NRL: No plans for golden-point overhaul despite pressure

By Steve Zemek / Wire

The NRL says it has no plans to review golden point at the end of the season despite calls from coaches to ban the extra-time period.

Canterbury coach Des Hasler and Manly counterpart Trent Barrett were united in their criticism of the controversial concept following the Bulldogs’ last-gasp win over the Sea Eagles on Thursday night.

And the pair were joined Friday by Wests Tigers mentor Jason Taylor and Cronulla’s Shane Flanagan, who re-ignited the campaign for golden try.

“As a coaching group we decided that if you want to take a field goal in golden point, you can take a field goal,” Flanagan said.

“But the game continues to roll for that 10-minute period and if you score a try, you win. If you want to kick a field goal in the first minute of golden point, good luck to you.

“But the game continues to roll on for that 10 minutes. I think that’s a better model for us.”

The NRL said on Friday that it was unlikely to make any changes to the golden-point period, however it is open to a re-think post-season if there is enough groundswell of support for an overhaul.

“We would review any aspect of the game at the end of the season if there was feedback from all of our stakeholders, including the coaches,” an NRL spokesperson told AAP.

“But golden point remains an important part of the competition.”

Taylor, whose side has lost all three extra-time games under his watch, called for an end to the “whinging” about a facet of the game that was popular with one of the game’s key stakeholders.

“Fans like golden point,” Taylor said.

“We have really good games of footy that are played and everybody’s enthralled by the spectacle, and then all we get is people coming out and whinging about it.

“We need to get over the whinging and get on with it. It is what it is, everybody enjoys it and as a spectator watching those games and not really being concerned about who wins, it’s enjoyable.”

He did admit that extra-time is being officiated differently to the first 80 minutes of the match and that most teams were being coached accordingly.

“If there are no rules, they are the rules. I’ve got no problem with it, we know how it’s going to work, and it’s a frantic 10 minutes of footy that gets everybody excited,” he said.

Both Hasler and Barrett admitted their teams were offside throughout the extra-time period.

“There have been a lot of comments about golden point lately, and that wasn’t going to be won on a field goal. They could have blown a penalty at any time,” Hasler said.

“I think it (golden point) will be reviewed during the off-season.”

The NRL have already moved to replace golden point with 10 minutes of extra time during this season’s finals series.

Agreed wantok...how many times have we seen the refs put the whistle away with blatant offsides in front of the posts. Seems like a different rule book. Even the coaches admitted to offsides. Like Flano's idea but only for the finals. Draw is good enough during season proper.

Golden try is certainly a part of the best tie breaker. If 5 mins each way golden try is deemed to long and cause too much fatigue only have 1 half of 5 mins. First normal time try scorer gets to pick if they kick off or not. Also if a penalty or field goal occurs the game continues but if no tries are scored can give a side the win.

Leave it as is. I love golden point as do most people. If they didn't then why only 21 responses to this article?

"Golden point is fine. The question is why are the rules not policed?" Pretty much this.

That's what I don't get. Wouldn't Golden Point interfere with the lead in to their beloved news?

Problem with that is, what if it's rd 26 and there is a match played between a team that needs 2 points to finish in top 4 and their opponent needs 1 point to make the top 8; it opens up all sorts of shady possibilities. The only fair option is a point each; if you don't win you don't deserve 2 points, and if you don't lose you don't deserve nothing.

I don't understand the problem with draws. If two teams are even after an 80 minute contest, split the points. I don't like golden try because a) if field goals and penalty goals aren't allowed then they are not playng the same game they played the previous 80 minutes, and b) if field goals etc. are still allowed then you will have a farcical situation where a team may kick 2 penalty goals and a field goal, then concede a golden try, thus losing despite outscoring their opponents; so you could lose yet improve your point differential!

agreed. A draw is a draw and there is nothing wrong with a draw. Golden point is simply wrong.

Not just golden point, Eye-Ball. Penalties are very rarely given in close games in the last ten minutes of a game as well.

Agree, Sleiman. The NRLs stakeholders. What a joke. When has the NRL listened to the fans? Thursday night football, evening GFs, Origin starting up to half an hour late, This is how the NRL treats its stakeholders? The NRL doesn't come into it. It is what 9 wants. If Nine decides they don't want golden point because it interferes with their other programming, will golden point stay?

They have to referee it properly but I feel that if you fought out 80 mins & it's a draw you deserve a point, whoever wins the golden point extra try gets 2 points, that is the only fair way to do it.

I thought about that points system before but then you would have some games worth more points than other games unless, as in soccer, you get three points for a win and only one point each for a draw after extra time.

I do like golden point. I would like to see golden try rather than the current field goal senario. Also the losing side get one point, and 2 points for the winner. It seems a fairer outcome for both teams.

The playing field is tilted as soon as there is GP. Firstly there is the toss - team who receives generally has one more set in the first 5 minutes Then there is the potential of conditions - say a Wollongong wind blowing down the field which one team will have the use of before the other who may not get the use of it Then we have the whistle blowers who turn into eunuchs as soon as GP starts ... ....

Golden point is fine. The question is why are the rules not policed? Draws are awful . The feeling by the players and fans at the end of a drawn game is dreadfull. Anything to reduce draws is good. I am afraid though the. Refs are the problem.

its not a perfect solution as people will just continually give away penalties to stop the try and the game will grind to a halt. still tho golden try with no kick for goal and yellow cards for professional repeat offenses might be good.

In golden point the negatives far outweigh the positives. The period is a frantic free for all, when a respectable draw would of been decent enough. The fact that the commission is "unlikely to make any changes" blows the mind of even the most rusted on GP fans. Clearly golden point needs to be cleaned up, or just use 10 minutes of extra time for the regular season as well. And we may come to that conclusion, unless HQ is willing to stop referees from running a muck of blatant 5-metre offsides, makers parallel to the play-the-ball, and swinging arms aplenty, golden point has run it's race. “If there are no rules, they are the rules. Wow. This isn't 1930's Alcatraz is it? Forget about entertainment, it's at the expense of a lot of other things. Player burnout is one of those, and playing overtime for a result that isn't warranted will further bring that problem to a head. Fairness, it's taking away points 'earned' from the likes of the Warriors who went to golden point 3 weeks in a row and 5 times this season. Also, you could even throw in the 'nine news bill' to rid the game of GP and allow Nine News Sunday to seamlessly transition onto our sets. After all, golden point is done; a draw or 10 minutes of time seem tangible 21st century outcomes.

This is exactly why it should be golden try. You could still go for field goal, but the game would continue.......referees would also be more likely to actually adhere to the rules as a penalty goal wouldn't necessarily decide the game. The NRL keeps the excitement factor and the extra time period will seem less contrived.....it would be a win/win for everyone. Its such a simple solution....I cant understand why its taking so long for the penny to drop.

Agreen SA and Max. I'd be happy with Golden Point if: (1) it didn't become an embarrassing field-goal-athon; and (2) the refs officiated the same as in the previous 80 minutes and grew some balls. Neither is going to happen, which is why it's become a bit of a joke. Sometimes it's an exciting joke as Ned noted above, but it's still a joke.
