The Roar's Queensland Maroons team for Origin 1

By The Roar / Editor

Last week we asked you to pick your Queensland team for Game 1 of the State of Origin series.

You came in numbers, as you always do, tallying 300 votes on who should make up the side to take on the Blues.

If you want to read about the Blues team, check out these articles:

But this is about the Maroons, and who you selected to don the jersey for the Cane Toads.

Queensland Maroons team for State of Origin Game 1: Expert reaction

So, without further delay, here’s the 17 Roarers have selected to line up on the day.

1. Darius Boyd
2. Corey Oates
3. Greg Inglis
4. Justin O’Neill
5. Kyle Feldt
6. Johnathan Thurston
7. Cooper Cronk
8. Matt Scott
9. Cameron Smith
10. Josh McGuire
11. Matt Gillett
12. Aidan Guerra
13. Corey Parker

14. Michael Morgan
15. Josh Papalii
16. Sam Thaiday
17. Nate Myles

Interesting. This team is a little bit different to the one that has been reported in the papers around the place. First of all, Kyle Feldt’s shocker over the weekend didn’t deter Roarers, many of whom wouldn’t have seen the game before they voted.

Nate Myles’ patchy club form has earned him a demotion to the bench for the Roarers, where apparently he will start for the Maroons.

The rest of it was all pretty straightforward, with most players earning their positions by the length of the straight. A quick glance at the voting breakdown below will tell you just how far ahead players like Thurston, Cronk and Smith are in their positions.

What do you think Roarers? Which team’s going to win Origin this year?

Whilst Rapana has confirmed he is eligible for Queensland, in an article last week in the Canberra Times, he stated he is aligned with NZ. Pity.

To bad Valentine Holmes got injured I would have had him as definitely a wing spot instead of Gagai

To be honest, its all a little pointless anyway. You could pick any combination of the blokes mentiond and QLD would still win the series. NSW would love to include half of those that the maroons reject.

Guerra has been struggling for form in a team that is struggling , as I was watching titans vs rooster last week ,with 10 mins to go Titans Chris McQueen blew past Guerra like he wasn't even there to score ,even mitchell pearce gave him that look ,Guerra showed no urgency that reminds me of guys like Dave Taylor and Carl Webb and those are the kind of guys you don't need in the origin arena.

Yeah of course. I was just pointing out he ranked pretty well in the people's choice. But indecision on playing him at wing or centre has cost him a spot on the list.

He's eligible to play for Qld and NZ because he's under the old rules when playing for the Titans as a youngster.

He'll be there. Feldt won't.

He played footy as a 10 year old for the Tugun-Coolangatta Seahawks. Merit-wise, Joseph Leilua should have been selected for NSW.

How on earth are people not selecting Jordan Rapana as the first win spot, he's a beast playing well and I think he's suited to Origin.

207 votes for Gagai in the outside backs. Should count for something.

Too old, too slow. And that Smith fella is a grub apparently, so he will be penalised out of the game. 3 -0 NSW

Selecting Queensland seems to be a bit easier than NSW as some positions either completely write themselves (Smith, Thurston, Parker, Inglis) or other positions where there is a complete lack of competition for spots (Myles as second prop, second centre position). The latter point is obviously helped by the suspensions to Hunt, Milford, Napa, Holmes and Munster. Lillyman is the only person you can maybe suggest is a little unlucky (played well in Game 3 last year).

Guerra keeps his spot due to incumbency and loyalty over current form. Myles could've been left out for Lowe or Cooper with Thaiday and Paps coming into the front row off the bench. Napa will most definitely replace Myles next year. Good team. Two in a row!

Well us Roarer's could easily be the selectors for QLD it seems. The only changes I see would be Papalii starting and Guerra coming off the bench.... plus Lillyman may potentially take Myles spot in the 17.
