Dogs' injury crisis continues as they lose another backman

By News / Wire

Western Bulldogs key defender Marcus Adams has undergone surgery for a fractured finger, further depleting the best-performed backline this AFL season.

While the Bulldogs do not expect the 22-year-old to be out of action for long, his absence is a blow ahead of Sunday’s match against Melbourne at the MCG.

Adelaide key forward Josh Jenkins kicked a career-best eight goals last Saturday night against the Bulldogs, while Crows captain Taylor Walker also looked threatening.

Now the Bulldogs will have to contend with star Demons forward Jesse Hogan.

“He’s an imposing young forward, Jesse,” Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge said.

“As you saw with the Crows’ big forwards, we didn’t manage them too well last week.

“Whether it’s Jesse, Taylor Walker or Josh Jenkins, it won’t get any easier.

“So whoever has him at any point in time, they’re going to need help in the air – which we’ve been okay at.

“It will be more a communal effort.”

The Bulldogs’ defence is already without captain Bob Murphy for the rest of the season with a knee reconstruction.

Jason Johannisen, who started the season so well, also is recovering from a serious hamstring injury and Matt Suckling (ankle) is another defender on the sidelines.

Beveridge said they would most likely replace Adams with another young defender, nominating Zaine Cordy, Bailey Williams, Kieran Collins and Joel Hamling as the candidates.

While injuries have been an issue, the `Dogs defence has conceded the least number of points after seven rounds.

They were also able to shut down dangerous Crows small forwards Eddie Betts and Charlie Cameron, which proved crucial in the Bulldogs’ 15-point win.

“I have been really impressed with the way the boys have adapted and tried to stick to a system they know,” Beveridge said.

At the other end of the ground, the Bulldogs coach rejected a suggestion from retired Brownlow Medallist Chris Judd they should chase Collingwood key forward Travis Cloke.

“We’re pretty happy with our key forward stocks … Trav’s not really on our radar,” Beveridge said.

Looks like we are going small Captain,I'm thinking Williams will play which would be another strong sign of our coach's beliefs,he likes to give the young guys a taste while they are really young. I'd like to see us persist with Jong and see if he can lock down a spot. Again, time will tell.

Captain Captain,I wouldn't completely rule out Webb or Honeychurch replacing Adams although I hope not and it wouldn't be my preferred option. I could see Morris taking Hogan,Roberts/Hamling/Cordy/Collins could play on Pedersen and Wood on Watts. Not sure if they have any other talls we need to worry about in their forward line. This wouldn't be my preferred option as I'd like Wood to be a bit freear but it is something that may be discussed at selection. We need to win games like this so hopefully we come ready to play. When we played Melbourne at the MCG last year we were terrible, probably our worst performance of the year.

Wilson, I thought the umpiring accuracy in our game was of a high standard and that the lopsided number of frees to each side was irrelevant. It's a pity Adelaide's hysterical public outbursts directed all the media conversation on that game about the umpires, because the game was a ripper and the conversation should have been about that instead. It was good to see Pyke's belated comments in The Age today that they got it wrong, albeit he didn't issue an apology to the Dogs or the umps. I think the umps will appreciate the support they got from Hayden Kennedy, Beveridge and neutral media experts (Lloyd, Judd, Carey, Watson), who expressed the sentiment that the umps didn't get much wrong. I reckon it will make little difference to the umpiring of Doggies matches. If anything, it will make the umps resentful of Adelaide and that might affect their rub of the green over the remainder of the season. Serves them right for conducting themselves poorly and being unfair on the umps.

Collins didn't play a game last week. Presumably it comes down to Hamling or Zaine. Webb is definitely on the verge of selection, but not as a replacement for Adams. Looked a class above in the vfl game and could move into mids rotation without missing a beat. If Mclean needs a rest or Bailey Dale then you would think Lukas would be obvious choice to come in.

Perhaps Wilson, you would hope not but their is a chance. I wouldn't be surprised about anything that goes on behind closed doors at the AFL. If it wasn't for my unrelenting love of the doggies I'd probably be turned off the game because of its administration. The Doggies do tend to get first hands on the ball which might help or we could get done for more holding the ball. Beveridge was quick to defend the umpires so that might help. Maybe we will see a more across the board approach to umpiring this week. We might see less frees paid in general right through the round. With this umpiring lop sided numbers Wilson you should check out a game of tennis. I went once and the umpire paid 20 double faults against one bloke and zero against the other, zero. That's biased umpiring if I've ever seen it but I'm sure the umpire would say he can only call the ones that are there. ;-)

One other think to get your and PB opioion do you think the complaints about free Kick to the Dogs will cause a problem this week with umpires trying to go the other way?

Your commen,as is generally the case are correct here Wilson. I'd be happy enough to split the next two games under our current circumstances which gives great significance to this weeks match. If the dogs can just keep staying in touch I still think we will explode into the beginning of the destiny that awaits us by time we gett to the pointy end of the season.

I would say the next 2 week will be a real test with a very strong Giants in round 9. But at least you get what is close to a bye in round 10 :) I think once you get those players back and have a smaller list of injures then the last part of the H&A will be good for the Dogs.

Not sure about this undone caper PD. I'm of the belief it's only a matter of time until the doggies really get going. Adams will only miss one game. Stevens and Boyd will be available as soon as next week,Suckling probably the week after and by that time JJ won't be to far away. If we can keep up with the top group of teams we will have a solid list to pick from, the boys will be fresh and we would have got some games into the second year players. Big game this week,Go Doggies.

It's only a matter of time before our backline comes undone. We're now missing four of our best 6 defenders and three of them are jets. But it's a good opportunity for Zaine or Collins, whoever Beveridge deems is most ready.

Hello Wison,I feel the same regarding our defence on the larger ground. We seem to press rather high which might create a lot of space out the back,we will have to watch for this. Also I will be interested to see how our forward entries go without a true CHF which is a position more important at the MCG compared to the Docklands. On the other side of the coin our large number of players who can rotate through the middle could be an advantage. At the end of the day though the ground is only 10 minutes down the road. I still thick the clubs outside of Victoria are at a much greater disadvantage in regards to playing away from home so there can be no excuses in this game. With the experience,Hamling is experienced enough if he needs to come in and I'm happy to back the young guys. Plenty of good young talent down at the kennel.

the only think that would worry me Mattyb is that with the MCG a lot bigger then Ethihad there less experance that they have in the defence are could cause them problems. but at the same time it will be good to see how the dogs do away from the Ethihad Fortress.

Could even be a good thing, chance to get a look at Zaine,Collins or Williams, maybe Webb. Pretty strong depth when you still have numerous players knocking the door down with so many injuries.

According to latest injury reports list that Adams may recover in time for their next game, at worst, he'll miss one game. Not that big of a deal.

The Doggies will cover the loss of Adams. This is a very young football side and their form disguises the fact of just how young they are. I've been on record as saying the depth the club has is remarkable and they are proving that. The players mentioned by Bev could step in very easily. They're are as number of players still in reserve who would be finding themselves playing senior football at other clubs that Beveridge hasn't mentioned also and may come in if we look too go smaller down back and play another onstaller,Webb,Honeychurch and Jong all were dominant at reserve level last week. That means there are still seven players knocking on the door even with all the injuries. On a positive I think Hunter has taken his game to the next level which is what we wanted and second year players McLean and Daniel are showing signs they could be elite. With injury comes opportunity and the doggies are showing that, expect another youngster to show elite qualities before the injured players start returning.
