Laremy Tunsil deserves no pity

By Jason Pollock / Roar Guru

The first round of the 2016 NFL draft was one of the wildest and strangest in recent memory.

The Los Angeles Rams had the first overall pick to kick off their return to the City of Angels after leaving for St. Louis in 1994. The Dallas Cowboys broke the unwritten rule of not taking a running back in the first round after they drafted Ohio State’s Ezekiel Elliot with the fourth overall pick, despite having Darren McFadden and Alfred Morris on the roster.

My own New York Giants took fellow Ohio State teammate, cornerback Eli Apple, with the 10th pick, despite just signing former Rams cornerback Janoris Jenkins to a five year, $62.5 million contract.

Confused yet? Join the club.

The craziest incidents, however, revolved around one offensive tackle out of Ole Miss by the name of Laremy Tunsil. Tunsil was considered by many to be a top tier talent, and his slide to being selected by the Miami Dolphins with the 13th overall pick was a shock to say the least.

Despite all the finger pointing and the ‘poor kid’ sympathies, however, there’s only one person to blame for Laremy Tunsil’s actions: himself.

13 minutes before the draft was due to begin, a video appeared on Tunsil’s twitter account, showing him in a gas mask smoking a bong in front of a confederate flag. The image was swiftly removed, and his Twitter account deleted.

Then, while he was giving an interview post-draft, images appeared on his Instagram account that implicated Ole Miss’ staff in paying both Tunsil’s rent and his mother’s water and electric bills. His Instagram account was also deleted.

In the main interviews after the draft, he replied “yeah” in response to whether he had ever taken money from his coach. He was promptly ushered off the podium and briefed behind a closed door.

Admittedly, some events may be out of his control, like his stepfather filing a defamation of character suit against Tunsil days before the draft, or another lawsuit brought by his stepfather after the two got into a physical fight last year and Tunsil was arrested (Tunsil also pressed charges on his stepfather in relation to this incident; both the lawsuits were dropped).

One could even argue that what happened on draft night was not his doing, and they’d be correct in a sense. The timing of the posts prove that he couldn’t have put them up himself, and nobody would be stupid enough to post such self-incriminating evidence on the night of the draft, if at all. Nonetheless, the hacking (which I am not excusing in any way) does not take away from the fact that Tunsil actually did smoke marijuana and take money from his coach.

Media pundits, NFL ‘analysts’ and the Twittersphere can kick up a fuss all they want about how it was ‘so wrong’ that this information was posted, about how it’s ‘such a shame’ that this happened, but all I can think of when I hear that is excuses, entitlement and exception.

All I can think of is Cris Carter at the 2014 NFL rookie symposium, where he told the newest players entering the league to get a ‘fall guy’ that will take the blame for them and even possibly go to prison for them when they make a mistake.

All I can think of is Poppy Harlow, a CNN correspondent, lamenting how awful it was as Steubenville High School students Trent Mays’ and Ma’lik Richmond’s “lives fell apart” after they were convicted for raping a 16-year-old girl.

Somehow, when sports are involved, the hacker is the one at fault, not the person who actually committed the crimes. It’s the person who released the surveillance video who should be criticised, not the running back who knocked out his fiancee and dragged her lifeless body out of the elevator.

Nobody forced Laremy Tunsil to smoke that bong. Nobody forced Laremy Tunsil to take money and various other illegal benefits from Ole Miss coaches, athletic staff and boosters. Instead of getting caught up in how bad the hacker’s actions were, how about people remember what the actual posts were showing us?

Tunsil has to be held accountable for his own actions, and will get no pity from me for doing the wrong thing.

There's no such thing as a "product of society". That's a lazy excuse that gives people the right to act badly and then blame it on the environment they grew up in. Everybody makes their own decisions in this life, and everybody has to be held accountable for their actions.

Yes, I'm sure this was Tunsil's ONLY use of marijuana in his entire life. Are you one of Laremy's agents or..? I'm hard pressed to find a reason as to why you're defending this guy so vigorously.

