hour. But the Eels drew away after that, scoring three tries in the final 10 minutes through Jennings’ double and Semi Radradra before 14,633 fans.

After Brett Stewart blew an early tryscoring chance, Michael Gordon opened the scoring through a 12th minute Eels penalty goal.

Five minutes later Stewart combined brilliantly on the short side with right winger Tom Trbojevic and Jamie Lyon, for the Sea Eagles skipper to score and push the home side out to an 8-2 lead.

In a rough and ready game up front Manly dominated for much of the first 20 minutes and Parramatta enjoyed the ascendancy for the next 20 minutes.

A no try was ruled against Eels pivot Corey Norman for obstruction in the 29th minute, before Dylan Walker spilt a Kieran Foran kick for Brad Takairangi to score. Michael Gordon’s conversion brought the scores to 8-8, after 34 minutes.

Michael Jennings was unable to put the Eels ahead before the break when he dropped the ball with the try line beckoning.

The Eels had another try disallowed in the 48th minute when the bunker backed up the questionable onfield call of no try to Takairangi, due to offside

A Lyon penalty goal put the home side ahead 10-8 in the 56th minute.

Apisai Koroisau failed to clean up an Isaac De Gois kick in the 69th minute and the converted try to Jennings put the Eels ahead 14-10, before his double and Radradra’s effort sealed the win.
Eels forward Tepai Moeroa suffered a first half leg injury and could be sidelined for a few weeks.

Manly winger Jorge Taufua left the field in the 60th minute with a suspected broken collarbone.

Manly forwards got belted lolol...............Manly had you until a series of errors in the final 10 minutes gifted you the win & were actually belting your forwards. Don't get too carried away just yet!!

Good game which the Eels deserved to win. Manly faded badly in the last ten minutes. They really need a settled line up asap. A bit hard for Barrett when injuries are combined with a punishing schedule, so all in all a bloody good effort, showing improvement each week.

Congrats to Parra. The 'continuous pressure method' finally won the contest. All 34 were bruised. The ball must have been greasy. At times the passing and receiving seemed sub standard, even from the acknowledged elite handlers. Amazing how many first grade NRL players are not proficient in the fundamental art of passing a ball both L to R and R to L. Old Injuries? Holding on to it has become a source of much angst to coach and fan alike. 'Brett's Bungles' DCE would have made a difference, but, I reckon this Parra combo will have the wood on Manly for as long as Foran's body can take it.

It was definitely a dumb play Parrafan. But again it stems back to no leading half calling for the ball on the last. He saw Wicks (I think) in the ruck, got no call, and so ran it. I don't really blame him. There was definite confusion all night having 2 new guys in at dummy half in Brown and Leary. For a team trying to find their feet, and with inexperienced halves, losing your 9 and getting 2 guys in there out of position, was always going to make it tough.

Seemed like he was trying to milk the penalty by running into Wicks, then realised the defence was up and he had to go it alone or they would turn it over on the spot.

In all honesty EJ I think Leary lost it for you with that chip chase whilst up by 2 in the last 15 minutes. I thought Sandow and flown back from England and made his way into an Eagles jersey.

The bunker has been black and white with the obstruction rule so not fussed on that call. Went up no try no sufficient evidence to overrule, and was an obstruction in my eyes in any event. Taka one, looked onside from the channel 9 camera angle, went up no try, we didn't have access to the bunkers camera angles on the telecast so again not fussed as I didn't think it was conclusive proof to overrule the decision even if I thought he was onside. The Jennings try. As an Eels fan I am adamant Taka didn't touch it, but there may be a possibility that Taka did knock it on. Again went up as try, we didn't have access to bunkers other angles on the telecast and I don't think their was conclusive evidence to overrule the live decision. Bunker again doing a good job, but people will continue to whinge about it because why else.

I can adamantly say that the internet in PNG is woeful (if it ends up working).

Great game that could have been marred by some incredibly frustrating refereeing decisions and the tendency to go to the bunker at every opportunity.

Great game last night. Both teams were really good but the Eels pulled away in the end. Too much class in that backline. Gutherson played probably his best game for the eels...maybe the return to Brookie got him going. Semi was outstanding, makes breaks out of nothing and great chase pressure got Jennings a try. The purchases the eels have made have all been outstanding this year, Beau Scott back to his best and Gordon and Jennings provide real threats while Foran controls everything really well. They definitely have the team to go all the way.

Yes, I thought the Manly forwards were really good last night. The bench especially really made good metres when they came on. Once DCE returns and their backs click into gear they should go good. Will be difficult to leave out Koroisau from the 17 though so possible bench spot in place of Leary.

I think it was actually Norman who impeded Brown but going by the letter of the law it was the correct decision as no one knows whether Brown tackles Semi or at least slows him down enough if he didn't run behind Norman. The second one I thought Takarangi was onside and the linesman thought he might have knocked it on so asked for the replay. I think this was probably because Takarangi didn't act like he had scored a try because he was actually injured. I think the refs sometimes go by player reaction and I thought he hadn't scored as well going by his reaction. The ref ruled no try on the linemen's judgement, there was no knock-on but they couldn't see whether he was onside so the on-field decision stayed. I think if that call had gone up to the bunker without a call and for them to decide it would have been a try.

Agreed - that was an absolute peach of a kick from Walker

DCE will be a massive inclusion. The forwards are more than holding their own. Something the Manly side hasn't had for a few years. But the direction is missing. Last tackle options are predictable, and disorganisation meant Symonds was left to put in 2 deft kicks. Having said that I was impressed with Walker's kick back to the middle for Stewart who only just failed to touch the ball down. He seems to be growing with confidence, in a team still trying to find their groove.

I think there is a fair bit of improvement in Manly. They seemed to hold Parra's forwards well (and I have been pretty impressed with the Eels forwards this year). They need DCE back pretty quickly though. Two of Parra's tries came straight from absolutely appalling fifth tackle kicks from Leary and Dylan Walker. A bit more organisation would go along way.

Have you got good internet? The NRL digital pass is a great deal. You can watch, and replay, every game.

Yes, this was very bad. As well as Gould insisting the officials make calls on the spot and not use the bunker. I don't think any system would suit Gould. Wasn't he one that was against the "benefit of the doubt", then just let ref make the call, then let the ref make his call which would stand unless.... etc. Of course it will never revert to refs call only, and then replaying the obvous mistakes. Gould would be first to say " how did they miss that?". Importantly, he is talking down rugby league. Also, a bit of banter between him and Rabs is OK. I find both of them likeable and Rabs a good caller (as opposed to unlikeable red-neck and poor caller, Hadley). However they should cut out the in-jokes, and Gould should desist from doubling down on his cute comments when they have already bombed. Ergo his "you are in love with Parramatta".

Good game and Eels deserved to win after some controversial calls (the video ref has convinced me I have to get new glasses as I'm seeing something completely different - Takarangi try and ,no penalty to Jennings when he got smacked in the chops by Symonds - accidental I know, but still, the head was hit first). A worry for Manly must be the defence of Lyon. Got beat a few times and even when running back to chase Danny Wicks he looked slow and wasn't making ground on a prop. He's still the goods in attack, but when you lose a bit of pace it shows up first in defence, as you need to react. Reckon it would be better to move Lyon to 5/8 and Walker to centre. Also, Stewart wasn't very prominent in attack last night which was very unusual for a Brooky game.
