Bayern Munich win Bundesliga title

By News / Wire

Bayern Munich secured a record fourth consecutive Bundesliga title with a game to spare on Saturday after a 2-1 victory at Ingolstadt helped them put the disappointment of their midweek Champions League semi-final exit behind them.

The Bavarians made sure of their 26th German league crown thanks to two goals from top scorer Robert Lewandowski in the first half to go eight points clear of second-placed Borussia Dortmund, who lost 1-0 at strugglers Eintracht Frankfurt.

Bayern can clinch the double when they take on Dortmund in the German Cup final on May 21 in Berlin.

The final whistle sparked a Bayern party at the 15,000-seater Audi Sportpark, with forward Thomas Mueller grabbing a loud hailer to lead chants with the fans.

In coach Pep Guardiola’s penultimate league game after three seasons in charge, Bayern set the tone with two goals in the first half, with Lewandowski opening the scoring from the penalty spot.

They took their foot off the gas, however, to let Ingolstadt back into the game with a 42nd-minute penalty of their own with the hosts also missing several good chances in the second half.

Borussia Moenchengladbach’s Andre Hahn scored twice in a 2-1 comeback victory over Bayer Leverkusen that all but secured fourth place and a Champions League qualifying round spot.

Gladbach are on 52 in fourth with Mainz 05, Hertha Berlin and Schalke 04 on 49.

Former champions Werder Bremen managed only a goalless draw at Cologne and will now battle it out with Frankfurt on the last matchday to avoid relegation.

Werder are in the relegation playoff spot on 35 with Frankfurt on 36. VfB Stuttgart, Bundesliga champions in 2007, are in 17th on 33 points after their 3-1 loss to Mainz 05.

Boring league. How can anyone argue that the Premier League is not diverse and is boring when Bayern Munich smash the Bundesliga year in year out. It's unfair, loads of money, 10x more than any other team. I don't intend to even bother watching the Bundesliga next season. The only time I'll be watching German teams is in the Champions League or Europa League.

There was a bloke who used to post who called himself ''fussballs AFL spread tracking sheet'', he probably couldn't keep up i imagine, probably needed to employ people !. He probably drifted off into the ether after working out that some sicknesses just can't be cured.

In some ways, I agree with you. However; Rick's Top Tip: No need to give the AFL a free-kick. Don't bother mentioning it on the football forum unless relevant to the conversation. All you'll do is impress Roarers who already hate the code, yet expose it to those not greatly aware of it. You gain nothing if you fear or hate the AFL in this instance. Take the above for example: That's another two mentions of AFL...make it three now!

Actually Brendan it's a very exciting league. The excitement comes from many facets of the league. The race for Champions League spots are highly contested and sought after. The battle to stay in the lucrative league and avoid relegation is equally exciting most seasons. The league is played in some of the biggest and best stadiums in the world. The league boasts an average attendance higher than any other football league in the world save the NFL. Additionally the atmosphere is more intense and highly regarded than any other league in the world. It boasts some of the most respected and intimidating active ends in world football. These massive and deafening active ends are found throughout the league. The football itself is also very exciting. The teams are tactically all very strong and the players are athletic and technically brilliant. The league is probably known more for its attacking strength than defensive. I would highly recommend this league to everyone who is lucky enough to have Foxtel. Turn the sound up on a Saturday night and enjoy the brilliance.