"If you were going to hire somebody for a job, would you hire them knowing they took drugs on a regular basis?"... What media outlet reported that Tunsil took drugs on a regular basis?! Sounds like a badly conceived assumption here.

If I knew they took drugs prior to employment and the contract stipulated they must remain drug free they would be warned to expect regular drug tests. Fail a test and your contract is torn up sport, keep your nose clean (literally and figuratively) and they'll be gold.

Clearly, if the colleges cared about their students, they would emphasise study and work over training for such ludicrous amounts per week, but obviously they know they're not going to make any money off good grades and employment. They make the money off of the student athletes. This is a problem that the colleges need to address, but there have been multiple instances of now NFL/NBA players etc training, studying AND holding down a job all at the same time, so don't try and act like it's an impossible scenario so it just shouldn't be undertaken at all. I was referring to the entitlement mentality that is bred into athletes - they are given everything they want from a young age, allowed to do anything they want and get away with anything they do, purely because they're playing on a sports team, be it at high school, college or a professional level. If you're the star player on the team, it's exacerbated even more - everyone will go the extra effort to cover up your mistakes and turn a blind eye to your actions. Finally, just as Allanthus said below, what he smokes, injects or snorts is of the GREATEST concern to NFL clubs. If you were going to hire somebody for a job, would you hire them knowing they took drugs on a regular basis?

Yes, I'm really suggesting they go out and get a job.. *gasp*, what a ludicrous idea! Please explain to me the 'mentality of these college football players' then, since you seem to know so much about what that mentality is. No, it's not a ridiculous comment - you and the others on this comment thread are suggesting that because he played college football and was being exploited sooo badly, that he just had to take money from his coaches! Yes, let's all just brush it under the rug because 'everyone' does it apparently. That makes it fine, right?

Are you really suggesting college football players need to go out and get a job? They are training and studying full time and are making there college millions of dollars. You also have no idea the mentality of these college football players and it is flat out wrong for you to even try, As for do you see non scholarship students engage in illegal acts, what a ridiculous comment. Not just college students but many young men make stupid mistakes or muck up. Tunsil isn't the first and won't be the last college student to smoke pot.

I doubt Larry Tunsil needs anyones pity. He just signed a contract that will set him up for life and gets to live in Miami as opposed to Jacksonville or Baltimore.

It's not about punishment. He hasn't been punished for anything. Some franchises elected not to pick him up as is their prerogative. Another franchise picked him up, that's their choice too. If that's for a lesser contract than he might otherwise have got, so be it. He chooses how he spends his spare time, some franchises elect to avoid people who make those choices. The best way to fix all of this is for Bernie Sanders to get up, make the rich sell their houses, hand the money out to poor unfortunates like Tunsil, so he isn't forced to degrade himself in such a manner.

The NFL doesn't care today what he imbides in, but the teams do. Josh Gordon is an example of what can happen. No one whats to invest millions in a player and have it pan out like that

Most college athletes do their courses in the off-season. For footbal players, they will be doing most of their study in the spring and summer semesters, and may take only one course in the spring. Other sports do the same thing, so baseball players will be most of their work in winter. Very few will be doing mutilple courses in-season

Yeah, consequences that far outweigh the act. Would you think it's fair if you got 5 years for going a little over the soeed limit Your biggest mistake is that you confuse general public opinion with the small town of Steubenville. In their case 99% of people believe the boys were totally wrong. It's only in that tiny insular town that they gave support.the support for the draftee is not from a tiny insular source

But he still got drafted in the first round by the Fins so the concern only goes so far. If he breaks their rules now he'll be punished. Hopefully Tunsill just drinks excessively and takes pain killers until he retires and can start smoking doobies again.

bear, what Tunsil smokes, injects or snorts IS of great concern to NFL clubs. He is free to choose to take drugs, just as NFL franchises are free to decide that a player who does so isn't a good investment for them. Which is precisely what a number of franchises have done.
