Golden point out! Hasler, Barrett seek review after offside controversy

By James MacSmith / Roar Guru

Rival coaches Des Hasler and Trent Barrett have called for an NRL review of golden point after Canterbury’s controversial extra-time win over Manly.

The Sea Eagles’ season was ended by a 89th minute Josh Reynolds try after a scrappy period of golden point in which both sides missed a plethora of field goals.

Both Hasler and Barrett freely admitted their teams were offside throughout the extra-time period.

“There have been a lot of comments about golden point lately, and that wasn’t going to be won on a field goal. They could have blown a penalty at any time,” Hasler said after his team’s 20-16 victory that keeps them safe inside the top four.

“I think it (golden point) will be reviewed during the off season.”

The NRL have already moved to replace golden point with 10 minutes of extra time during this season’s finals series.

Barrett agreed with Hasler that the current golden point format during the regular season needed to be looked at too.

“I hope they do because it is a lottery in the end,” Barrett said

“We were having potshots and they were having potshots. The referees are not game to blow the whistle and I understand that, they are under a lot of pressure.

“But they do need to have a look at it.”

Manly playmaker Daly Cherry-Evans said he wouldn’t mind if golden point was scrapped.

Draws are the best way. The NRL have golden point extra time so they make more ad revenue.

It's almost as if the referees (and those they answer to) are afraid of rugby league itself doing the talking on the field.

If referees used the rukles in Golden Point, what would be the problem - this is a referring problem and by putting the whisatle away ... it degrades the game ... call it for what it is - pathetic referees and Archer in particular for not telling his charges to apply the rules.

I don't mind the golden point concept as long as the normal rules of the game apply during that period. If someone is offside blow a penalty ! It will only take a couple of losses to penalty goals in golden point period, for teams to stay onside. On the other hand, there is nothing wrong with just having a draw as well. Just as long as the officials don't bastardise the rules I will be happy.

I agree TB. You try to post something positive and there is always someone to shoot it down. I thought running out with the girls was great. How you can put a negative spin on that is beyond me.

It's so rugby league that a negative angle has to be found for even the briefest nicest, positive moments. Even if that did happen, aren't we better of celebrating that the club and the players have learned their lesson? And who cares if it's motivated by PR it still created a memorable moment for the kids involved? Honestly, rugby league fans can be the most miserable, negative bunch of supporters on the planet. Then again, supporters isn't really the right word...

Change it to golden try so the game cannot be decided instantly by a penalty goal. It just needs to be refereed properly...

I'd like to see first to 3 points. Try wins it but a penalty alone won't decide the game I think it would make it very interesting to see how teams approached the game.

I enjoy extra time to get a result. But it appears there are concerns stressed around: a) the drop goal winning the game b) rules not enforced by refs because afraid to have penalty goal effect the result c) teams not rewarded for being tied after 80 mins. So seems pretty easy to resolve: - If teams are drawn at full time, each team awarded 1 point on the NRL ladder, and through extra time they have a chance to get the full two points for the win. Resolves losing team in extra time not getting anything, and still entices teams to play extra time to try and get the full 2 points. - The extra time played 10 minutes (5 minutes each way) - Its not golden point but golden try. Team that scores a try wins regardless of score - So play full 10 minutes and score is the result or first try wins and game is over. That way refs can penalize and enforce all rules without worrying about affecting the ceasing of the game. Teams can still go for drop goals to get a score on the board, but there's more of an incentive to score a try to finish game there and then. Too easy!! :)

Please correct me if I am wrong, or the rules have changed. Last night Jamie Lyon had a penalty shot at goal to win the game in the final seconds. When I was playing, many, many years ago, We were not allowed to even move when someone was taking a shot for goal, yet last night I witnessed David Klemmer run from behind the pack and leap in the air with his arms raised, AFL style. In the day that would of meant a new penalty and another shot at goal. Perhaps it is just one more of those rules that get forgotten during the final moments of close matches. Golden point is great for viewing and that means money, money, money. If you all do not already realise, we have tarted out this wonderful game for a buck, so do not be surprised when it resembles a brothel.

I'd like to see a penalty shoot out using five players from each side decide the result.

Scrap golden point and replace it with either: A. 5 minutes each way extra time. If scores are level after 90 minutes, then it's a draw. B. If scores are level after 80 minutes, it's a draw. Just like it had been from 1908-2002
