Collingwood Magpies vs Fremantle Dockers: AFL highlights, live scores, blog

The Collingwood Magpies and the Fremantle Dockers face-off in an intriguing match at the MCG tonight. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:50pm (AEST).

While this match is not overly important in the context of the premiership race, it nevertheless shapes as an even and interesting contest.

While Collingwood have been poor for most of the season, they played two excellent games against Geelong and the Western Bulldogs before the most recent wave of injuries hit their ranks.

However, Rounds 9 and 10 appear to have anomalies, as the Pies went on to suffer bad defeats at the hands of Port Adelaide and Melbourne at the MCG before their Round 13 bye.

However, while their recent form is terrible, they’ll be out to prove a point to themselves and to the rest of the competition.

On the other hand, Fremantle, having started the year with ten straight losses, enter Round 14 on the back of three straight wins.

As such, regardless of the quality of their opposition in the past three weeks, Fremantle will go into this game highly confident of taking the premiership points back west.

In team news, Collingwood have made three changes. James Aish, Travis Cloke and Nathan J. Brown are in, with Jarrod Witts, Ben Crocker and Jack Frost left out of the 22.

In contrast, Fremantle have made just the one change from last week’s victory over Port, with Jack Hannath coming in for Tanner Smith after a week’s omission.

On paper, Collingwood and Fremantle appear to be pretty well matched across the ground. However, although Fremantle have hit a purple patch of form, Collingwood will be absolutely desperate to win after two straight losses at the MCG.

Another loss tonight would see the Magpies slump to 15th, and while they have been pretty bad at times this year, there’s no way that they will let that happen without a fight.

Collingwood’s midfielders will provide greater intensity than Port’s did last week, and they should be able to get the better of the young Dockers brigade.

While Fremantle would love to win, they seem to have less incentive. I expect that the Pies will start the match with a bang in the first quarter and hold on for the victory.

Prediction
Collingwood by 23 points.

See the result differently? The Dockers to have a ‘Pie Night’ of their own? Please let me know! And, of course, don’t forget to join The Roar tonight at 7:50 pm (AEST) for live score updates and debate in our live blog.

"anon said | June 23rd 2016 @ 12:21pm | ! Report Adelaide easily. North are pretenders.✓✓✓✓✓✓✓ Collingwood. Good game to bet on. No reason to even think about tipping Freo, unless you think Barlow will have the game of his life the second week in succession and Pav will kick 5 or 6. ✓✓✓✓✓✓ Richmond (I think I'll be right about these) GWS Geelong Hawthorn" "anon said | June 24th 2016 @ 9:56am | ! Report I have the Pies winning this. Freo lost 11 in a row for a reason. ✓✓✓✓✓✓ The weather is predicted to be raining and 6 degrees at game time. Freo looked out of sorts in that wet match against Richmond. ✓✓✓✓✓✓ I can’t figure out what the new game plan is either. They scored heavily against Essendon and Brisbane, but Brisbane are by far the most awful defence in the league and Essendon are a VFL rabble.✓✓✓✓✓✓ All I say about Freo’s new attacking game plan is where is the evidence? They’re still virtually as horrible as they were last season for inside 50’s (slightly worse in fact). Contested possession virtually the same. Handballs the same. Kicks per game up a little. Clearances way down."✓✓✓✓✓✓ "anon said | June 23rd 2016 @ 12:41pm | ! Report “Very disappointing Josh :). I told you three weeks ago that Freo had turned the corner in the game against St Kilda. And you have still continued to tip against Freo.” Fremantle had the last 9 goals of the game kicked against them in the Saints match. The Saints are an ordinary team. ✓✓✓✓✓✓ Freo beat Essendon at Subiaco and a listless Brisbane team. The Port win was good, but Port were really disappointing. ✓✓✓✓✓✓ For all the talk about Freo’s young players, the reality is that they are merely competent mid-sized players. ✓✓✓✓✓ It’s also clear that Ross Lyon has abandoned the “new” game plan we heard so much about. Lyon is coaching for himself at this point." ✓✓✓✓✓✓ I've got this coach and team figured out.

MRP Round 14 Votes I don't really want to give anyone votes tonight, but here goes! 3: Adam Treloar - Made 7 tackles, and did well to gather 33 touches. Although his disposal was sloppy on a number of occasions, Treloar was the most influential player in this match. 2: Scott Pendlebury - Had 26 touches, and was very clean with the ball in tricky conditions. 1: Brayden Maynard - 22 touches, 12 marks and 6 tackles, he had a strong game in the wet. Walters and Barlow were probably Fremantle's best players.

Collingwood win convincingly tonight in a scrappy contest. They play Carlton next week in what should be an exciting match at the G. Fremantle have a week off, before travelling to the Northern Territory to face the Demons in Round 15.

Attendance for the match recorded at 20,320. Collingwood's smallest crowd at the MCG since 1940, apparently.
