Roar Forum: What changes should the NSW Blues make for Game 3?

By The Roar / Editor

State of Origin Game 2 has been run and won and unfortunately for the Blues, they were on the wrong end of a 16-26 final score.

That means two series lost in a row for the Blues and ten of the last eleven, not at all favourable numbers.

So what do the Blues do next – should they field the strongest possible team in Game 3 and look to win back some respect?

Or maybe they should look to the longer term and give some young talent a taste of the Origin atmosphere, preparing them for future campaigns?

How should the potential injuries of Adam Reynolds and Greg Bird be covered? How should the players who’ve missed through injury be integrated back into the side?

Should Wade Graham get his debut after missing out because of his ban? And did Tyson Frizell do well enough to stay among the starters?

There’s plenty of questions for the Blues and to answer them, Roarers, we’re turning to you. There’s bound to be a wide range of opinions, and we invite you in this Roar Forum to let us know what yours is in the comments below.

For your reference, here’s the full team from last night:

Agree -mostly. If Dugan is not picked at Fullback (and I don't think he should be) than he shouldn't be picked at all. I could have coped with him coming on as a impact player off the bench but after J Birds performance in Game 2 realise that the bench utility needs to have ball playing skills. J Bird has this in spades and the blues looked dangerous when he was involved. I think we would be better served with Tedesco in that role while Moylan plays at fullback with Jack Bird and Maloney in the halves. Eventually Moylan will become a 5/8 with Teddy at the back. Also- I didn't realise that J Paulo is eligible for NSW!! Man it's hard to understand why he wasn't there for Games 1 & 2 instead of G Bird. I think that BJ Lelui, Cartwight, W Graham, Tedesco and T Trbojevic and Peats are the next 6 to Debut. Although Trbojevic has injury concerns at present... But now I want J Paulo in the team as well which may need to be at the expense of Tamou who really needs to do better in G3 if given the chance. Goodbye to Farrah , Ferguson, Walker, Jennings, J Jackson (not enough in offence) and G Bird for G3. With Cordner to be included and Frizelle just to good in G2 to be omitted there are not enough spots to include W Graham and Cartwright. Gal deserves to play G3 so One of these guys has to cool there heels until 2017.. G3 Team Moylan Mansour BJ Lelui J Bird (Jennings if Bird plays at 7) Trbojevic (if fit) Or Ferguson Maloney A Reynolds (if fit) or J Bird Woods Peats Tamou or J Paulo Frizell Cordner (if fit) or W Graham Gallen Tedesco Klemmer Fiffita Cartwright/ W Graham There you go Lozza- lucky you have us armchair critics to do your job for you....

First one to go has to be Daley, it's been pretty clear he hasn't got a clue - doesn't know how he wants to use / deploy his players and interchanges. I'm not sure he's capable of formulating or adjusting a strategy. Des Hasler should be considered - he brings a philosophy and approach. Toovey I don't rate, but he's a great motivator. Get a coach with runs on the board. You then need a Captain that's going to play 80 mins - and someone the players and referees respect. Why do you think the 50/50 calls? The current Gallen / Farah combo - two pretty selfish players. Moylan's a good choice, but he's not the first choice fullback - so unless you switch him to five-eighth? Fullback Tedesco - head and shoulders above everyone else at the position Wingers Mansour's done enough to be maintained. Sure up the defence inside (Jennings is awful) and he'll be much better. Dugan on the other wing (a big body to take the hit ups back), with an eye on Tom Trobjevic for the future. Centres James Roberts, Jack Bird and Leulia all worth considering. Halves Maloney and Moylan (switch from fullback). Could play Bird at 5/8 and have Moylan as the sub. Props Ryan James (tough, makes a ton of metres and tackles), Aiden Tolman (very similar) Hooker Peats Back row Cordner, Frizell, Josh Jackson Interchange Fifita, Klemmer, Wade Graham - and then whichever of Moylan / Bird misses out.

I think the No: 6 should be Mitchel Moses. Move Maloney to Halfback for game 3. This two players are very good at controlling pressure games. Also they are very good at attacking too. they take on the line.Their vision of reading the game is great puts players on the right time at the right place. Forget about Adam Reynolds did some poor play in game two

Team NSW needs to play in game 3 and subsequently from next year onwards 1. Tedesco 2. Mansour 3. J.Bird 4. Leilua 5. T.Trbojevic 6. Maloney 7. A.Reynolds 8. A.Fifita 9. Peats 10. Gallen (Klemmer starting next year) 11. Frizell 12. Graham 13. Jackson Bench 14. Moylan (needs to shift to 5/8 at Penrith before he gets the Blues #6) 15. Cordner 16. Cartwright (should have been picked from Game 1) 17. Klemmer (put Woods and Tamou on notice, can't have both unfortunately) Daley to resign after this series, would love to see someone like Geoff Toovey or Ivan Cleary take this group forward. If this NSW team can get back to basics of playing attractive football and win Game 3 then we're sending a pretty ominous warning to Dad's army up north, enjoy the spoils of another one sided series win because if NSW get the jump in regeneration over QLD in another 5 years we may well be setting a winning dynasty of our own. Select this team, make it happen NSW. We're counting on you

I agree with most of your picks except for Moylan at fullback, he didn't come up to the plate for mine, he doesn't run the ball up as hard (gets tackled easily) as Tedesco does and hasn't got the size, skill that Tedesco does, Peachy would be a better bet on the wing with Tedesco at fullback. Otherwise I agree with the team that you have picked and it would be a great start for the new generation of a NSW team, even though you left out A. Reynolds who had an alright game for mine until he got injured. I say 'give the new blood a go' NSW hasn't got anything to lose and it can only be an advantage for the future!

For game three I think you might as well give Gallen, Bird and Farah their send off, but then that's it. The changes I would make immediately are Jennings and Tamou out. And Reynolds will be injured. Bring in Bird to the centres, Move Fifita to the starting line up and then add Wade Graham and some young front rower (not too fussed who) to the bench. For halfback, given Reynolds will be back, how about Chad Townsend to combine with Maloney and Bird? Next year, Wade Graham and Cordner come in for Bird and Gallen and Nathan Peats for Farah. This opens a bench spot for Cartwright.
